AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

Kind gesture from your neighbour.

FiveEightNine · 03/10/2026 06:48

How? Toasted. Than it doesn't matter that much.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 03/10/2026 06:49

You have a lovely neighbour.

Lifestooshort71 · 03/10/2026 06:50

Because 55-80p is on budget for them? I hope you were more gracious to your neighbour.

Shatenoeuf · 03/10/2026 06:50

Its the texture of this stuff a lot of people like - its very easy to eat. I think when you eat a lot of cheap processed food you get used to it & very freah homemade stuff becomes too overwhelming.

Lets face it though, most people buying it do so because its be very cheap and what they can afford.

DuringDinnerMints · 03/10/2026 06:50

Because it's cheap?

JustGoogleIt15 · 03/10/2026 06:51

How kind of your neighbour to help you. What a shame your takeaway from this is to criticise

Abali · 03/10/2026 06:52

Your neighbour sounds lovely.

i mostly buy it, it’s cheap and I’m fine with it being tasteless I just want it to essentially hold my sandwich fillings.

Seymour5 · 03/10/2026 06:52

We generally have wholemeal bread, sometimes sourdough. But a slice of white Toastie (not the cheapest but quite basic) toasted with proper butter and marmalade is heaven for me! Comfort food.

There was a time when I bought a lot of our food based on cost, cheap white loaves, lots of spuds etc. There are lots of households who are in that situation.

Childishprodigy · 03/10/2026 06:54

My youngest has a soya allergy and it's the only bread I can get that doesnt have soya in it apart from the expensive bakery bread and like many I'm on a budget. For many it's all they can afford. Be grateful for your kind neighbour.

Valerie267 · 03/10/2026 06:58

Bog standard white packaged sliced bread is probably the biggest seller by some margin in this country. So for many, many people, this IS a white loaf. I agree it's not very nice when you're used to something with a bite more "bite" made the traditional way, but it wasn't a random or weird choice. If you'd wanted a specific brand or something from a particular bakery then you should have specified.

LydiaJayne · 03/10/2026 06:58

Your title doesn't make sense and there's no way it can be voted on

I don't eat white bread because I prefer something with more texture but I'm sure other people do like it and as everyone else has said it's what they can afford. Not a mystery really

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/10/2026 06:59

Cheap white bread is the best bread for a crisp sandwich, plenty of butter and either salt and vinegar Walkers or Cheese Wotsits. It just isn’t as good if you use a nicer, fancier, more flavourful bread it needs the texture and plainness of the cheap version.

GarlicEverything · 03/10/2026 07:01

How can people eat cheap white bread?

Cheese and crisp sandwich

Chip sandwich

Bacon and egg sandwich

With gravy

When making summer pudding

Toasted, with butter.

Glad you're feeling better!

MyFavouriteGame · 03/10/2026 07:04

People buy it because it’s cheap, some people have no money.

Also cheap white bread makes the best toast and bacon sandwich.

Upsetbetty · 03/10/2026 07:06

Which wholemeal do you eat?

Isittimeformynapyet · 03/10/2026 07:06

If you're not going to finish it you can use it a bit like playdough (sp?) and make little "bread" models with it.

You shouldn't be able to do that with bread, but you can.

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Morecoffeeneedef · 03/10/2026 07:07

I prefer better quality bread but a slice of well buttered hot toast from a cheap supermarket loaf can taste divine.

AlphabetBird · 03/10/2026 07:07

How silly of you. People like the taste of different things. Cheap white bread is great for lots of things, expensive fancy bread is also great.

To the pp who said some people would be overwhelmed by fancier bread, do catch yourself on. It’s all just bread.

OPs comments are about the bread, not the neighbour.
