Did I make a faux pas at child’s party by not bringing a present ?

My child was invited to a birthday party for the first time last weekend and it didn’t even cross my mind to bring along a present… it was only when I saw a pile of presents in the courner that it made me wonder if that is the done thing.

I’d totally forgotton about the party, and only remembered when one of the other mums text me asking where I was so I also didn’t have a card either and got there halfway through.

Have I made a faux pas here ?! I did apologies for not remebering the card but it’s a bit late now.

Yes

party means bring present

Elizabethandfour · 04/10/2026 11:53

Yes. It’s not too late. Leave a present on their doorstep.

ByTipsyShark · 04/10/2026 11:53

Of course you take a present along to a children’s birthday party

User1606042727 · 04/10/2026 11:53

Yes you should have taken a present

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 04/10/2026 11:53

yes, obviously you take a small gift, take one monday and say you forgot it at home 😂

littlefireseverywhere · 04/10/2026 11:54

Get something today,& drop it round to
them.

Gloriia · 04/10/2026 11:54

If you attend a birthday party it is the norm to take a card and small present.

Haven't you or your dc been to parties before?

muggart · 04/10/2026 11:54

did you not get presents or have parties as a child?

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/10/2026 11:54

Eh? Who goes to a kids birthday party without a present? Get one and leave it on their doorstep?

12345onceIcaughta · 04/10/2026 11:54

Why didn’t it cross your mind?
How many children’s parties have you gone to where no one took presents.
Also incredibly rude to not have it in your diary and turn up half way.
I would be sending a present along with an apology.

Twoweeksinaugust · 04/10/2026 11:54

Stick a tenner in a card and put it through their letterbox today.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 04/10/2026 11:54

Yeah, invite to little child's birthday party = little child's birthday gift. 🎁

Kombuchainmykoffee · 04/10/2026 11:55

Agree with pp, if you already apologised for forgetting the card just drop it round or send it into school with your DC. Bung a fiver into it!

This.

Shinyandnew1 · 04/10/2026 11:55

Yes. Give the card that you ‘forgot’ to the parent on Monday/take to their home and put £5/£10 in it.

gamerchick · 04/10/2026 11:55

Yeah you take a card and a gift/coins unless it's one of those weird ones where they say they dont want one. It's not too late to stick a fiver in a card and give it in drop off though.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/10/2026 11:55

Of course YRBU. You’re an adult and are quite aware that going to a birthday party involves a gift and card-or are you saying you have never been to a birthday party or had one yourself? Deliver a card and gift and apologise for forgetting on the day.

Thesummer · 04/10/2026 11:55

Yes, a big faux pas.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 04/10/2026 11:56

Just buy a present and take it into school/nursery. This is fairly common, as presents do get forgotten/left in bags/simply not yet purchased!

In future, have a supply of cheapo cards from somewhere like the Card Factory, and either keep an eye out for good value toys in the supermarket/B&M Bargains, or slide in a £5 or £10 note (whatever you can afford, and is the going rate in your area).

HoraceCope · 04/10/2026 11:57

presumably you know from them nursery or school?
take it in next time you see them saying that you forgot it

MCF86 · 04/10/2026 11:57

It would have been pretty obvious you forgot if you only turned up after the mum text you so I can't imagine they were surprised. It would be nice to drop something round though.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2026 11:57

To be honest......if it was one of those whole class things I doubt they noticed 😁

viques · 04/10/2026 11:58

Yes. You take a present and a card and you get there on time.

At the end of the party if it is a drop and run, you make sure you arrive in time to pick your child up, oh and remember to say Thankyou to the hosts. A text to say xxx had a lovely time, thank you for inviting him doesn’t harm either.

Also don’t look in the party bag and say loudly “load of plastic crap, put it in the bin”

Moonnstarz · 04/10/2026 11:59

Yes it is the norm to take a present.
You might get posters saying if it's a whole class party that they wouldn't want 30 gifts but I bet they would notice who hadn't brought anything.

Pop £5 in a card or buy something today and give to them at school/nursery on Monday.

ShitFacedShakespeare · 04/10/2026 11:59

What's all this 'leave it on the doorstep' weirdness? 🤣

Just knock and hand it to them like a normal person would, or give it to them on Monday.
