AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

OP posts:
llandb · 17/01/2010 22:16

Chandeliers for polly!

Dunno why the gravy bit stuck in my memory - guess it's because I'm such a slattern and wander-off-and-oops-the-pot's-burned type

pollywollydoodle · 17/01/2010 22:39

dancing around to to love train in my pants

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 17/01/2010 22:58

Can i just say, deep apologies for my horrendous spelling on this thread, I know how to spell disguise etc, i really do! . At least, sometimes.

Hi Polly and llandb!

Still stuck on yours CJ, but googling furiously. Is there likely to be dog trouble at the beach, would you think?

Feel like I should know yours Treacle, but still NIMCP...

AIBU not to take no for an answer?

pollywollydoodle · 17/01/2010 23:03

hi elephants, NBU persistance is a good trait (unless you are a MIL when you are pushing your luck )

treacle, do your family all take a vow of omerta?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 18/01/2010 00:32

Not a MIL polly, but i'm glad you think I'm doing the right thing. My friend (who knows rather more about these things than I) thinks I should just stay at home and forget about it!

steamedtreaclesponge · 18/01/2010 10:32

More clues please everyone! Feeling a bit dull-witted today.

Yes, Pogle, I was wondering about Teddy Robinson too but apparently this stuffed person doesn't wear dungarees so I don't think it can be him. Unless I am remembering totally wrong which is entirely possible!

...and I'm afraid of my brother too. I just don't want to end up like all those other women...

MoominMymbleandMy · 18/01/2010 13:42

Hello everyone! A belated Happy New Year to you and apologies for the extended absence - this RL lark is a bit of pain at times. I've missed you all and shall endeavour not to vanish for quite so long again!

Great name, Elephants, and lovely to see another book addict on the thread - I hope you too live amidst tottering dusty piles.

Back in the dim mists of time, Pogle, yes, you were quite right about the partridge and the pear tree - Treacle and I were doing The Children of Green Knowe at the same time.
What was your Swedish hair plaiter with the saucepan loving pa, btw? I know CJ got it but her Googling is far superior to mine.

I have no blessed clue what any of you are on about unless CJ needs to be home before dark.

So I'll welly in with my own long-saved one and give the usual cry of MCP!

AIBU to not want to wear a made-over dress?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 18/01/2010 13:49

Hello moomin! Great to have you back again - we've missed you

Sounds like YANBU to me - is your dress shabby velvet, or purple with yellow skyrockets on it?

...it won't be so easy to get out of Sweden though - and living on a tiny island with all my family doesn't help...

pollywollydoodle · 18/01/2010 13:52

Moooooooooomin!!
welcome back!
Real life, what IS that???

YANBU if your name is Amy and you need to be special...

Poledra · 18/01/2010 14:18

Moomin!

Are you worried that Doris won't make a good job of it? Don't be such a snob - just because she cannot afford good clothes doesn't mean she doesn't have an eye for fashion. (Can you tell that's something I've always wanted to say to Ginty? Honestly, the Marlowe children do need to look outside their ivory tower sometimes ).

CJCregg · 18/01/2010 14:47

Moomin!

And straight in with a possible AF, how ruddy marvellous. Unless you're Pauline Fossil? Either way, lovely to have you back.

Is nobody ever going to get mine? I thought it was so easy, but maybe I've given the wrong clues. I was so scared of what might happen at the seaside, I decided to hide so she wouldn't take me. That showed her ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 18/01/2010 15:10

Whew! Thanks for the lovely welcome back and that was breathtakingly fast, Pol and CJ! Ungrateful wretch, that Ginty, when you consider what havoc she managed to wreak with Patrick's heartstrings in that dress at the Twelfth Night party.

Hee, hee, guess what AF I just managed to get hold of at a price rather less eye-watering than I expected. I only need a couple of hundred quid spare to lay hold of The Marlows and the Traitor and Run Away Home and I shall have the lot!

OK, so you're not Teddy Robinson or the teddy owned by Ian Beck's careless heroine, CJ, which leaves me utterly stumped. MCP!

AIBU to write a postcard?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 18/01/2010 15:26

Ah - I've just got Autumn Term from Amazon so soon I will understand some of what you're all talking about when you do AF!

Poledra · 18/01/2010 15:31

Treacle, Peter's Room is the only AF I've ever read [ol' fraud emoticon]

CJCregg · 18/01/2010 16:08

Ah, 'tis one of the best, though, I reckon. And sorry, Pol, you get all the credit for getting that one, I got there too late!

Grr, have still not located missing AFs. January declutter is more than due.

Ha! I've hidden in her dressing-gown pocket. She's running around crying, saying 'Where are you? Where are you?' No trip to the seaside for me today!

(And now I'm giving up on that one, it's simply not worth the brainache.)

Moomin, so lovely to have you back.

steamedtreaclesponge · 18/01/2010 16:14

So who are you, CJ? Think I might have to give up on mine as well, getting bored of it now! Also I just realised that if you haven't read it, I've totally given away the plot

So I might start a new one...

AIBU to think my daughter's a bit ugly?

MoominMymbleandMy · 18/01/2010 16:31

Oh well, cheating by Googling does not help one bit with your one, Treacle. Perhaps Sweden is the jinx on this thread.

And, as for your new one, It's not that U. [bad mother emoticon] When my DS was handed to me, I took one look and said: "I hope you have brains, my dear." I think he's beautiful now!

Umm, CJ, desperate fishing here. Are you blue?

And it is lovely to be back even if you're all over-stretching the few brain cells I have left.

...I don't think it's U. I think it's the only thing to do. I'm going to write a lot more of them...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 18/01/2010 20:02

Moomin! You're back - excellent! Great to have you back, and if I wasn't a repressed british stiff upper lip type it'd be ! Luckily for you,I am repressed etc!

My googling has led me to wonder if you are in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,Treacle? I haven't read it,but am now thinking I must!
My swedish one was Little O,by Edith Unnerstad - she also wrote The Saucepan Journey, amongst others, which is where that reference was from.Lovely funny books,DSis and I loved them.
So,who are you CJ? I'm sure this is going to be one of those where I'm kicking myself - it sound so familiar - just not identifiable...
MCP!

CJCregg · 18/01/2010 20:28

Moomin has it (fresh eyes, you see) - I am indeed blue, and marsupial to boot. Phew, can now leave that one behind (just like Lily did!)

AIBU to stick up for my sister-in-law?

MoominMymbleandMy · 18/01/2010 23:04

Aw, Pogle, I am not repressed and lack a stiff upper lip so you shall have a most unMN hug anyway. Ssh, before I get thrown out into a wilderness of huns and tickers!

Blue Kangaroo brings back happy memories, CJ, even if they're obviously not particularly clear ones. DD loved them but DS the destroyer can only be trusted with the board book version of the first one for now.

So what's your SIL been up to? Adultery, poisoning, dabbling in women's suffrage? MCP!

...I wonder if anyone reads them. But even if only a few people understand my message it will be worth it...

OP posts:
llandb · 18/01/2010 23:47

Wave to Moomin! (ooh ouch, me shoulder; pained quiver of upper lip; should learn to wave like the Queen). Wondered what would happen if the thread filled up without you . And what we would do without you, thread-filling or none (wincing one-armed hug due to wave-induced dickey shoulder)

And are you posting in the Classifieds, perhaps to ask whether anyone remembers certain events?

Treacle, no glass slippers, I hope!

MCP?

AIBU to keep my private life private?

Pogleswood · 19/01/2010 00:15

And on the rollercoaster that is AIBU Books I am now stuck again...

MCP,all, and AIBU to thnk they're dead?

llandb · 19/01/2010 00:23

Pogle, were you on a submarine? Or have you been looking at the saplings on my windowsill IRL (think it's thrip )

Well I'd be mortified if my colleagues found out....

'Night, all, and MCP!

Pogleswood · 19/01/2010 00:36

thrip!?! No thrip in my AIBU! (sorry about your saplings,though...)
Night all!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 19/01/2010 01:31

Blimey it's been busy! And what a lovely new crop of AIBUs...none of which I have a clue about. MCP?

...Well apparently not only has he turned me down, now he's after my best mate!
