AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

My son can only eat white bread, pasta etc due to medical reasons so white it is.

JMSA · 04/10/2026 01:21

It makes banging toast.

OpheliaNightingale · 04/10/2026 01:40

It has its place, cut into tiny triangles, crusts cut neatly off, a mix of different delicious fillings, and nicely presented with cakes on a stand for an afternoon tea.

Fourhippos · 04/10/2026 01:49

Normally I have nice bakery sourdough. If I'm ill though it has to be basic cheap white bread for toast. No idea why but it's great when ill.

FFSItsTooHot · 04/10/2026 01:51

Because it's all thru can afford? Not everyone can afford £2 for a loaf of bread.

Thebestthingsinlife · 04/10/2026 06:43

Because that’s all they can afford. Be grateful for your neighbour and also that you can afford expensive bread. Some people can only afford cheap things like frozen food, cheap bread and tin food.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 04/10/2026 07:45

Mothers Pride plain loaf.

The Scots are truly blessed to have this our lives. I often travel south with a stash. It’s impossible to make at home.

dip this into tinned tomato soup, thank me later.

NimbleTaupeTiger · 04/10/2026 08:05

A lot of people with IBD eat that bread purely because it's very easily digestible and doesn't cause bowel problems. Can I have your neighbour please?

LuckyHazelFox · 04/10/2026 08:11

Cheese and onion crisps put in a cheese mayo sandwich - yes please 😛

Kind gesture from your neighbour.

Wasn't it just.
The OP needs to give herself a shake and realise for a lot of people that is all they can afford.

Chickadee001 · 04/10/2026 08:22

OMG a neighbour does you af avour and you're criticising her choice of bread! Ooh let me guess? You're a Waitrose sour dough person! My response would be flipping well get it yourself nexct time, personally I find regular white rtoast bread more than adequate to do the job!

LouH1981 · 04/10/2026 09:43

I manage. I was brought up on it in the 80’s so it was all I knew. I’m now recovering from a small bowel obstruction and can only eat white bread.

OMG it’s the best! When I was pregnant I was craving it and I emailed the manufacturer to ask them to send me some in England and they wouldn’t, but I found you can order it online from Morrisons so it’s the only reason I stick with them for my supermarket deliveries!

I’m low carb by necessity due to T2 diabetes that just will not behave if I dare to allow carbs to pass my lips. God I miss bread! Used to love the jalepeno and cheddar fresh bread from the co-op toasted with real butter. 😭😩😭

That sounds lovely!

Maybe you could experiment with almond and coconut flour at home to make it! Although it will never be the same!

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

If you haven't had a picnic by the river together with a Salt and Vinegar crisp sandwich and a glass of tizer you just still have a lot of living to do!!! 😄

HildaGribblethwaiteLives · 04/10/2026 12:56

I don't like brown bread. I don't like the taste of it - even worse if there are nuts and seeds involved. I don't think I am the only person in the world who thinks this. So why are almost all pre-packed sandwiches made with brown bread?

Yes I know that it is "better" for you, but I don't like the taste.

If there is white available it is usually just very basic ham or cheese. Only notable exception is the M&S roast beef with horseradish sandwich.

No, I don't want a baguette or a wrap or a panini (?sp) that has been heated to the approximate temperature of the sun thereby nuking the taste/texture of the filling.

I'd like to be able to spend time at an airport and have the opportunity to buy a vaguely tasty sandwich for the plane.

Tuesdayschild50 · 04/10/2026 13:42

Just be grateful really .

It turns my stomach when I see people eating white bread sandwiches at work. There's nothing good about it. Vile stuff, it should be banned.

let's ALL go round the @Middleagedspreadisreal 's work and eat out crisp butties together

I have a no knead bread recipe if you’d like, it’s about 5 minutes work and I leave it all say and cook in the evening for 45 minutes. Come out looking like a £3 loaf for 50p

Could I have the recipe please?

Bloody hell. A crisp sandwich really isn’t that unusual. Haven’t done it for years but I’m tempted now.

Have friends living in France who go to the village bakery every day. Whenever we visit we are asked to bring three white sliced loaves because they say they can't get proper toasting bread there. Last time we went they had a French toasting loaf from the supermarket. It was horrible, really sweet.

Are your friends French?

Toasted white bread for breakfast isn't really a thing here. The white square supermarket loaves here are pain de mie, which is deliberately sweetened and used to make croque monsieur or children's sandwiches. It's not the equivalent of white UK supermarket bread, which doesn't exist here.

More common for breakfast if you really want something toasted are pain grillés, or biscottes - basically bread slices that have already been toasted, and are eaten cold with jam etc.

DoraSpenlow · 04/10/2026 16:47

They are English and thoroughly embrace the French way of life. But, sometimes, they just want a slice of British style toast.

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

People have different tastes? It's not that hard to understand, surely. 😕
Sometimes it's cheap and filling if you don't have much money either.
I prefer granary or seeded wholemeal bread, but sometimes toasted white cheap bread is great, or buttered and dunked into tomato soup ♥️
