Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

Amy, Rebecca and Sarah just boring IMO and can't really explain why

fionadal · 03/11/2014 14:16

Toby! Ugh! (though there's a great Toby in West Wing)

Zoe

Holly

no idea why!

This thread makes for fun reading!

rachel234 · 03/11/2014 15:33

Archie, Alfie, Poppy, Molly, Evie, Livvie and all the other cutesy names that are so trendy these days.

crumpeteer · 03/11/2014 20:34

Ramona, it conjures up a mean bully even though I never met one nice or horrid.

Lucymill · 03/11/2014 20:59

I really dislike Daniel, Josh, Luke, Max, Mia, Molly, Imogen and most of all Olivia. No reason, just annoys me intensely.

Wheresthattoo · 03/11/2014 23:05

I hate all names that are also a word, like Rob, Mark, Pete, Frank (although like Frankie), Heath, Sandy, Neil etc. But I really like Will and I can't explain why!

artex · 03/11/2014 23:07

Ian

aoife24 · 04/11/2014 19:17

Libby and Emily, milksop, lisping, wet.

Rosa · 04/11/2014 19:29

Anything that has been 'invented' to try to be different and just sounds stupid and would probably be better on a dog . Names of cities , places nope doesn't work for me.

Sophronia · 05/11/2014 00:29

I can't stand Adrian (weak and wimpy sounding) or Elliot (arrogant). Not sure why I have those associations.

lebkuchenlover · 05/11/2014 15:56

Seth - sounds so lithpy, like a sound a snake makes.

neverenoughwine · 05/11/2014 19:57

Ellie
Jasmine
Tyler
Kayden
Jayden
Alfie
Kieran
Kiesha

I found it irrationally irritating that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis recently named their baby daughter Wyatt. WYATT!? Why? It isn't pretty, it doesn't mean anything... It's just a sound. It's a bit like calling a baby 'blah.' A beautiful little girl deserves a proper name.

Also all the usual: Lily-May, Mai/Maia/Mae, Ava/Eva, Eve/Evelyn/Evie, Ella/Ellie, Sophie/Sophia. Zzzzzzzzz.

EnglishExpatUSA · 05/11/2014 20:53

Also Brad and Angelina's very random 'Shiloh Nouvel' sounds like a brand of toilet paper.

Wheresthattoo · 05/11/2014 21:29

Shiloh Pitt is a particularly bad name, if you swap the 1st letters around you get Pile O Sh*t!

MayYouNever · 05/11/2014 21:31

Chloe. Sounds like phlegm.

Imogen. Pure, irrational dislike

chrome100 · 06/11/2014 11:54

I feel irrationally sad that my own name has been slagged off on here - why do I even care? Grin

Bowlersarm · 06/11/2014 12:34

chrome - there isn't a name that hasn't been slagged off is there? Think all my family are there, some several times. Most of my friends, and most of their friends!

Trinpy · 06/11/2014 13:13

bubblegum I'm the opposite - like Francis, can't stand Frances. Only reason I can think of for this is that my older brother had a gorgeous mate called Francis when he was at school, I was also friends with a Frances who was nice but ever so slightly irritating.

I can't stand the name John, to the extent that I once dumped a perfectly nice boyfriend because I couldn't stand his name Blush.

MiddletonPink · 06/11/2014 13:57

Chloe sounds like phlegm.

Excuse me?

twinkletoes2015 · 06/11/2014 14:07

Jayden. I've no idea why, I just can't stand it!!

Norfolkandchance1234 · 06/11/2014 14:16

Poppy makes me wince as it was my chosen name for 15 years to give to a
DD till bloody Jamie Oliver called his daughter Poppy now every other kid is called Poppy. grrrr. It was quite an obscure name till Jamie ruined it. But I'm grateful my DD was born after so she now has a beautiful name.

Mutteroo · 06/11/2014 14:18

Maude, Morag, Melanie. Obviously have an irrational dislike of girls names beginning with 'M'!
Stephanie
Samantha
Ariadne
Daphne
Chardonnay
Henrietta

Marcus
Seth
Angus
Timothy
Gregory
John
Kyle
Francis

Also dislike any male/female name that is hyphenated or spelt in a completely weird way to how it should be.

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/11/2014 19:25

I don't think your dislike of Morag is irrational in all honesty, Mutter

CharmQuark · 06/11/2014 19:43

So since this thread contains practically every name that has been asked about on MN, and as every name that is popular or someone loves, can we conclude that all subjective name choices are basically irrational - you either like it or you don't - and it is a complete waste of time basing your choice on what someone else likes.

There are as many people prepared to be horrible about any given name as say they love it.
