I highly recommend that book, the instructions are easy to follow - although I occasionally get confused by the 'blah blah twice to then once to * stuff

I must get on with my cheapy yarn granny squares - although seeing my first granny ahem 'squares' lined up against my newer and much squarer squares makes me a bit but reading about no need to block from the Oh-So-Wise Pidj is re-inspiring me :) Think I might add some roses to the joins to hide some of my sins.

How does everyone join colours on their granny squares? I started one last night and I'd forgotten how much I hate joining colours, I always seems to end up with little lumps!
When you've finished one round , what do you do with the tail - I find them tricky to weave in securely. I do love grannys though, once you are started you can just crack on without following pattern/complicated counting

i also like to art and craft item...

My philosophy with lumps and bumps is that they add to the charm

And I blinkin' HATE tail ends. They drive me crazy and with the stripey blanket I made recently, there were about 500 of the buggers.

Oh I know Flubba, I know I should do them as I go along but I put it off until the end and then spend a bitter half an hour sewing them all in whilst muttering under my breath!

Bring up the last loop of the last stitch of the round in the new colour. Knot pesky ends together. Lay both ends on top of previous row and work stitches over them.

Voila, no sewing.

Does that work with grannys though? Would the colour not show through the gaps

There's still a bit of sewing with grannies or chop the ends off short I'm not magic, you know!

Hiya. Just marking my spot on this thread. I'm a happy hooker and I've been sent here from the wooly hugs thread. I've been hooking for a couple years, self taught courtesy of youtube. I've got a commission to finish and then I'm going to do a mini hugs blanket with my leftover baby wool :)

Browsing and really chuffed to find this thread, may I join? I did a couple of day courses to learn the basics and am hooked! I spend evenings after kids are in bed surrounded by my box of wool and needles. I have been trying to find a pattern for a granny square with a raised central flower, most I have found suggest sewing it on later but I am sure you can make it part of the square. I can do the flowers but not sure how to start it off within the granny, any help would be appreciated.

cezzy I've done this one a couple times raised crocodile flower it's a big old square mind and took me all day!

Are you on ravelry? I've had a few flowers from there, cba with sewing them on. Generally it's a simple case of Make flower, Join new colour in back of a stitch :)
