To not buy her a tail, so she can be like her friend who ‘is a therian’

My ten year old has a friend who seems nice and has sane sensible normal parents and yet she wears a tail and tells my daughter she’s a therian. I’m not in any way happy with all the furry rubbish and this feels along the same lines. My daughter has now asked to be a cat for Halloween, then asked for a furry tail as part of her costume, and now I think it’s actually so she can join in with her friend. They are only ten so it’s likely just play but there’s no way I’m letting her go out in a tail 🙄.

‘Therian’ my arse - who is feeding this sort of nonsense to children?
The same people who fed our children and young adults the lie that they could change gender and the world will change for them.
Hidden behind the support for gay rights.

Stonewall was behind it. Since nobody was too bothered any more about gays (their original raison d’etre) they needed a new source of income - so how about brainwashing the nation, and huge organisations/big business, that they needed to shell out hefty sums for Stonewall’s training in all things trans?

Yes, the mermaid crew too, ran by people who were later found to be sexual predators.
The greatest social experiment of the century.
Now they’ve moved into cute animals like it is normal behaviour, flooding social media aimed at ten year olds.

I’m sorry, and in no way am I saying children SHOULD be exposed to kinks or anything inappropriately sexual, but do you really think that any kinks between happy, consenting adults are so awful that they’re exposing children to it to “normalise” it?

We don’t kink shame, thank you.

Maybe we should. Keep your kink private please.

You don’t think it’s weird that a child is being indulged for identifying as a cat?

I think that says more about you than the OP.

Maybe there's some subtlety I'm missing but the majority of what children do as play could be described as strange, but I'm fully aware play is a valuable, self directed activity.
The thing that is most weird to me is why pick on this one thing over all else?

4 year olds pretending to be cats is play. 10 year olds wearing cat ears/tails as everyday wear is not quite the same thing.

Figmentofmyimagination · 27/09/2026 16:52

10 years old feels way too old for this kind of thing. I wonder whether it is some kind of psychological revolt against not having been allowed to play imaginatively when they were younger ie 6 and under because there was so much ‘screen’ stuff etc All v odd.

I am furious reading this. I have a 17 yr old vulnerable daughter. She was bombarded with trans and gender idelogy from the age of ten, as she was a bit of a misfit she was the perfect candidate for this mind altering process.
I am thankful that she finally accepted herself. Some of her friends didn't. They're traumatised, have soured relationships with their parents, insisting on using male names and pronouns. Now they are reaching 18 they're going down the legal route to transition.
The 3 friends have an ASD diagnosis. Surprise, surprise.
I blame the adult, the government, the schools, youth centre's for pushing the agenda on teenagers who have MH issues.
I saw a young girl wearing fury ears and a tail recently, I thought the parents need a bucket of ice cold water dropped on them.

I had the same concerns about my dc. Very gentle, hesitant, not pushy at all - other children could easily have snatched a toy, a snack, etc. with no resistance from dc. So preventively I adopted a very brusque (dh says aggressive) commenting style. When out and seeing thigs which were not proper, decent, I ran a commentary to that effect. On and on, like parrot, to condition my dc. I am so glad I did it, despite rows with dh! So my dc knew from a very young age that white is white and black is black.

This - more than happy to kink shame - search out others into whatever you're into but no-one else needs to know anything about it.

10 year olds aren't too old to play, what a sad attitude.

Natsku · 27/09/2026 17:30

Fine for halloween but I agree with not allowing it elsewhere. A girl in DD's school (used to be DD's friend) got into the therian stuff, her peers found out and she, and anyone who associated with her, were bullied horribly and its completely destroyed her final years of school, she ended up skipping school so much last year that she failed and is repeating the year this year so won't even finish school this year like everyone else her age.

For heaven's sake! How many more times do you need to hear this?

No-one is saying that 10 year olds are too old to play.

What they are concerned about is 10 year olds who are referring to themselves as "therians" and how they have been exposed to this term, and what their understanding is of the term.

Scarlettpixie · 27/09/2026 17:39

At 10 they just like dressing up. My son had a tail around 8 or 9. Bought it at camp bestival after seeing loads of people wearing them. It was an animal/wildlife themed year. He already had a tiger onesie and this completed the look along with tiger face paint! I don't think her friend is a furry if she only has a tail. It is very much an adult community and the constumes cost a fortune. My friends daugher is into it.

Sure, because the Daily Mail told you schools are having to provide litter trays 😆

That is not what I said. However 4 year old play and 10 year old play is not the same thing

I don’t think anyone should engage with Maggi. I think s/he is either deliberately on the wind up, or should come with a red flag warning.

10 year olds and older still do lots of imaginative play when they're allowed to and not shamed out of it by adults trying to sexualise them. Let them be children.

laurini · 27/09/2026 17:52

Isn't this just being a kid? I feel like you're overthinking it!

Absolutely YANBU OP! I’m all for letting kids explore (my parents let me be myself) but this furry stuff is bizarre with roots in fetishism, and associations with adult stuff - too much risk of exploitation. It’s hardly ballet or violin playing is it. And we all dressed up and had face painting - this is not the same thing. Absolutely set that boundary OP. Ignore the bleeding hearts who want this kind of crap made normal.

OP specifically said therian was mentioned. Doesn’t sound like normal dress up as we know it, and as you wonderfully describe in your post (which sounds fun).
