New Year & a New thread - post what you hope to start/finish this week!

I have bought lots of fabby gemstones & I want to try & make some different types of jewellery, different ways of stringing etc.

DH also bought me some rainbow fluorite & I want to make myself a necklace & bracelet, although am still pondering what style I fancy!

(& my bog is sadly neglected, I must try harder!)

I love selvedge. I need to get a subscription (it's on my birthday list, but I think I'll end buying it for myself to be honest!)

meridian · 18/02/2008 12:13

I have gotten two bracelets made this morning, and now am off to get lunch made for me at Frizbe's house.

two new bracelets quite pleased with them. and have a necklace to be made and need to order soem earring findings.. then figure out how to actually make the earrings

nbg- easter swap parcel will be popped in the post a little later today.

Nbg · 18/02/2008 12:28

Its good to see some magazine recommendations.
I was looking at loads the other day and was so baffled I never bought any.

Meri, I love the 2 colour bracelet and at the swap tease. I'm posting yours tomorrow.
Also thanks for the corn chowder recipe on the blog. Thats got dinner sorted for tonight.

I ordered more bits yesterday. I got some Moda fabric and more beads (I swear bead buying is lethal and addictive).
I also got an email from Ikea to say that everyone in the uk can shop online now. I went on all excited thinking I could get some fabric and was shocked to find that there really isnt much you can buy online apart from furniture.
Whats that point of showing it online if you cant buy it!

has anyone else seem julie at little cotton rabbits post today?, she's mentioned about registering as self employed if you are selling stuff you have made, so i've done a bit of research this morning.

in case anyone hasn't done this yet, this is the form you need to fill in or you can ring and do it over the phone. i've just spoken to them and will be registering myself once my etsy shop is open, as i'm counting that as the day i started from.

Nbg · 18/02/2008 13:46

Thats useful LK.
Is this to cover yourself for tax purposes and benefits etc?

lucykate · 18/02/2008 14:19

yes, it doesn't mean that you have to pay anything any tax or ni, that totally depends on earnings, if your earnings are less than about 5k a year, you simply declare yourself as exempt from both.

it just means your are notifying the inland revenue of your self employed status and registering your business. it is fairly simple for me as i am essentially a sahm atm, i'm not sure how it affects any of us who are also employed, best thing to do would be to ring the number on that form and ask

lucykate · 18/02/2008 14:21

sorry about typo's in last post, ds was on my knee, typing one handed!

Nbg · 18/02/2008 14:21

Well I certainly dont think I'll be earning more than £5k a year

I'll probably do it like you LK and wait till I do an Etsy shop.

I think it gets a bit more complicated if you are employes elsewhere, as your wages + your craft earnings are lumped together - you can't separate the two. That's what has put me off going 'legit'. It woldn't be so bad if you could just register the craft side & keep the 'day' job as a separate (already taxed) entity. But I believe that you'd have to fill in an assessment form at the end of the year to cover both (unless someone can tell me different)

i'll check with dh as to how he does his, he self assesses all his self employed earnings, but also has a salary from his lecturing post, i did think the two were done separately, but his tax code is applied to his employed earnings, meaning he pays tax on all his self employed earnings, but minus any tax deductible expenses.

meridian · 18/02/2008 19:55

lk- will have to have a better look at that info when I feel better and can think straight ((have a headache and bit of a cold))

have uploaded 3 mini paintings to etsy shop like i have been threatening to do...

ladies some advice needed please

my old boss has offered to deisplay and sell my jewellery and tiara's in the salon but i dont know where i stand as i dont want to be self employed and i cant see how she can do it as a business without me being regisrted ????

i know obviously she will take a cut etc. but does any one have any ideas otherwise ????

im annoyed two people have seen what im doing recently then knicked half my customer base by doing mediocre versions themselves even if do say so myself

i was so worried about doiing lariats as the only ones i have ever seen where whizz'z i asked her permission before i made one [dressedup bows at whizz'z superior jewellerymaking talent]

otherwise im trying to get nbg's daughters cardi knitted her baby bag knitted and doing a load of tiaras and a load of sterling silver jewellery for website

am a bit stuck as i have moved out and half my craft stuff is at my old hjose and the rest at my mums with me

Nbg · 19/02/2008 09:37

You dont have to be registered I dont think DUNTG. You'll have to agree some sort of deal with her as to how much cut she will take.
Or why not suggest she gives you a trial first to see how it goes.
Say give it a month and see how much sells and then agree on a percentage she could take?

LK, I love the kit. Thats brilliant. I bet your really chuffed. Did you know they were doing it?

Well I received my swap today
Thank you very much Meridian. Its all beautiful.
I'm going to put it on my blog later.

I've made a start on the hearts for my friends dd. Just need to sew them on to the ribbon, then stitch and stuff them.
I've also received more fabric and beads so I might be able to squeeze in a play later

Nbg · 19/02/2008 10:00

I have a request.

Can someone make me 2 personalised notebooks, 2 mothers day cards and a birthday card please?

Dingle · 19/02/2008 10:18

If any of my stuff fits the bill Nbg, I would be happy to make some for you...might even help me find my lost mojo...

off to look at this kit!!

Nbg · 19/02/2008 10:28

Thanks Dingle.
I've just had a look at your blog.
I like the card thats on dated 30th oct last year.
If i could have 2 of them as mothers day cards please.

Have you got any notebooksi could see?

Dingle · 19/02/2008 10:41

I might need to do a slight variation for the cards if that's OK? I think I only have one green flower left in that size, might need to either do a different colour of play with some different size combinations.

For the notebook, the only ones I have on my blog are around 21,22 & 23 Jan 08. But I do have some A5 spiralbound notebooks here, just waiting to be altered!!

Nbg · 19/02/2008 10:43

Thats fine for the cards. I just like the design.
I love the stiched one that you've just done too.

Will look at the notebooks.

Nbg · 19/02/2008 10:48

Oh yeah I like the "my notes my dreams my wishes" one.

Can I have 2 of them please but personalised for mothers day?

I also need a pressie for MIL as her birthday is the day after mothers day.

Gingermonkey · 19/02/2008 13:59
