AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

I think what the OP wants to tell us is that she would NEVER eat white bread as her taste is too refined for such rubbish.
Still it's given a few more posters a chance to flaunt their equal good taste.

Yes, how very tedious.

topcat2014 · 03/10/2026 07:24

I love the cheapest half and half sliced lidl bread. Fits in the toaster easily

AnnaQuayRules · 03/10/2026 07:24

Budget
Preference
Food intolerances

I dislike cheap white bread, other people dislike fancy granary. I'm lucky that we have the budget and access to a decent bakery. Many people don't.

The loaf we tend to buy is £6 and useless for sandwiches. For most people that would be out of budget and not practical if they want to make sandwiches.

IslaStC · 03/10/2026 07:25

Grew up in the 70s and 80s on Sunblest. Loved it with raspberry jam.

Gravygranules · 03/10/2026 07:25

What a nice neighbour!

Why do people eat it? Cheap, good for a cheese & crisp sandwich, kids like it, they've got a lot of people to feeds, allergies, they're having fish & chips for tea and it's perfect for chip butties.

I agree it’s disgusting and the way they make it means it isn’t really bread in any meaningful sense. There are plenty of people eating it who could afford better. They do it because their tastes have been ruined by modern food culture.

What is "bread in a meaningful sense"? How pretentious.
Plus how on earth do you know what other people can afford?

PolkaDotPorridge · 03/10/2026 07:25

You are incredibly ungrateful . I hope you didn’t say that to your kind neighbour!?

Gilleep · 03/10/2026 07:26

I make my own bread every day. It’s extremely low effort and taking into account the cost of the flour and the oven costs about £1.50 for a huge loaf.

Simonjt · 03/10/2026 07:26

Have you ever had a food budget of £12 a week? And no, not in the 1950’s!

Childishprodigy · 03/10/2026 06:54

My youngest has a soya allergy and it's the only bread I can get that doesnt have soya in it apart from the expensive bakery bread and like many I'm on a budget. For many it's all they can afford. Be grateful for your kind neighbour.

I have a no knead bread recipe if you’d like, it’s about 5 minutes work and I leave it all say and cook in the evening for 45 minutes. Come out looking like a £3 loaf for 50p

Kind of your neighbour. People have different tastes, like you I choose what I consider decent bread.

Hotels and guest houses should always offer brown/wholemeal bread as an option as part of breakfast.

They always do, in my experience. Fear not.

Annualsouptime · 03/10/2026 07:27

Where I am from it's called toastie bread and only really ever used for toasties. Oooh now I want some toasties! 😁 But I have no self control around them....

Great 5* neigbour!

If wanting real food is pretentious then we have a huge problem. The way it’s made means they don’t actually let it rise using yeast. In my view that makes it not really bread.

What is "real" food?
White bread is food. It's already been explained - several times - why people make that choice.

if they are driving a brand new Mercedes, then they have the money to choose to afford stuff

Mixymaxymoxy · 03/10/2026 07:31

Well it’s not really bread is it? It’s an industrial product manufactured for fast production times, cheapness and for people who don’t ask much from their food in terms of taste or nutrition. It’s engineered to be cheap, to hold together as a sandwich, to toast to the perfect colour. But not much else.

i live in France so am only exposed to these breads when I visit family back home. My mums a Toastie fan 🙄. It’s grim stuff - but hot, toasted, with butter, it hits that magic 50:50 fat:carb ratio that makes human brain tingle.

I have to say though, it’s pretty difficult to get a decent loaf in the UK. Even the whole meal, seeded type loaves are like candy floss. You end up paying like £3-4 for an artisan loaf, which is ridiculous.

AbzMoz · 03/10/2026 07:31

White loaf is ideal for toast when you’re under the weather. It’s also the best for toasties, eggy bread and for with fish and chips (which is the only time I eat bread untoasted). As DH eats more bread than me (and usually buys it), our default is a seeded loaf (usually yellow sticker) in the freezer. If I’ve been to the shops, it can go either way depending on what mood I’m in.

If your question is why has the staple of bread become UPF then the answer is cost, convenience and longevity, and that this suits many people. If your point is your neighbour should have gone to Gail’s for their finest white then stop being ungrateful.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Imagine being "exposed" to these breads! 😷

Ilovemum · 03/10/2026 07:32

I would agree with you, I don't like toastie bread. But I am also concerned by the amount of ingredients and palm oil on lots of bread... We get through 4/5 sourdough loaves a week here- white for the child and seeded/ wholemeal for us..... And for me I love eggy bread and bacon sandwiches on sourdough....

You got it! 😄

Londonrach1 · 03/10/2026 07:32

Because I have IBS and all other breads means I'm very unwell. The only bread that doesn't set me off is the cheap white bread. I miss proper bread but I'm not being I'll eating it. This sourdough craze has really reduced the places I can eat out at. I have a jacket potato for safety now.

geoger · 03/10/2026 07:33

We call it dirty white bread in our house. Always have it with a full English breakfast and is the absolute best for a ham and prawn cocktail crisp sandwich.

Same here, that's why I buy it. It's an absolute pain in restaurants now, isn't it?
