Are there any Aussies here?

Or more specifically, an Australian section here?

I've searched for 'Australia' and there are quite a few threads but mainly about moving to/from. I fear that any threads I start will be lost in the mumsnet sea.

I must be getting old because the last time I tried some fairy bread the sprinkles hurt my teeth!!

Talulah29 · 30/04/2023 15:50

Hey! I’m from the UK but have just moved to Adelaide 2 months ago 😊

Another Queesnlander here! It's a beautiful day going for the mid 20s.

@ZombieMumEB Apparently there's a bit more to why the motherboard/motherlode site shut down. The threat of doxxing was very real. I heard that their entire list of member names, email and IP addresses were leaked on the dark web along with dozens of other sites.

Fairy bread is disgusting. I've never been able to stand it. I'll tear up my passport right away lmao

PerryMenno · 01/05/2023 00:24

I am loving these Aussie threads and the way they come to life as the rest of MN goes quiet (or crazy lol) late at night.

Fairy bread is divine. I mean yes it's awful, but I'll have a piece every few years and I'm instantly back in a Sydney suburban backyard kid's party, circa 1980, living the dream Grin

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 01/05/2023 01:15

I think the trick to fairy bread is to make it, pack it into a container at room temperature for half a day, and THEN have some. That's the only way you'll replicate it's childhood taste! Needs to be soggier/smoothies..lol.

My DM never made fairy bread, because we always had more culturally traditional food. There was an 'Aussie' boy in my class, (the majority of us were children of immigrants). His DM was on a winning ticket because all she had to do for food sharing activities was make fairy bread and the rest of us flocked to it like seagulls because it was the only time we got some!

Aaah, the memories....

Codlingmoths · 01/05/2023 02:47

I love fairy bread. Always do it for my kids parties! And do lots so I can have leftovers 😊

TupperJen · 01/05/2023 06:26

I never knew until recently that the best way to make fairy bread is to put sprinkles on a plate then push the buttered bread into the plate of sprinkles... so much less mess than trying to sprinkle onto the buttered bread.

That's very concerning. Imagine if you'd signed up using a work email address? 😟

I lurked there when it started but never signed up, it was much too "mean girls" for me. Now I'm very thankful I didn't.

Oh that's a worry. Do you know anymore?

It’s freezing down here in Melbourne today. Watched the coronation on tv last night with a streaming cold huddled over the fire. Made me feel quite British from that point of view, pouring rain as well!

I liked the matching weather too! I watched the Coronation at a friend's house, with lightning flashing over Port Phillip Bay.

And by heck we've had some very cold days and now the rain - always needed - though most dams 80%+ -. As a gardener I welcome it, but at the same time am overcome with lassitude about getting out in the combination of cold and rain. Grin

crabb · 08/05/2023 02:59

I’m in Melbourne visiting my big kids. The weather has been so typical! Blue sky, clouds, rain, repeat frequently. I’m from near Canberra and it only got to 7 degrees on Coronation Day, so it was actually warmer in Melbourne. I’m sitting In Brunetti’s in Myer in the CBD now, typical country yokel day hitting the department stores in the big smoke. I wonder if there will be department stores in the future? Sorry, random ramblings.

EnoughEnoughnow · 08/05/2023 13:08

Mid north coast of NSW. Cold windy day. We lit our first fire of the season tonight! House is an old federation style with lots of draughts and is freezing!

Isoqueen · 09/05/2023 10:22

We had a nice open fire with some of our wood from when a tree came down. I love open fires, hope they never ban them. We’re not that close to neighbours so no worries about smoke etc.

blueled · 10/05/2023 09:54

I'd love an open fire but we are both too lazy to deal with the wood side of things. The electric blanket has made a reappearance instead.

sausage767 · 10/05/2023 10:15

Wood fire is our main source of heating, we have a pretty much unlimited supply of wood. It’s free!

I think that someone on my street is burning pallets. It REEKS.

Not quite the winter ambience I was after haha

That’s awful. We’re on over 100 acres so the smoke isn’t going to bother neighbours. We only burn super seasoned hardwood anyway so minimal smoke.

Codlingmoths · 10/05/2023 14:07

I’ve just bought an electric blanket :) we have a fireplace we have never used- just a brick hole in the wall, no fancy iron inset. I’m very tempted to get a wood burner installed in it.

StartupRepair · 28/05/2023 22:30

Anyone else get woken by the earth tremor last night in Melbourne? It was a big one. However better than the 2021 one which occurred as I was dialling into an online job interview.

Eaglesqueak · 28/05/2023 22:37

Yes, we felt it here. Not as bad as the last one, but still very noticeable!

echt · 28/05/2023 22:44

Yes. I'd fallen asleep on the sofa and just sat up to go bed when I heard the noise. I knew straight away what it was: the fourth since I've lived here, and the 2021 one made the house shake. The dog looked around instantly so I knew I hadn't imagined it.

Then we went to bed.

PerryMenno · 29/05/2023 03:11

It was very different to the 2021 one. Felt more like explosions or big collision - 2 heavy thumps and the window rattled. I did not sleep well!

blueled · 29/05/2023 04:32

I slept through this one as well as the last one (it had been a big night).
