AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

Cheap white bread is the best bread for a crisp sandwich, plenty of butter and either salt and vinegar Walkers or Cheese Wotsits. It just isn’t as good if you use a nicer, fancier, more flavourful bread it needs the texture and plainness of the cheap version.

Yep or a fish finger, bacon or sausage sandwich - the rest of the time I like granary bread.

TotaleclipseinFrance · 03/10/2026 07:57

As well as being ungrateful and not understanding that it's all some can afford, cheap white bread actually makes better toast than that sourdough trendy crap.

Tulipsriver · 03/10/2026 07:57

Your neighbour sounds lovely.

People like different things, surely you understand that? (Or are you just waiting for people to congratulate you on your superior taste buds?)

I can't stand prawns. The look, taste, and texture turns my stomach... I can still appreciate that other people like them though 🤷‍♀️

You have the clue to your answer within your own question!

I like the M&S sliced cheap white bread, the thick white super soft loaf.

Ultraalox · 03/10/2026 08:02

I actually love cheap white bread. I earn a decent wage, it’s not about the cost. It’s just a guilty pleasure!

Nuts -they are an unnecessary food group and with the amount of allergies in schools and clubs I would rather keep a nut and seed free home when packing lunches

Nuts are really good for health. Lots of research shows that eating nuts regularly reduces the risks of nut allergies. It's our go to snack.

OP-A little bit of everything is good including white bread. All breads have a place! A white loaf can be a hero for many people maybe not as privileged snobby as you.

Nuts are also chock full of fats.
I am under the bariatrics team and I’ve been told to avoid them, as the fibre-benefits (which are apparently the only health benefit) can be very easily eaten elsewhere.
So I’ll keep them out of my kitchen. My kids don’t have allergies, but I’d rather not allow someone else’s airborne allergen potential death on my hands.

God, I love a crisp sandwich!!! I agree, thick white bread is best for this (though generally I eat wholemeal or sourdough), lashings of Lurpak, and preferably salt and vinegar crisps.

Fizbosshoes · 03/10/2026 08:07

Sometimes quite fancy afternoon tea sandwiches are made with very thin white bread...

Dontlletmedownbruce · 03/10/2026 08:08

People like different things OP. It's shocking, isn't it

Flaskfan · 03/10/2026 08:09

Can't make a butty jam unless it's on white bread.

I’ve never known someone to have the exact same crisp sandwich order to me! People look at me like I’ve got two heads if I say Wotsit sandwich.

Of course you have. You're just trying to be edgy by coming over all Violet Crawley. Sorry for your massive fail and better luck next time I guess.

Oh my gosh.

Best post I have seen on here in a very long time!

HelloPossible · 03/10/2026 08:10

The 75p loaves from M & S are descent for toast or a sandwich, I buy white or wholemeal, I don’t find either offensive. I actually think the bigger brands packaged bread which is more expensive worse. Although fresh bread from a bakers is obviously nicer.

whatsgoingonhey · 03/10/2026 08:10

It’s all some peasants can afford 🙄

BunnyLake · 03/10/2026 08:15

I buy ‘fancy’ bread as the norm, but sometimes you just can’t beat a cheap white loaf for toast.

Tryingtobenormal124 · 03/10/2026 08:15

Unfortunately for some people that's all they can afford.

Fizbosshoes · 03/10/2026 08:16

I really want some basic white bread now....but DH is as snobby as OP about it, I might have to covertly buy some and hide it in the freezer!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 03/10/2026 08:19

I make all our bread and it's always wholemeal or granary BUT I sometimes buy a big bag of cheap white scufflers from the market because white bread is bloody delicious.

Egg chips and beans, with thick white bread and butter. Can't get much better than that.

Njuy · 03/10/2026 07:13

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

Some people don't have much choice OP. They have hungry mouths to feed and very little money to do so.

Or they just like that kind of bread!

For those who feel superior about their artisanal bread choices, may I draw your attention to companies like this
https://thebreadfactory.co.uk/our-products/frozen/
Ever wondered why most of the bakery stalls at farmers markets, and 'handmade' or artisanal breads in delis or restaurants etc, all look the same? There are a number of large-scale factories churning this stuff out for wholesale.

Nothing wrong with that, but I think people imagine it's been freshly and lovingly made in small batches by the seller. Life isn't a Hallmark movie.

Actually, I do think some of the farmers market stalls misrepresent what they are selling. Few of them have made the bread themselves but that's the impression they create.
