AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Of course you have. You're just trying to be edgy by coming over all Violet Crawley. Sorry for your massive fail and better luck next time I guess.

ToffeePennie · 03/10/2026 07:12

How do we eat it? As sandwiches or toast. I let some go stale and use it in cooking or make croutons.
why do we eat it? Because we like the taste, it’s just a filler for us, it’s within our weekly budget and cane make up to 10 meals if we add an egg/beans or tinned tomatoes to it. My oldest also has autism and likes very particular mouthfeels to his food - the same every time - so it’s easier for us all to eat it.
I cannot digest wholewheat bread or seeded bread as it makes me very sick, and I try to have no nuts/seeds in the house (they are an unnecessary food group and with the amount of allergies in schools and clubs I would rather keep a nut and seed free home when packing lunches).
I also cannot stress enough: Lidl bread is 43p a loaf of white, for wholemeal or seeded loaves they start at 86p, that’s double; I could by two loaves and do breakfast and lunch for our family on 86p, rather than one set of allergy unfriendly lunches!

Are you from the UK (not sure if it’s England specific) - it’s very popular/common - or at least it used to be… not sure if the youngsters still do this. I was never a fan myself, but lots seem to love them.

Fatiguedwithlife · 03/10/2026 07:12

I like the taste and texture of hovis white sliced.
I also made a seeded batch loaf yesterday by hand, and we had a co-op sourdough loaf (toasted) with my roasted butternut squash soup for lunch yesterday.
It’s possible to enjoy a lot of things, you just sound like a silly bread snob, how peculiar.

FruAashild · 03/10/2026 07:12

My Mum would give us homemade wholemeal bread when we were recovering from a stomach bug 'because it's plain food that is easy on your stomach'. I never really understood why - wholemeal bread is recommended in your diet precisely because it is hard to digest whereas when recovering from a sick bug I always wanted high calorie food that was very easy to digest (aka chocolate). Anyway, consider my mind blown because obviously it's cheap white bread that is recommended because of the easily accessible calories 🤯.

Anyway, as others have said it was a lovely gesture from your neighbour and the clue is in the name as to why people eat cheap white bread.

You’re a snob op

How kind of your neighbour to help you. What a shame your takeaway from this is to criticise

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

Your neighbour is kind, but I'm sure you appreciate them.
I eat white bread because of my IBS.
Some people because they like it.
Sone people because it's cheap.
Variety in life and taste.... who'd a thunk?!

We've just said why. Perhaps there are things that you do daily that others wouldn't understand.

MixedBananas · 03/10/2026 07:16

I only ever use it for French Toast. It soaks up the ingredients and gets dluddy inside.

Morecoffeeneedef · 03/10/2026 07:07

I prefer better quality bread but a slice of well buttered hot toast from a cheap supermarket loaf can taste divine.

Exactly this. I normally have lovely nubbly seeded granary / wholemeal, or nice chunky fresh baked white loaves on occasion, but I still love cheap white slices sometimes - it’s very very different but toasted with butter it’s delicious in its own way.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 03/10/2026 07:16

Because thry dont have the luxury of an unlimited food budget.

I think we need to explain to her what a "weekend" is.

Moonnstarz · 03/10/2026 07:17

I will buy it because as others mention the price. A load of Hovis is probably 70p more and isn't much different.

If you mean buying fresh bread from a proper bakery then I don't have the time to do that. I agree it is nicer but that would mean going into town, paying then to park, plus also it wouldn't work because of the opening hours. This type of bread also doesn't last so if I went today it would need to be eaten over the weekend.

Meadowfinch · 03/10/2026 07:17

Err, because many people can't afford anything else.

I agree with your assessment though. It's vile. Nasty, flabby, tasteless.

I gave up on supermarket bread about five years ago and have made my own ever since, using decent quality wholemeal flour. Bread that has taste and texture and a real crust.

I make bread early most Sunday mornings, takes very little time and effort, and I enjoy it. Most think it's not worth the bother though.

How could you not work that out?

LlynTegid · 03/10/2026 07:18

Kind of your neighbour. People have different tastes, like you I choose what I consider decent bread.

Hotels and guest houses should always offer brown/wholemeal bread as an option as part of breakfast.

Katypp · 03/10/2026 07:19

I think what the OP wants to tell us is that she would NEVER eat white bread as her taste is too refined for such rubbish.
Still it's given a few more posters a chance to flaunt their equal good taste.

Very nice gesture from your neighbour. You sound like a snob, there are people out there who do not have the choice

And it's much cheaper of course, and the cost of living only goes up, and children tend to like it.

Gilleep · 03/10/2026 07:22

I agree it’s disgusting and the way they make it means it isn’t really bread in any meaningful sense. There are plenty of people eating it who could afford better. They do it because their tastes have been ruined by modern food culture.

Njuy · 03/10/2026 07:13

Because they enjoy it? Because it’s what their kids like? Because they’re on a tight budget? It’s very unimaginative of you not to be able to come up with at least one reason.

chichi001 · 03/10/2026 07:23

Because we get through a loaf of bread a day.

I can't afford to be spending a fortune on bread.

Plus, we don't mind it
