Are there any Aussies here?

Or more specifically, an Australian section here?

I've searched for 'Australia' and there are quite a few threads but mainly about moving to/from. I fear that any threads I start will be lost in the mumsnet sea.

I was on old EB and am now on new EB. Had no idea of all the behind the scenes drama! New EB is boring and agree with the echo chamber sentiment.

Aussie here. From Brisbane. I miss old EB a lot. I’m on new eb but it will never be like old EB.

For those who remember BadCat - she passed away about 18 months ago. It was sudden with no illness leading up to it.

I come to MN for the drama, laughs and feminism. Love the gender critical discussions that are allowed to happen here unlike new eb. That’ll get you banned over there.

It is such a relief to hear Aussies be rational people who support women ie gc.

definitely a cost of living crisis. We are not personally in a crisis but mortgage and adding childcare for dc3 has eaten all of our monthly extra, we have to watch the shopping and takeaways, the same amount buys much less than it used to.

blueled · 25/04/2023 09:01

BadCat's passing was so sudden and unexpected. I still think of her often.

I'm personally not at the point where I'm worried about the roof over my head or being able to feed the family but there are a lot of people out there who are.

Aussie here too!
It was such a beautiful day today. I went for a long walk on the beach. They had some old war planes fly over too.

blueled · 25/04/2023 09:13

@wandawaves my adult son is crazy about planes especially military ones, we have a few here flying over in tandem probably to somewhere much more populous haha

CallItLoneliness · 25/04/2023 09:42

Damn I'm late to the party, but so nice to see so many of us. Kiwi living in Melbs, here. Been here forever...

Starlia · 25/04/2023 09:48

Hi to the Kiwis! Love you guys

blueled · 25/04/2023 09:56

A visit to NZ is def on my bucket list.

Brisland · 25/04/2023 10:05

Resident of Brisbane here, have enjoyed the ANZAC Day holiday, and looking forward to the May Day/Labour Day public holiday next week 😎😉.

Gee it's ok for some!! 😅😁

Brisland · 25/04/2023 10:29

Yes - I think a 4 day week is the go!

blueled · 25/04/2023 10:39

I worked part time for a couple of years when my kids were young. It was sooo easy to get used to having every Wednesday off once they had started school.

Lauraa7 · 25/04/2023 10:48

Melbourne here. Originally from UK,
I’ve been living in Melbourne for almost 15 years.
It was a lovely day today!
Cost of living has increased, however income is higher here so can afford to do more.

AnnHibbons · 25/04/2023 11:22

hi - waves. i’m from Australia - mainly a lurker here, but i love mumsnet. the diversity of discussion allowed here is great. i too am an ex EB refugee. it was a pretty good space back in the day. I was banned for coming out as a gender critical feminist. unceremoniously booted out as it were. it was a blow - EB had been there for me when i was in the depths of despair over secondary infertility, and then in turn once my second arrived it came through with help in those lonely late night feeds, toddler issues etc. it’s such a shame what it has become. every bump is an odd place - i agree with a PP here with the statement around choice of mods being odd. Ange was a well known character - not surprising she never really stood up for the GC feminists - on one level i thought she might, but trans ideology has a religious element to it so maybe it speaks to her on that level.

Goldie2021 · 25/04/2023 11:24

Aussie here! Victorian.

Matchymatchylemonscratchy · 25/04/2023 11:27

Yes, cost of living has gone up. Petrol, Groceries being the most notable. Any kind of construction/renovation work also very expensive and tradespeople can charge whatever they like.

To the pp asking about interest rates , you wouldn’t fix here right now as they are mid to high 5 %. While variable rates are high 4 - low 5%.

blackfred · 25/04/2023 12:10

Aussie here! lived in Sydney all my 66 years.

Neodymium · 25/04/2023 12:20

Aussie here too. From the goldy!

OctopusComplex · 25/04/2023 12:21

Ah, blueled, so did the lawn get mowed? If he did that and made$100, I'd say that was a pretty good day!

@echt - have you always been in Melbourne? I thought you were in Sydney? But maybe that's my shot brain.

Hahaha yes it did get done and he has redeemed his earlier laziness by buying a takeaway dinner and wine 🍷

PonyPals · 25/04/2023 13:47

Another Aussie from Melbourne!

Coffeeandbourbons · 25/04/2023 14:00

Sorry to gate crash as a Brit in the U.K. I just want to say how jealous I am! Scouring for any job which would mean I could move down under but sadly entered the wrong field so it’s very unlikely Sad

SooninBrisbane · 25/04/2023 14:12

I'm off to Brisbane in a couple of weeks, will be moving out there permanently before the end of the year...cannot wait

Eaglesqueak · 25/04/2023 14:12

What do you do Coffee? Would you consider retraining? Easier said than done, I know..
