AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Really? A crisp butty is a delight to behold! My favourite is cheese and onion crisps, Warburtons toast ie white bread with Lurpak butter and a dollop of salad cream. Delish!

It's really interesting to read that some people find white bread digestible. I get constipation if I so much as look at it. Oh I wish it wasn't so!!

You can't beat it for toast!

quackquack1514 · 04/10/2026 17:26

I agree, it's gross and no one should eat it because it's like eating plastic, it does nothing good for you.

HostaCentral · 04/10/2026 17:26

Lots of people with digestives issues can't eat wholemeal, or seeded or high fibre. White us therefore the only go to. I do but expensive sourdough though ......

I do find it interesting why we are so obsessed with "brown" in the UK, when much of Europe eats almost exclusively white bread, white pasta and white rice.

Are your friends French?

Toasted white bread for breakfast isn't really a thing here. The white square supermarket loaves here are pain de mie, which is deliberately sweetened and used to make croque monsieur or children's sandwiches. It's not the equivalent of white UK supermarket bread, which doesn't exist here.

More common for breakfast if you really want something toasted are pain grillés, or biscottes - basically bread slices that have already been toasted, and are eaten cold with jam etc.

or a breadmaker

That shit bread is a result of capitalism maximising profit over the quality and value of the product. British economy in a nutshell.

ForPlumReader · 04/10/2026 18:04

You probably adore sourdough, I dislike it, but I don't judge you for eating it. You're lucky to have a kind and thoughtful neighbour.

Really, we were brought up on them??? They are the best, only marginally beaten by a chip butty..

It's the only type of bread my son can eat due to bowel issues so I'd say it definitely does good for him. Wholemeal anything would send him straight to hospital.

Daftypants · 04/10/2026 20:05

I often buy the wholemeal thick sliced basic loaf for 75p .
If we want white bread I tend to get the cottage or farmhouse loaf which is a bit pricier but nicer.
it makes lovely toast

RobertaFirmino · 04/10/2026 20:09

How can people eat it? I think what they do is open their mouths, take a bite of the bread, chew it then swallow it. At least, I think that's what they do. Don't quote me on that.

And a chip butty has to be on cheap white bread. Can you imagine putting it on a malted or seedy loaf? What an abomination.

T1Dmama · 05/10/2026 00:00

Toasted it’s not much different, especially once it’s got an inch of marmite on 🤣

Ruby866 · 05/10/2026 00:13

Hope you are feeling better @Njuy and it was kind of your neighbour.
Many people buy it because it's cheap. It's what we grew up eating.

I stopped eating white bread when my husband made me read a few pages of this book. I forget which page talks about pigs pancreas, but I never ate it again!

Imagine getting so wound up on people eating white bread "no one should be eating it" "it should be banned". Being able to look down on what people eat comes from a place of privilege. For many people it's all they can afford. Many people's grievances about cheap white bread would be better aimed at being annoyed at why healthier bread can't be more affordable.

And anyway from a nutritional stand point, isn't the advice for babies and young toddlers is to give them white bread as brown bread has too much fibre. It definitely has it's place for many people.

I had a craving for it in hospital last year, cheese sandwich on white, nothing else, the cheese was that pre sliced mildish cheddar too, Funny how brain surgery affects you

Well it just encourages the Strickland-Venables, they’ve been behaving rottenly, they’ve even taken their grooms out of top hats…

I love white bread, particularly when it has an indefinite shelf life, can't live without it😆 I hate sourdough 😆
