AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 09:45

Surely if llandb is a serial killer, losing her colleagues' respect is the least of her worries!! Hmmm - embroidery?

Moomin, yours has got to that point where I'm sure it would be unmistakeable,if I'd ever read it!

...he's been gone for months, and I think we should go and look for him...

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 09:51

Ok,Treacle!
Can't imagine why your pet would've caused problems on a cruise, unless your pet is an albatross - but in that case you probably would have been shipwrecked...

MCP!

steamedtreaclesponge · 21/01/2010 09:59

Thank you, Pogle!

...No, he's not an albatross, but he is a bird! Dratted thing...

CJCregg · 21/01/2010 10:03

Treacle, I have also been googling Hilaire Belloc for Moomin's but with no luck. Totally stuck.

Pogle, that is a seriously kind offer. No rush but tomorrow would be good . No, really, the weekend is fine.

Seriously, though, hope the op goes ok and if you'd like me to send you any AFs to read while you're convalescing, just let me know. (Treacle, you really shouldn't jump straight from Autumn Term to Run Away Home, it'll do your head in!!)

Anyway, back to the thread

No, I'm no in WWII, but there is a war on. We've lost everything, and I'm just so worried that my darling husband won't come home. Luckily my sister-in-law was here when the baby came ...

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 10:14

Aha! Well,a lot of people do think YABU! But she does genuinely care for you.And I suppose even if you knew she was desperate to get your husband, you would still defend her...

Only plus point of op is that I will be able to hang around the house reading,MNing and being waited on hand and foot!(of course I do that now,but I feel guilty!)Thanks for the kind offer of AF loans!

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 10:29

Treacle, why on earth did you take your pet on the cruise anyway??

CJCregg · 21/01/2010 10:59

Well done, Pogle! Of course I will defend her - even though I didn't really approve of her dancing whilst in mourning for my poor brother. I just hope that nice Mr Butler will take care of her now and she can settle down and be as happy as I am with my beloved Ashley!

steamedtreaclesponge · 21/01/2010 11:06

Ooh, what was yours, CJ? And OK, maybe I'll sit on Run Away Home until I've found the others - won't take long, right?

Ooh, have just had a thought - they'll be in the British Library, surely? Maybe I should get a reader's card...

...Well, we couldn't leave him at home - who knows what he'd eat! Besides, my daughter thought he'd enjoy the voyage...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/01/2010 11:19

Ooh bum, I knew yours sounded familiar CJ!

Does your secret involve a book, llandb?

...Evil? Well I wouldn't say that, just extremely jealous of my husband. She thinks she's got first dibs for some reason - well he's mine now.

MoominMymbleandMy · 21/01/2010 15:14

Afternoon all!

I don't blame you for thinking the cruise was a mistake, Treacle, but you really should have taken better care of Mortimer's tie! Poor thing.

Ahh, CJ, the penny very belatedly drops .

I'm still mystified by the others, and having trouble wringing anything else out of mine!

But it is a poem (in the sense that it rhymes) and it is not by HB.

Retires to see if it is possible to squeeze anything more out of this AIBU.

TBC and MCP!

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 21/01/2010 15:28

Hmm, Pogle, are you and your brothers, including the lost one, peculiarly vulnerable to natural hazards? Because, if you're the family I'm thinking of, then I'm afraid he's a bad lot and really not worth the effort.

Still deeply puzzled by the wedding cake poisoner and the agent of justice with a dark secret.

Last ditch effort before I abandon this one forever:

...So I really hope you eat your greens just like my granny does. Then you'll never need to carry around any gloopy green stuff to stick bits back on...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 21/01/2010 15:41

Well done, Moomin! No luck even with googling yours, though...

MCP everyone!

AIBU to think she's a bit mental?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/01/2010 16:29

Oh yes, good luck with your op, Pogle, hope it all goes really smoothly and you get lots of reading time

Why, Treacle, is she perhaps seeing things that aren't there? Or just normal custard-down-the-trousers bonkers?

...Sis claims she wasn't trying to sabotage the wedding, said she just cried into the cake mix a bit. AIBU to think she's talking rubbish?

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 16:48

Thanks Elephants ! And I know who you are ,but I have to confess just from someone telling me about it,not from actual reading!Yes,YABU - and it gets worse...All I can say is I'm very glad that my cooking doesn't make the people who eat it feel how I feel - the end of family life as we know it,that would be! It sounds interesting but odd - would you recommend it?

...well,we are vulnerable to natural hazards - it's genetic-but I'm sure our brother isn't a bad lot.I am definately going to look for him,but our oldest brother is being very grumpy about the whole thing - says he can't come because of his leg...

More info please,Treacle!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/01/2010 17:15

...Well it did get worse! She cooked some kind of rose petal concoction and now our other sister is off having sex with a man on a horse! Suppose that's what comes of pouring your emotions into your cooking...

Well done Pogle! I studied it at college and quite enjoyed it, reread last year and it's a good one. Very different and more fun than marquez etc if you ask me. Does make your mouth water though.

No idea on yours though, or anyone else's come to think of it.

M C P !

steamedtreaclesponge · 21/01/2010 17:16

Are you very small and grey, Pogle?

...She keeps following me around. It's getting to be a bit annoying...

MoominMymbleandMy · 21/01/2010 17:31

I was thinking you might be wasting your time following your brother down the bright stream too, Pogle.

What form does the mental behaviour take, Treacle? Is it a share and share alike policy with house mice, floaty dresses and a fondness for dancing in damp fields?

So, what was your one, Elephants? I'm quite sure I've never come across it!

I really can't extract another clue from my AIBU, so I'll treat you to the beginning instead:

"When my right arm fell off
I knew what to do
I stuck it back on with Vegetable Glue
When my head rolled away
I thought it had gone
But I found it again
And stuck it back on..."

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/01/2010 17:46

Ah that sounds brilliant Moomin, never heard of it before. (That's why i don't eat my greens, no doubt.)

Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel was mine, Moomin. Good read

Has she told you why she's following you around Treacle? Do you remind her of someone?

AIBU to dislike his eating habits?

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 19:53

Yes,Treacle and Moomin,I am Baldmoney from the Little Grey Men - down the Bright Stream was the sequel, wasn't it ,and I was thinking I hadn't read that until I checked just now,and it all came flooding back! But I really don't remember anyone being a bad lot and really not worth the effort,so if I've misremembered, sorry!

So is it how he eats,or what he eats,Elephants?

MoominMymbleandMy · 21/01/2010 23:24

No need to apologise, Pogle! But don't you remember when Cloudberry planned to make himself the last gnome in Britain by poisoning the others with toadstool stew? Nasty little tyke!

No ideas on the stalker, the objectionable eating habits or the detective with a secret. MCP for all them!

...AIBU to think my marriage was a mistake?

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/01/2010 23:29

Does your husband spend all his time researching his book, a digest of all mythologies, Moomin? If so YADNBU!

...It's what he eats, it just seems a little close to home.

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 23:32

Did he?? good grief! I have absolutely no memory of that at all - only the bit at the end of Little Grey Men,when they get home and he is there and they are so pleased to see him! If it is in Down the Bright Stream maybe I didn't read that after all!

So,your marriage then? MCP,and Treacle,and Elephants...

Pogleswood · 21/01/2010 23:33

Cross posted,Elephants! MCP,anyway...

MoominMymbleandMy · 21/01/2010 23:48

He did, indeed, Pogle. What a charmer! Happily, a deus ex machina intervenes.

Is your chap a cannibal, Elephants?

...We have nothing in common except our DCs and we seldom agree on them...

Night all!

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/01/2010 00:04

YANBU if it brings up your nerve trouble, Moomin.

...He's not my chap, more of a brother if anything. Not exactly a cannibal but it seems a weird (if very patriotic) choice of food...
