Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

Seth. It makes me think of sick

redjumper · 29/10/2014 19:19

And Xanthe!

A xanthelasma is a yellow lesion under the eye linked with raised cholesterol. Why would anyone call their child after a skin disease?

Jynxed · 29/10/2014 19:32

I absolutely hate any name used for an English king - you can't get more irrational then that! Henry, Edward, George, William: they all set my teeth on edge. Foreign kings are ok though.

kerstina · 29/10/2014 19:46

Not sure why I enjoyed reading this thread so much !
I am surprised Alice is so unpopular too I wish I had of been called Alice instead of my more dated similar sounding name.
I dislike Pretentious names like Reuben, Tarkquin, Jeremy,Timothy. Also Nigel,Barry ,
Girls wise don't like Liz, Heidi,Susan,Keira,Lisa,Iona, could go on and on !

professornangnang · 29/10/2014 20:17

Isabella, Olivia and Ella all sound pompous to my ears but I know there's nothing wrong with them.

feelingmellow · 29/10/2014 20:34

Hebe is just wrong. Sounds like mad old woman
How is it pronounced?. Heebee or Heeb? - not attractive whichever way.

NorbertDentressangle · 30/10/2014 08:37

Hebe just makes me think of the heebee-geebees.

Pearljam79 · 30/10/2014 10:42

Really hate the 'trendy' (Eden, Nico, Kayden) and 'retro/vintage' names (Ivy, Ada, Albie) they're just going to date so quickly and those poor kids are going to have to live with them for the rest of their lives just because their parents thought they were being cool??
Most of the time it's just to impress their friends and keep up with the Joneses. Utterly pretentious.
Then there's those names that just make you raise your eyes to the heavens (Athena, Persephone, Cuthbert).
I also hate that people are so boring and can't be bothered or simply have no imagination (Sarah, Jane, Johnathon, David). You spend nine months waiting for your baby to arrive and in all that time you can't think of anything decent to name your child?? Or you just go along with everyone else on the estate (Jade, Chelsea, Kai).
Also in the same vein, names that end up looking ridiculous as initials (Violet Ann Jones) and Christian names that grate with surnames (John Thomas) Oh, and those names that clash with your brother's and/or sister's (Chris and Fliss)......think it through people!!

ConkerTime · 30/10/2014 10:53

Oliver.

It is irrational.

I know a quite nice one atm so maybe that will help.

sunflower49 · 30/10/2014 11:09

Cuthbert just makes me think of Cuthbert Cringeworthy!Do people really use that?

I quite like Persephone though!I know a little 'sephi'.

I thought that about Sarah in the 1980s-there were so many of them.

I know a young man whose initials are 'L.E.G' as well :)

Wishfulmakeupping · 30/10/2014 11:37

Joshua is a meh name for me my friend has one and he's lovely but I find it so boring sorry!
There lots of make names that I really dislike yet love the female version of them Iyswim so Frank, George, Philip, Harry yet adore the feminine versions of those names.
Really dislike Florence, Beatrice, Matilda and Daisy just not for me at all. Surprised Alice is getting a bashing think its a lovely name.

Wishfulmakeupping · 30/10/2014 11:39

Male name*

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/10/2014 11:42

Pearl

Out of interest, what names do you like?

sidorek · 31/10/2014 19:11

any D names... Daniel, David, Doreen... makes me cringe!

BubblegumBrigade · 31/10/2014 19:20

Christopher and Christian. They are horrid. I don't know why but they are.

BubblegumBrigade · 31/10/2014 19:23

Francis for a boy is vile. Frances for a girl is ok. I have no explanation for this.

BubblegumBrigade · 31/10/2014 19:28

Philip or Philippa (inc Pip/Pippa).

Just terrible. I don't know why. They're not screamingly class-laden (either end), overused or difficult to spell or pronounce. They should be nice really. They aren't though.

looki · 31/10/2014 20:03

I'm so glad a previous poster said initial 'D' names. I dislike almost all initial 'B' names - Barry, Bob, Beatrice, Ben, Bernadette - esp girls names actually. No reason whatsoever but they make me shudder.

MiddletonPink · 31/10/2014 20:05

I love Francis! And Philippa Smile

BubblegumBrigade · 31/10/2014 20:13

You are quite wrong about that, MiddletonPink. Francis is the worst name in the entire world.

How can you love it? I can just about get my head round someone not minding it, I suppose, but loving it? Makes no sense at all. It's beyond my comprehension.

BubblegumBrigade · 31/10/2014 20:14

I also have an aversion to Abigail. Totally innocuous name but it makes me shudder.

ConkerTime · 31/10/2014 20:18

I love Francis, from the Saint to the short version "Frank" which is a good adjective too.

Christopher (plus Kit) and Nicholas give me the creeps, irrationally.

MeganChips · 31/10/2014 20:19

Both my DCs names have been mentioned more than once!

Girls names ending in elle instead of el. Annabel is perfectly nice, Annabelle - no. It's affected and it's not necessary.

Names ending in ie unless a nickname. Even then actually.

Names spelt differently - why? Eg Lillie instead of Lily. She will spend an entire lifetime correcting people.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 31/10/2014 20:23

Nigel. It's too nasal.

GreenKay · 02/11/2014 12:58

I (irrationally) hate Philip, Daniel, Gemma and Claire.
