AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

You're obviously using cheap spread on your toast not real butter if you think it's tasteless. And to the posters talking about crisp sandwiches, the only appropriate crisps for a crisp sandwich are Tayto or King cheese and onion. Walkers are the worst crisp ever invented! 🤢

Now you're asking. Perhaps if you repackage it in something with the word artisanal on it?.
I don't know, I've just got a Nissan.

Nissan drivers definitely can’t afford anything but plastic bread, it’s the fuel consumption gives it away

MassiveOvaryaction · 03/10/2026 07:44

I barely eat bread of any kind these days but white bread tastes of childhood, that's why I eat it.

Fizbosshoes · 03/10/2026 07:45

I dont eat it all the time, I like most types of bread, but i love egg mayo sandwiches, or marmite sandwiches on basic white bread, so nice.
And the texture is easier to eat if you've not been able to eat for a few days

ScarlettOYara · 03/10/2026 07:37

I think it's already been explained why people make that choice.
Also, "artisanal"? Really?.😁

It just means made using a normal process instead of complex factory processing

IslaStC · 03/10/2026 07:46

Food made using traditional processes, not highly complex and additive-heavy industrial processes. It’s not pretentious to think ultra processed white bread is terrible. There’s plenty of evidence it’s bad for your health and in places with a thriving culture of accessible artisanal baking (France) people don’t choose to eat it in anything like the same numbers.

Whilst I don’t eat the white bread described, I am allergic and intolerant to the word ‘artisanal’! it make me cringe so much. Where I live, it’s a descriptor beloved of pretentious food snobs!

TroysMammy · 03/10/2026 07:46

Cheap white bread, the best either for fish finger, chip or Pek tinned meat sandwiches. Also great for bread pudding or breadcrumbs for stuffing.

Forton26 · 03/10/2026 07:47

I love coops own white toastie bread does that class as cheap?. for toast. I grew up with cheap white bread. I’m not dead yet. So cheap white bread as a previous poster says it does make great crisps butties. That’s prob a bit to carby and UPF for mumsnet.

However i do also regularly seeded wholemeal m&s and even sourdough on occasion. Its almost like we can have a bit of everything in a balanced diet even cheap white bread.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/10/2026 07:47

I couldn’t eat it because:
a) My digestive system wouldn’t like it (heartburn and constipation) and I would be hungry again about 20 minutes after eating it.

b) I am lucky to be able to afford granary bread from my local bakery so I buy that instead because it tastes much better and my body prefers it.

I wouldn’t start a thread about it though or talk to people about it in real life because it’s probably the best that some people can afford.

HoraceCope · 03/10/2026 07:48

how can people be so ignorant
to criticise people's bread choices.

HoraceCope · 03/10/2026 07:49

i love it toasted with marmite
or with nutella
each to their own

Yes. I have come across the word before. I live in a very middle class area and that word adorns most food outlets.

ilovemybabyboysomuch · 03/10/2026 07:50

I remember your thread about popping to the supermarket and hearing babies crying which made you buy alcohol when you weren’t going to?
Is this why you sent your neighbour to pop to the shop for you?
I think you can make alcohol from bread if you don’t want to eat it.
Kind neighbour though.

AmnesiacDream · 03/10/2026 07:50

I grew up on cheap white bread. Changed to wholewheat as an adult once I learnt a bit more about diet. Now I'm with you OP and I can't stand it. As you said - it's like there's nothing there but a nasty texture.

RaininSummer · 03/10/2026 07:50

With you OP. It's pointless pap. Might as well eat cardboard. Also makes me feel quite rough quickly as it's high GI. But your neighbour was kind.

How do we eat it? As sandwiches or toast. I let some go stale and use it in cooking or make croutons.
why do we eat it? Because we like the taste, it’s just a filler for us, it’s within our weekly budget and cane make up to 10 meals if we add an egg/beans or tinned tomatoes to it. My oldest also has autism and likes very particular mouthfeels to his food - the same every time - so it’s easier for us all to eat it.
I cannot digest wholewheat bread or seeded bread as it makes me very sick, and I try to have no nuts/seeds in the house (they are an unnecessary food group and with the amount of allergies in schools and clubs I would rather keep a nut and seed free home when packing lunches).
I also cannot stress enough: Lidl bread is 43p a loaf of white, for wholemeal or seeded loaves they start at 86p, that’s double; I could by two loaves and do breakfast and lunch for our family on 86p, rather than one set of allergy unfriendly lunches!

Nuts -they are an unnecessary food group and with the amount of allergies in schools and clubs I would rather keep a nut and seed free home when packing lunches

Nuts are really good for health. Lots of research shows that eating nuts regularly reduces the risks of nut allergies. It's our go to snack.

OP-A little bit of everything is good including white bread. All breads have a place! A white loaf can be a hero for many people maybe not as privileged snobby as you.

SeedsOfReason · 03/10/2026 07:51

It depends what you are looking for from your bread. Sometimes you don't want a lot of flavour. Sliced white is great for a proper, greasy bacon buttie - it soaks up the grease so the whole thing tastes of bacon (and HP if you're like me).

Also works better than anything else if you're making toasted sandwiches in a Breville type toaster.

If you're wanting to eat the bread on its own or just with butter, you'd probably choose something higher-end, but sliced white has its place.

pulpJarvis · 03/10/2026 07:52

i don’t buy it as it has no taste and is fairly awful. Don’t like sandwiches when I’m out made with it either. But it does make the best bacon butties. Guess people buy it because it’s their budget or they like it….

Gourdgirl · 03/10/2026 07:52

Crisp sandwiches are great! With salad cream and cress. Have to say only on granary for me...i hate any white bread, artisnal or cheap.

Beachtastic · 03/10/2026 07:53

It has its uses!!! My boss in Australia took me to catch fresh prawns from the river and we ate those with bog-standard white bread. It was amazing, much nicer than with "proper" wholemeal bread.

DedododoDedadada · 03/10/2026 07:53

I don't particularly like any regular sliced white, I'd rather have wholemeal or home made.

Perhaps that's the answer. @Njuyshould have a gin still installed.
Oh she could make "artisanal" gin!

HoraceCope · 03/10/2026 07:54

i am very disappointed i dont have white bread for my boiled egg this morning.

BCBird · 03/10/2026 07:56
