A few of us fancy doing a few squares for this, so here's a thread!

As blankets need to be 4x6 squares (24 total), the idea is that we arrange ourselves into small groups by geography and do a few each, then meet to put them together and eat cake

I'll link the previous Location thread shortly so folk can add themselves and get organising Thanks

Team Hooker, please excuse newbie failings and brain fail, I have hook and yarn, woolcraft acrylic baby care dk in pink, not sure I can change colour in the square though so would be block colour.

I'm not 100% sure how to make the squares but am going to start the first one now, I'm struggling a bit with tension so any tips would be really appreciated.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/09/2012 20:33

Did I see that we are doing the last two rounds in double crochet, or have I made that bit up?

SoupDragon · 20/09/2012 20:46

First I've heard of it, Pistey. But I've not been paying attention :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/09/2012 20:50

Cheers Soupy Wine

VintageEbonyGold · 20/09/2012 21:36

Ok, I can't do it, so will pull out of doing the blanket as it'll take me a while of practising.

PurplePidjin · 20/09/2012 22:58

Nooooooooooooooo, Vintage, we can sort this - you just picked the one night a week i work!!

Block colours are fab, I'm doing plain too :)

Do you want to do a granny or rows?

And are you nearish Winchester and free on Monday?

OP posts:
VintageEbonyGold · 20/09/2012 23:33

I can do all stitches in straight up rows with funny bits on the side and strange tensions but just tried two different types of granny starting from a loop and end up with 7 holes instead of 4 and a chain at the start/end of the first round on both.

I hope to get to the scottish meet on mon and have sat/sun to practice.

If I start with 6ch then ss to loop, then 3ch, 3tr, 2ch, 3tr rpt to first chain. I have random holes, bizarre tr's and a 3ch, no distinct 3 tr's with 4 holes???

PurplePidjin · 21/09/2012 07:37

(1) Ch 4 + sl st and work in the hole not the stitches, or (2) google Magic Loop, or (3) ch 3 and work into the first ch.

For (1) and (2) ch 2 instead of first tc. (3) you've already done it. That's your starting shell.

#Ch 1, 3tc (shell)# 7 times. Ch 1, sl st to join

Starting shell, ch 1, shell in first gap. $Ch1, shell in next gap. #ch 1, shell# twice in next space$ twice. Ch 1, shell, ch 1, sl st to join.

That's the first two rounds. Each round has a greater number of single shells between the doubles. As long as you do 2 shell between each pair on the previous row, you'll get corners.

Rows are also good. The edges will be hidden by the joining and edging processes, so don't show :)

You can do this

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 21/09/2012 07:40

Ps, when you sl st to join a round, you go into the 2nd of the starting chains - that might be why you get a random chain at the end?

Plus, turn your work at the end of each round (after the first) so you have a nice gaping chasm to work into

:)

Anyone want to see my bear? It's on my profile Grin

SoupDragon · 21/09/2012 08:20

Great bear :)

I"m sure I have a bag of unstuffed bears somewhere which my gran knitted for a refugee project ages ago. If I cold find them ,they'd be perfect for this.

VintageEbonyGold · 21/09/2012 08:29

The bear's brilliant, looks like a polar bear great bear

Pidjin, I don't know what a shell is Blush

droitwichmummy · 21/09/2012 08:32

Great idea soupy. I got a bag of stuffing from the market for £2 and the same stall had eyes and noses.

PurplePidjin · 21/09/2012 08:37

Shell, or cluster, is the collective noun for the group of three treble crochets that make a granny square in my head, anyway

Droitwich, he's gorgeoise!

VintageEbonyGold · 21/09/2012 08:59

Ok, have stuck a knitting needle through to hold the loop and think I have the shell going on as it's kind of working.

VintageEbonyGold · 21/09/2012 10:50

Have posted a pic on my profile I think it's taken the wrong shape

PurplePidjin · 21/09/2012 18:23

You're going into each stitch - for grannies, you need to go into the space you made when you chain stitched between shells :)

I found really useful for getting my head around a granny square. I haven't gone much further... but it's a start Grin

I think the stretching finger blocking bit in the first round or so really helped me. DH did Hmm

VintageEbonyGold · 21/09/2012 20:50

Grin Babara, I was selling her a crochet blanket and said I was learning, she said she could do crochet so I accostted(sp?) her, lovely, lovely woman who spent ages showing me.

Hairy, yes and yes Grin.

Pidjin Thanks and Wine it's exactly like you said and makes sense now.
