Me and my hubby are trying for our rainbow baby and I love the name sailor.

OP posts:

I love it. I am going to call mine dinner lady after my DM.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/11/2018 18:21

Where do you live op that your child will be at school with those children. A Disney film?

Sandbox · 03/11/2018 18:22

Or a very rough chavvy area I’d assume

FanSpamTastic · 03/11/2018 18:22

We know a Selah - pronounced Sailor.

It's a pretty name meaning "to praise".

Catpyjama · 03/11/2018 18:23

I dunno I don't hate it. We have a pretty unusual name for the uk, it's a noun in English but a name elsewhere in Europe. And we love it. I think it kind of depends where you live, what your surname is and (whisper it) how cool you are 🤷🏻‍♀️

Heratnumber7 · 03/11/2018 18:24

I work with a Taylor. I don't like it but it's better than Sailor.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 03/11/2018 18:25

Sailor cherry.

🙄

teachergirl2011 · 03/11/2018 18:26

Really really awful. Surely this is a wind up

Creepyexgirlfriend · 03/11/2018 18:34

Sailor is better than Hunter. Grin

Sethis · 03/11/2018 18:36

Posts on an opinion board.

Gets defensive when people give their opinions.

Says "I didn't ask for an opinion".

My suggestion would then be "Don't post in the first place"

And Sailor is a terrible name. Sailor Cherry is even worse.

For the record there are plenty of pop culture and literary references taking the piss out of sailors today. It's not just historical. People growing up with your son will be just as familiar with the reputation of the Navy etc etc as anyone else is. Just ask anyone who's in the navy today how much flak they get.

If you want to honour your antecedents then maybe pick a name with a nautical theme, rather than the rather unimaginative "Sailor, because my family had sailors in it".

Nemo? Nelson? Horatio? There are any number of famous Admirals and Commanders from real life and fiction to draw from. For a girl there are plenty of sea-related names. Just don't call her Plaice.

DeRigueurMortis · 03/11/2018 18:39

Could be worse - the OP could be planning to call the child Morello....

cooblanket · 03/11/2018 18:40

Just reminds me of this song

RebelWitchFace · 03/11/2018 18:48

Only if you use Moon as a middle name.

nordlac · 03/11/2018 18:54

If you didn't want opinions, OP, then why did you post it? I don't really understand what the responses to the thread were supposed to be.

Thismummyruns · 03/11/2018 19:07

This has got to be a joke

plaidlife · 03/11/2018 19:16

It is a reasonably common girls name in the US but I have only seen it spelled Saylor.
I can't say I like it though.

ChilliHobnobs · 03/11/2018 19:20

What if he has a water phobia? And think of the jokes about seaman.

Littlepond · 03/11/2018 19:21

Spell it Sayla

Hoppinggreen · 03/11/2018 19:23

I’m sorry for your loss.
I named my “rainbow” baby a name I liked and DH also liked and that we thought wouldn’t hinder her in life, her “rainbow” status didn’t come into it. To be honest my daughter is lovely and is simply my daughter, she’s not my “rainbow” daughter and I dislike the term, although I know it brings comfort to some people to use it
Personally I think Sailor is a bit of a stripper name but it’s down to personal choice so if you like it go for it. I think it’s bloody awful ( and I have Naval personnel in my family) but if it’s a sea connection you want there are much nicer names

SoyDora · 03/11/2018 19:25

I’m interested as to why you posted if you didn’t want opinions? Did you just want us to know that’s what you’re calling your child, but for no one to reply?

RyelandSheep · 03/11/2018 19:52

Really sorry for your loss op and I can understand you wanting something with a sea-faring theme because of family links.

It’s ok that your little one will be at school with children with less mainstream names but they won’t be at school forever. They will be applying for jobs, careers, they will have friends from different backgrounds and you don’t know what personality your child might have. It’s quite a ‘big’ name to carry and if a child was a quiet, timid little soul, it may be more than a burden than an asset. There will be lots of maritime related names that are easier to go around with. Marina, Athena spring to mind. I’m not keen on Sailor and I’m not of the Mia, Sophie, Oliver school of names only.

snowychristmas · 03/11/2018 19:58

I actually love Sailor, my DS has a little girl called Sailor in his class and I've always thought it was lovely

Dlux · 03/11/2018 20:13

Me and my hubby are trying for our rainbow baby and I love the name sailor.

😐

donquixotedelamancha · 03/11/2018 20:27

Great name OP. If you decide not to go with it, how about:

Pilot.
Butcher.
Baker.
Candlestick-maker.
Bin-man (or bin-woman for a girl).
Taxi-driver.
Geologist
Dinner-lady (Obviously dinner-gentleman for a boy).
Apple-genius
Customer-experience-manager.

GreenDinosaur · 03/11/2018 20:49

To be fair, our generation might think "Hello sailor!" etc but it's unlikely to have those connotations for modern children.
In a class full of Princesses, Hunters, Foxes and Bears, it's not going to stand out much.
