Normally folk post in this section for opinions. If you were just telling us then lovely. Your baby your choice.

chocatoo · 03/11/2018 18:04

I don't think your child will thank you for it.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 03/11/2018 18:07

I think it's nice that you want the name to be meaningful, but in the nicest possible way you have to realise that throughout the babies life there will be people who find it a bit odd as a name. Unfortunately if you post on an online forum you are going to get people's opinions, even if it's not what you would like to hear. What does your dh think about it?

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 03/11/2018 18:07

Why post on here? It's bloody ridiculous.

Venison · 03/11/2018 18:08

Each to their own. Sounds like this baby is following a traumatic loss, so sad. I hope all goes well. It's not my first choice of name but I have heard stranger...actually know a boy called Straynnger so there you go Grin

SuperstarDJ · 03/11/2018 18:09

😴

UrsulaPandress · 03/11/2018 18:09

What about Jack?

manicinsomniac · 03/11/2018 18:09

I think it's quite a popular name for girls in the US but spelled Saylor? Or maybe Sayler, I'm not sure. I think it's quite pretty.

No idea what a rainbow baby is (dual heritage/mixed race?) but he/she is certainly your baby so, yes, if you're set on one name you should use it regardless.

But people who post on the baby name board aren't usually just announcing their name choice - they usually want opinions or other suggestions.

BackforGood · 03/11/2018 18:10

I suppose I'm being judged by the 'Amelia, Mia and fleur' brigade

eh ??

If people can use Hunter then why not Sailor?

Well, personally, I'd say the same about Hunter.

It's a name similar to Taylor, Mason, Cooper, Parker, Marshall - all occupations.
and all of those ^

Sorry, did I ask? I'm sure I didn't.

wll, you put it in a baby names thread. Why did you do that if you weren't garnering opinions ? Confused

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/11/2018 18:11

Sorry OP I’ve been mean, but I think you’re not really thinking of your baby living his/her life with the name. Would you consider using Sailor as a middle name? If s/he loves it s/he could use it. But I really don’t think they would want to tbh.

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/11/2018 18:11

Sailor Cherry? Poor effort, OP. You have to do better than that to keep a thread going for any length of time.

Whitley83 · 03/11/2018 18:12

If you have nothing to say you don't have to say anything, it's not that hard to be nice

Yeah this baby is following a very traumatic loss, so they are so special to me anyway. Just be nice people, don't be bitter and twisted over something that will never affect you. Unless he or she is prime minister one-day

Chewbecca · 03/11/2018 18:12

So was just post just a public statement, not actually intended to start on conversation?

EthelHallowsBroomstick · 03/11/2018 18:13

I find it attention seeking tbh - both the name and posting about it here only to complain when most people dislike it Hmm

Sandbox · 03/11/2018 18:13

Nobody is bitter or twisted, announce your baby name on your Facebook and turn comments off. why announce it here?!

Venison · 03/11/2018 18:13

Might be worth googling the term "rainbow baby" it's quite well used and meaningful to the person who experienced it.

dotty12345 · 03/11/2018 18:13

Ffs. And my kids are not the Fleur etc type but have proper names. My grandad and dad were miners but I didn’t call any of mine Coal and my mum and gran were cleaners, didn’t call my daughter Bleach. Whilst it may mean something to you that child has to grow up with that name. (And I’m quite partial to a Sailor Jerry)

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 03/11/2018 18:14

Sorry to post again but I've been thinking about it :)

You know I actually like Sailor for a baby and a child up to about age 6. Secondary school will be fairly miserable if you have a quiet shy child as they will have a name that nobody else will have. Fast forward 10 years & I'm trying to think of an adult who introduces themselves to me as Sailor in one of my meetings on Monday.

Sadly you think that tittering about someone's name stops at school, but it doesn't. If we had a Sailor come in to do a presentation or represent a professional organisation then the name would cause judgement & sniggering. It shouldn't be that way but unfortunately it is.

Maybe have it as a middle name & something easier to manage as a first name. You can always call them sailor at home.

Congrats on your pregnancy OP :)

troodiedoo · 03/11/2018 18:15

He'll be fucked if he wants to join the army.

InfantaSybilla · 03/11/2018 18:15

There's quite a few American celebrities with dcs called Sailor. I'm nit a fan but there are much worse names out there

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 03/11/2018 18:16

I think a rainbow baby is one born after a previous miscarriage or stillbirth. I hope this pregnancy goes well for you, but I have to say that Sailor is not a name that appeals to me at all, and I don't much like Amelia, Mia or Fleur either. I especially don't like it for a girl, which is probably very sexist of me. What about Ariel or Mary Rose? Or Grace after Grace Darlling?

MrsTerryPratcett · 03/11/2018 18:17

Douglas - dark water

Lana - still water

Haf - Icelandic for sea.

There are lots of good water/sea names. Sailor isn't one of them.

HenryInTheTunnel · 03/11/2018 18:18

If you don't want opinions, then you shouldn't ask. You knew it would be controversial.

Your child won't thank you for it. A child's name isn't meant to be about you.

I'm sure that there are lots of normal names that reference sailing or the sea, or have roots in sea related mythology?

Whitley83 · 03/11/2018 18:19

Hi and thanks midnight, I have thought about it and I love the name, my child will be at school and leading school with names like - arlo, Hunter, kaydin, princess, forrest etc.
