AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/01/2010 12:17

Woohoo treacle! Poor old Helena - marrying a boring man who's been drugged up to love her. (Midsummer Night's Dream for anyone still head-scratching)

I knew yours sounded familiar Treacle...sure your plan will work out fine as long as you beware of young hussies! Why is Anne always portrayed as being so damp? here for example

What was your boat one, Pogle?

Are you constantly enumerating your body parts just in case, Moomin?

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/01/2010 13:54

Afternoon, all!

Well, it depends, Treacle. Do you suffer from terrible seasickness or have you been shipwrecked? I'd say either reason was quite sufficient, especially the seasickness .

...I don't suffer from leprosy. They say it's caused by my diet. And I don't count the parts that fall off, I just re-attach them, thanks to my wonderful centenarian grandmother...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 20/01/2010 14:22

Afternoon, all! Finally managed to log on,my first attempt was foiled by having to go and collect sickly child of a friend from school..

My boat one was Run Away Home,(another Antonia Forest book),Elephants.

Moomin, yours sounds totally bizarre. If you are crumbling, does this mean you are not made of flesh and blood?

AWBU to miss our brother?

MCP,all!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/01/2010 14:59

Depends really Pogle, do you think he'll be away long? Did he run off after a prank for instance?

steamedtreaclesponge · 20/01/2010 15:03

Totally stuck on yours, Moomin...

Pogle, you are probably NBU, but where is your brother? Prison, school, dead?

...We weren't shipwrecked, thank goodness, but that's about the only thing that didn't happen! Catch me going on a cruise again...

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/01/2010 15:21

Did he disgrace the family, Pogle?

So what did go wrong on your cruise, Treacle?

MCP!

My one is on the bizarre side, but charming, and my character is most certainly flesh and blood.

...You see I only like to eat cake. But then one of my arms fell off...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 20/01/2010 15:36

Grr, Run Away Home is one of the ones I haven't read (and desperately want to). Going to weigh straight in, then, and ask Pogle if your brother has left home to escape being beaten?!

My sister-in-law isn't really a bolter, but she hasn't had much luck with her marriages. And she does love to have fun, which is hard in these times. I'd forgive her anything, she's been so kind to me.

CJCregg · 20/01/2010 15:45

PS Moomin, I have no idea what yours is but it's great fun to google!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/01/2010 15:58

Sounds like CJ, Moomin and I could all be thinking of the same book...

On a cake theme:
AIBU to think she ruined my special day on purpose?

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/01/2010 16:13

The mind boggles, CJ!

What sort of bad luck does she have with DHs? Is she a bad picker or a serial widow?

There's a synopsis of Run Away Home in The Marlows and their Maker by Anne Heazlewood. I'd thoroughly recommend it for an AF addict pining for a fix and it's much cheaper than splashing out £80 - £100 on Run Away Home. I'm still kicking myself over the cheap-ish copy I forgot to bid on.

...And when my head came off I thought it had gone forever! But I had some of the special adhesive to stick it back on...

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 20/01/2010 16:21

Did she ruin two birthday cakes, Elephants?

We might be thinking of the same book but I can think of three possible candidates at the moment, any of which would fit Pogle's clues. So it's bound to be none of them!

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/01/2010 16:29

Yours is such a mystery Moomin - can't wait to find out what it is.

...Just the one cake, actually, but that was plenty. My dress was ruined, for a start.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/01/2010 16:32

...Oh and it was my wedding day, just cos she's bitter doesn't mean it's ok to poison us, does it? Accident my foot.

Pogleswood · 20/01/2010 16:33

Sadly, whichever book you are all thinking of,it isn't the one I'm in!
...he went off on an expedition...

By the way,I'm not sure what the ethics of this are,but I would be very happy to copy Run Away Home (Or scan it into the computer -not that I have the skills for that, but DD and DH do!)It's not in print at the moment,is it? I was old enough to be an AF fan,and buying books for myself, when it was published...

Pogleswood · 20/01/2010 17:05

So,Elephants, did this wedding cake disaster involve the entire party,or just you and your DH?

CJCregg · 20/01/2010 17:08

Pogle, I don't give a toss about ethics, I would love to read it. I don't think a synopsis would quite do it, particularly as I need the Nicola/Patrick dialogue from the Twelfth Night party

So you're not doing the Player's Boy, then?! An expedition, hmmm ...

Not a serial widow, Moomin, although her first husband - my brother - did die. And they'd barely been married five minutes, it was so sad. Still, she put a brave face on it.

Pogleswood · 20/01/2010 17:19

Desperate, much,CJ?! The only thing is,I'm having an operation next week - I can't see me managing it before, but afterwards once I'm convalescent and can't drive it would be a nice non-demanding job! So,either watch this space,or CAT me with your contact details...

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/01/2010 17:23

Oooh! Pogle, can you hear the chomp of me biting your hand off! Yes, please, I would love it, in whatever format! And, as for the ethics, I will rush out and buy it in book form the instant it is reprinted!

I'm so excited I can't concentrate on the AIBUs. MCP everyone!

CJ, you'd still like the Heazlewood book. It's got a lovely chapter identifying all the books mentioned in the series, which is worth it alone. I'm sure AF would have enjoyed the AIBU Books game - probably beaten us all hollow at it too.

OK I'll plod on with mine.

...To think this is happening to me just because I wouldn't eat my greens. It's very sad to be a dreadful warning...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 20/01/2010 19:05
Pogleswood · 20/01/2010 19:31

Ok then! (how nice to be able to spread a little happiness...!!)
Sorry,I should've thought to offer sooner.

llandb · 21/01/2010 00:41

Bah, MCP, everyone! You've been busy and I'm lost as a lost thing.

llandb · 21/01/2010 00:44
MoominMymbleandMy · 21/01/2010 00:50

Oh, Pogle, that is lovely of you. But there is certainly no rush. After all, it must be, umm, about a quarter of a century since I borrowed it from the library. I expect I can hold out a bit longer...

Wishing you all the best for the operation and a speedy recovery. Keep us posted.

I am still stumped as a tree, so MCP everyone!

...If only I could be like my granny. She ate all her greens and she's now 104 and hasn't had any bits drop off...

Night, all!

OP posts:
pollywollydoodle · 21/01/2010 03:38

llandb are you a serial killer in your spare time?

moomin, are you in a poem?

steamedtreaclesponge · 21/01/2010 09:35

Erk, this thread is moving on too fast for me!

Moomin, you sound like something from Cautionary Tales! Although that's probably not it... v stuck on yours.

llandb, I can't think what you've been up to on the side - does it involve performing in some way?

Pogle, please please pretty please could you send me Far Away Home too? Then perhaps I will know what you're all talking about Hope the operation isn't too serious and will allow you lots of mumsnetting time whilst recovering!

CJ, are you set in WWII?

Elephants, I don't think YABU at all - she sounds evil...

...I knew it was a mistake to take our pet with us. Why didn't we just take the money instead?
