Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

Any boy's name beginning with J. Because bizarrely, when I deal with disciplinary issues at school, there are more boys with J names than any other letter. Significantly more. I know it's a coincidence- but still..............

Hakluyt · 13/12/2014 10:25

Wow. I have just checked my file.

In the past 2 school years, I have only been involved with 1 child whose name did not begin with either a J or a C.

Hakluyt · 13/12/2014 10:26

Sorry, that should be boy. There are too few girls to be statistically significant.

Are there more boys names beginning with J or C than any other letter?

vomistheworst · 14/12/2014 08:20

I am a teacher and my colleagues and I have noticed the J name thing for boys, which is a shame because I love mist J names but now associate them with bad behaviour.

I irrationally dislike Ethan and I can't even say why. It just makes me cringe when I hear it. It's really popular, so I know I'm a bit of a freak for this.

Hate - Alicia and Lydia for some reason! Hannah, Claire, Debbie urgh!

merlottime · 19/12/2014 20:52

Esme - I really, really detest this and it seems it is really popular at the moment (just to wind me up)
Sophie ( but I like Sophia)
Darcy
Dwaine/Wayne
Tyler/Taylor
Harrison
mason
Zack
Archie
Arthur (cat food)
Felix. (Cat food again!)

manicinsomniac · 19/12/2014 23:02

I like most names.

But I do have a completely irrational but quite strong hatred for:
Agatha
Gertrude
Ursula
Winifred

Douglas
Nigel
Barry

JulyKit · 19/12/2014 23:14

Beth/Bethan - 'worthy' sounding, reminds me of Clothkits and halitosis
Megan - similarly Clothkitty, also clip-cloppy and eggy sounding
Rosamund - worthy, portly and pompous
Freya - worthy and reminds me of wispy pubic hair
Toby - similar to Rosamund, or a name for an annoying rugby-playing overgrown toddler of a man
Callum - sounds like haemorrhoids - as do those -'belle' names listed by OP.

JulyKit · 19/12/2014 23:15

Verity annoys me too. Twee, goody-goody, sounds like 'ferrety'.

JulyKit · 19/12/2014 23:17

Urgh, and never like Francis, especially when shortened to 'Fran'
Sounds simultaneously eggy and pubic hairy.

Frank's OK.

Frankie for a girl is beyond twee.

Francesca's a good name, though.

LePetitPrince · 19/12/2014 23:18

Freddie, Archie

Most Irish girls names with the exception of just a few.

TheNewStatesman · 20/12/2014 14:40

Oh God, I just remembered one--Nicola.

I don't understand the thought process that leads someone to look at their adorable newborn daughter and think "It has to be... NICOLA!"..... Knickers. Nickel (=cheap nastily jewelry that brings you out in a rash). The way you have to sort to screw your nose and mouth up into a sneery expression in order to say it. Ghastly.

Alyx80 · 20/12/2014 15:42

Nevaeh is just dreadful.

vomistheworst · 20/12/2014 18:32

Julykit, Fran(cis, Bethan and Freya all make me think of wispy pubic hair too. I wonder why?

moomin35 · 30/12/2014 17:59

Alice
Helen

Mae, Elsie, Madison

Mehitabel6 · 30/12/2014 18:06

Some of my favourite names are on this thread!

scrivette · 30/12/2014 18:34

I also dislike J names as they are all naughty.

However, my DS has a J name (clearly forgot I don't like J names after giving birth) and I love his name. Although I have said to DH that the reason he is so naughty is because he is a J name (nothing to do with my parenting of course!)

bouncingbelle · 30/12/2014 18:40

Katie.

Love Kathryn, Katherine, Kath and ADORE Kate but for no good reason at all katie sets my teeth on edge.

But I don't mind Katy as much.

(I told you it was irrational!)

monsterfaery · 30/12/2014 18:43

I really dislike the name Selina, mainly because I knew a girl with this name once and she was the most stuck up, spiteful person I have ever met.

I also really dislike my own name, I often wish I was brave enough to change it.

marshmallowpies · 30/12/2014 18:49

Sadie, because I always found Sadie Frost so irritating, but now I have a friend called Sadie....it's hard to dislike a name when you know someone with it!

The names which were most popular in the 80s still grate on me a bit because they were so ubiquitous - Nicola, Sarah, Hannah, Philippa, Samantha. All names which DH would use for a daughter if he had a choice!
