Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

"can we conclude that all subjective name choices are basically irrational - you either like it or you don't - and it is a complete waste of time basing your choice on what someone else likes"

AMEN!

lebkuchenlover · 07/11/2014 08:34

I agree. If you dislike a name you simply dislike it! Don't think that is a rational decision.

Wishfulmakeupping · 07/11/2014 08:39

Yy charm!

clairemarie5 · 07/11/2014 21:58

Saskia for me too, it makes me think of someone in a snowsuit. Dunno.

Neil.. just awful to me.

Barry & Gary.. soooo boring.

Anything like Arabella, Scarlett, Ruby. They make me angry!

nicelyneurotic · 07/11/2014 23:21

We've had D and B names, but I irrationally dislike all E names. Especially Eleanor, Ellie, Ella, Emma, Edward, Edmund, Ethan. They make me think of eggs! I cannot think of one I like.

Agree with posters who have said Beatrice, it's horrid, but I don't know why. And I don't like Amelia/Amelie as for some reason I think of worms.

Also dislike Thomas and Tom.

My own name has been mentioned here but I don't mind it at all.

Oh yes, Scarlett.

CharmQuark · 08/11/2014 09:01

I will admit that it is important for me to recognise that all this is so subjective as to be irrational because my frequent reaction to people on baby name threads, including this one, who react vehemently to names are a bit thick.

Clearly they are not thick, but what is the point of saying 'oh I hate that name'? someone else will love it.

Asking for suggestions, to get ideas you might not have thought of, is one thing, but posters saying 'oh I hate that' is nothing more than irrational.

MarthasChin · 08/11/2014 09:15

Claire
Vicky (Don't have a problem Victoria)
Tracy/Tracey
Any names that have been made "cute" eg - Archie, Alfie etc

Hate the name Kaiden, (kayden) with a passion it is over used and chavvy.
Girls I hate ellie, lilly, evie, sienna all stupidly over used girls names theres to many at school that they have to ge known as liily p etc, No kaidens at the are all residing on big council estates in the citySmile

Ham69 · 25/11/2014 23:55

You sound lovely, Regina.

JakeyBurd · 26/11/2014 01:04

I dislike French names, although I'm not sure why. Especially if they start with a CH (Charlotte!). And extra-especially the newer names like Chantelle and Chanice. I think it must be the SH sound because Sinead and Siobhan etc. annoy me too. And don't start me on Shanai...

But my biggest dislike is Caitlin. It irrationally irritates me that it is about the only Irish-spelled name that isn't given its Irish pronunciation, but is sounded out in English phonetics. And that bugs me. Then the "t" is always a glottal stop and the whole thing sounds horrible. Mind you, "kotch-leen" doesn't really sound much better, does it?

itypefast · 26/11/2014 01:41

Mia or Mya
Simply because if someone says that name, I immediately forget how they have pronounced it.

Merlin - can't take it seriously

FishCanFly · 26/11/2014 07:15

Boys names for girls and vice versa. Not unisex names like Alex, but like male Ellie or female Jordan.

chickydoo · 26/11/2014 07:16

Joshua (and Josh) just can't stand it. No reasons. Can't think of a girls name right now but I'm sure there is one.

aftereight · 26/11/2014 10:08

I can't stand the it when parents call their sons by the full versions of certain names, I know it's totally irrational, but it sounds so precious and wet to my ears:
Thomas
Christopher
And the worst - Samuel
CALL HIM SAM LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE DOES!

aftereight · 26/11/2014 10:10

And for girls, again, wet names like
Molly
Maisy
Alice
Sally
