Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

Names I dislike (rationally and irrationally!) include

Evie/Poppy/Ellie/Molly/Polly/Izzy etc
Archie/Alfie/Charlie/Percy etc

I think I just find them dull and overused. And too cutesy.

Aherdofmims · 29/11/2014 22:23

James. Have always hated it.

Also hate some of the names PPs have said - Amelia and Archie in particular

Also Isla.

Have had to read the whole thread just to check my kids' names are not mentioned (they're not)!

My name has come up once.

Dh's name has come up loads of times which doesn't surprise me as it was a pet hate of mine until I met him! He doesn't know that though.

My Dad's name has come up loads of times though which surprises me as I thought it was ordinary if dull.

So many names I also hate have come up - Molly, Charlie, Lily, Ellie all the cutsey names.

But my only really irrational one is James.

Really dislike Caroline, met several and never liked any of them!
Also irrationally dislike Olivia, something so smug about it.
Daniel too, that also makes me think of smugness and buck teeth! I have no idea why?!?

yellowtaxi · 30/11/2014 14:10

The names I hate most are Elizabeth and Eliza. I do however like some of the other derivatives of Elizabeth like Libby and Beth Confused I know that Elizabeth is pretty much universally adored on mn and is often suggested as a name though- it's fascinating how taste in names differs so much between different people. I'll also join in the Alice dislike, along with Jessica (I think it's the 'sic' sound as I like Jess and Jessie), Catherine (but like Katie) and pretty much any old man/lady name.

Snaveanator · 30/11/2014 20:04

Jade. EURGH. It's just, I dunno, the way it comes out. I can say it over and over in my head and hate it more and more.

I'm so sorry to any jades out there

Olive1987 · 01/12/2014 15:48

Never liked jared. My auto correct just tried to change it to hated!! Haha.
Reminds me of jar-head. Hmm

ch1134 · 11/12/2014 23:25

Max - too much to live up to.
Elliot - reminds me of a portacabin (elliot hut).
Molly - too floppy.

TheNewStatesman · 12/12/2014 01:33

Oooh--Sophie. Don't like that one either. "Soapy" "So fay..." Bland, bulgy sort of name. And so inexplicably popular.

Allan is dreadful, esp. when spelled like that (with two lls and a second a)

Do we have any other synaesthetes on here? I don't like H names much either, because they are dull orange and I hate that color.

TheNewStatesman · 12/12/2014 01:35

Martha and Hannah sound chubby and dumpy. Frightful names.

Lyttelma · 12/12/2014 02:01

Jaden / Jayden / Jaiden / Jaydin / any other variation thereof. Bad enough in its original form - no need to make it even worse with uneeq spelling Xmas Grin.

Ryan

Tina, Theresa, Tracey. In fact, most girls' names beginning with T apart from Tess / Tessa.

Surnames as firstnames, especially for girls. Taylor / Tayla is the worst, followed by MacKenzie. I have nothing against these per se, just when used for girls!

And dog names for children - Baxter, Riley, Bailey, Marley, Piper.

And names when you are not sure if the child is male or female apart from Robin as I know nice ones of both genders

Not that's I'm fussy or opinionated Xmas Smile

Luckystar82 · 12/12/2014 11:21

names beginning with K

Kevin, Keith, Kerry, Kelly, Karen etc

I'm with you OP on -belle or -bella names. I irrationally hate Isabella and Annabelle. Just too frilly for me. Objectively, I can see that they are perfectly normal names.

And really trying too hard boys names on girls - Wyatt (Mila Kunis) and Maxwell (Jessica Simpson) in particular. Not sure that's irrational though. I mean, Wyatt?!

windymila · 12/12/2014 12:11

So much Charlotte hate :( (may be my name!)

I really don't like names withden, an ayyyyy in the middle - Jayden, Kayden, Aidan, Hayden. No idea why!

hawkmcqueen · 13/12/2014 10:19

All my DC's names are mentioned here, as well as DHs! Mine is not as it's more unusual. One of my DDs is Charlotte, who knew so many people hate it! I love it and if you knew her she would change your mind ;-)

Anyway the name I HATE is Maddox! A girl I know has a Maddox and I can't say his name, it's just so wrong! Like paddock or trough or something else. It's not a human name in my mind, she might as well of called him Brick.
