refuge.org.uk/2012/06/13/knit-for-refuge-campaign-gets-underway/

A few of us fancy doing a few squares for this, so here's a thread!

As blankets need to be 4x6 squares (24 total), the idea is that we arrange ourselves into small groups by geography and do a few each, then meet to put them together and eat cake

I'll link the previous Location thread shortly so folk can add themselves and get organising Thanks

But it uses the K word

BarbaraWoodlouseGoesForGold · 13/09/2012 12:51

Krochet? Wink

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/09/2012 12:56

I would like to contribute please, but I think I'm on my own location wise Smile. I'll happily make some squares and post them on and eat cake on my own if anyone wants to buddy up with me.

Just a thought, and this is based on my complete lack of knowledge - are there any left over squares from previous Woolly Hugs projects that could be put towards a refuge blanket?

tinierclanger · 13/09/2012 12:58

I would like to knit, but am probably too shy to meet up. Blush
Can I be another knit-and-poster?

SoupDragon · 13/09/2012 13:20

LOL - clearly the Clangers aren't brave... I'm too shy for meet ups too :o

PurplePidjin · 13/09/2012 14:43

Shredded, we try very hard not to have spares! Any leftovers are used to raise money - one went for Anthony Nolan, another will be auctioned for SANDS next week :)

We need a volunteer to put together a posted one, if folk are going to be wussy Wink

Thank you for the info pidj, I'm glad they all get put to good use Smile.

tribpot · 13/09/2012 18:34

I'm happy to put together a posted one as I have someone at home most days for any parcels that won't fit through the letter box.

However, I might impose some draconian restrictions such as garter stitch edges - do people think that is outrageous?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/09/2012 18:45

Not outrageous at all trib (do you mean a few rows at the top and bottom and a few stitches either side to make a border?).

tribpot · 13/09/2012 18:48

That's it, Shredded. I'm just thinking of a few simple tricks that might make the squares look more like each other or easier to put together. As these are only 4x6s they'll need a bit of unity, I think - and as we're doing several, they don't all have to be alike.

Somersaults · 13/09/2012 19:12

I'm in!

I'd like to crochet as well as knit though but that will probably cause problems if they need a garter stitch edging. If I knew how to join I might be tempted to volunteer myself as a joiner for a crocheted version to go along with a knitted if that's what trib is doing but I honestly don't know where to start!

DutchOma · 13/09/2012 19:43

If I have squares I can join.

tribpot · 13/09/2012 20:15

I thought this might be a reasonable one to separate into a crochet blanket and a knitted one or two, Somersaults.

PurplePidjin · 13/09/2012 23:14

For this, i suggest we go for cheapie acrylic - quantity is better and it'll be easy to wash (I'm thinking b+b type accommodation and laundrettes at least while families find their feet)

Knitters: stocking stitch squares with a 5 row/stitch border. Feel free to be creative in the middle.

Crocheters: Grannies with a final row of solid dc. I'm happy to talk people through if they need it :) Again, creativity in the middle is fab.

How about knitters send to Trib, crocheters send to Oma and they can send on to others if they're swamped? Is that ok? Addresses on request via pm.

Colour scheme... Shall we stick to yellows and whites so they can be for either sex, or go for clear Pinks and Blues?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 14/09/2012 00:03

Sounds good - I will need to source and buy wool on line, so can anyone suggest a brand please?

tribpot · 14/09/2012 07:28

Shall we go for a brand that's readily accessible? I'm doing something with Sirdar Snuggly DK at the moment but the Recycled DK is nice, or the King Cole gives us a shedload of colours to work from. Paton's Smoothie is nice too.

As there will be a number of smaller blankets, I think we can choose a colour scheme/yarn that works per blanket - Shredded, what would you like to do? I quite fancy the Paton's Smoothie in Lime and Cream? Or the Recycled in Seashells maybe?

PurplePidjin · 14/09/2012 07:43

Anything 100% acrylic in double knit, i reckon - good suggestions from Trib. I'm hoping to stash bust a big Blush

The Stylefcraft DK is dirt cheap and nice (provided you're not using it in a high humidity area!)

SoupDragon · 14/09/2012 08:08

I've ordered from here before.

And I'm not just suggesting this because I have a load in a drawer...

SoupDragon · 14/09/2012 08:09

I've had issues with the Smoothie coming up stiff, although a short tumble dry sorted this out. I think I have some of this in cream and possibly the bright yellow and sage green.

PurplePidjin · 14/09/2012 08:18

My local Pound Stretcher does some nice cheap wool...

I think quantity over quality on this one (although I've got acrylic stuff for PidjChick that relatives knitted for me!)

OP posts:
tribpot · 14/09/2012 08:20

The Stylecraft gives us lots of options, Soupy - and widely accessible too. Are you wanting to join in the knitted blanket with Shredded and me? 3 or 4 to a blanket sounds like it could make it quite straight forward.

SoupDragon · 14/09/2012 08:22

I
Don't
Knit

How could you suggest such a ting? Shock Wink :o

I coud probably put together a crocheted one or two for the unsociable gits shy ones :o
