To not buy her a tail, so she can be like her friend who ‘is a therian’

My ten year old has a friend who seems nice and has sane sensible normal parents and yet she wears a tail and tells my daughter she’s a therian. I’m not in any way happy with all the furry rubbish and this feels along the same lines. My daughter has now asked to be a cat for Halloween, then asked for a furry tail as part of her costume, and now I think it’s actually so she can join in with her friend. They are only ten so it’s likely just play but there’s no way I’m letting her go out in a tail 🙄.

Furry culture is driven by adults, with adult kinks. Weird boundaries.
At the extreme end, you have people (mostly men) sexually abusing and torturing animals, to death, because of these blurred boundaries. Proudly calling themselves zoophiles. They believe that it's cruel and abusive to the animal to NOT have sex with your pets. Sexual abuse of minors and sharing CSA images not uncommon amongst the "community".

Fascinating but not really relevant to kids dressing up.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/09/2026 12:47

‘Therian’ my arse - who is feeding this sort of nonsense to children?

I’d tell her very firmly that it’s fancy dress, only to be worn for Halloween or fancy dress parties/any school dress-up days.

And no arguments would be tolerated!

But it is imaginary and it is an adult view that is colouring this

we don’t stop children wearing nappies because of the perverts on the world

No but there’s a world of difference between babies and toddlers wearing nappies and much older children whose are getting to the age where they could be exposed to more than they understand online.

My daughter wears tails. She's 12 and has done since the age of 9 or 10. They clip to the side of her jeans or she clips them at the back. I will not force her into some toffee-nosed ideals, so she can end up like the basic-in-beige brigade. I want her to have freedom of indepdence and creativity. I doubt I would allow my child near anyone like you, because you sound toxic/a bully. This is how other children end up bullying - Starts with their parents who go on the attack when they don't understand something.

They are literally kids playing at dressup, but present day has given it a new 'technical term'. Did you never pretend to be an animal, as a child!?

My daughter has a massive friend group and they all collect tails, or various kids quirks. She even takes commissions for animal drawings she does, because I've encouraged her to express herself and that has led to a world of encouragement and learning her skillset...she's now making a bit of money from it.

So, you can either stop repressing the women of this world; or you can encourage your daughter to be herself, instead of squashing her inside your own convenient, basic and bland box.

Don't be a snowflake.

Where is she getting these commissions from?

Look up school girls or school uniform online and you could find allsorts. Shall we stop girls going to school?

The same people who fed our children and young adults the lie that they could change gender and the world will change for them.
Hidden behind the support for gay rights.

I always wonder if they remade “about a boy” this is what the mother would advocate the son to do… although now it wouldn’t be “we’re not sheep..” it would be “We ARE sheep!! And if people don’t acknowledge this and agree, CANCEL THEM!!”

Epstein was considered elite and successful. Or do you believe there is no truth in the massive sex trafficking problem world wide paid for by the elite.
pretty elite.
A New York federal judge granted final approval to Bank of America's 72.5 million settlement on August 27, 2026, resolving claims that the financial institution enabled Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking operations.

'There's playing. This type of play would be a young age. Not 10.'

Sorry @Yellowcakestand I don't really agree with this - I used to play pretend games when I was 10/11, I think I grew out of it about 12. None of the therian stuff was around back then but I still enjoyed pretending to be animals etc and and had friends who did too. 10/11 year olds can still have very active imaginations.

I'm now a perfectly functioning adult, but then all of the furry/ therian stuff wasn't around for me.

It just muddies things that there is now all of this, and I agree you do need to be very careful of these sub cultures.

It's when it crosses the line from fantasy/ play into reality and children need to understand they are not actually animals (and most do).

I think that litter trays etc are clearly silly and I wouldn't indulge that, but I would absolutely let my kid wear a tail at a halloween party if they were otherwise a sensible, normal child.

You just have to judge it by the individual child I think. You can let them play whilst reiterating to them that it is just play and making sure they know that.

I think I agree about 10 not being too old for imaginary play.

We tend to force adulthood on children these days - not least by turning play into sexual fetish. If I think back to being 10, I really had very little interest in sex, hardly thought about it except some giggling on a few occasions over the Where Did I Come From book, which was at my friend's house anyway. The rest of the time we played like children. We even dressed more like children than 10 year olds today.

I think it is one of the really sad aspects of modern life that children are exposed to so much so young that stops them being children. And to think so much work was done to get children out of workhouses and into school so they could have a childhood.

10 year olds are supposed to be interested in tiktok and skincare these days, not playing.
My daughters are 13, 10 and 9 and all still play with playmobil together and love stuffed animals and dressing up.
I find it so sad that adults want to sexualise actual child's play, whereas behaving like young adults is now deemed age appropriate.

If by "a new technical term" for dressing up and pretend play you are referring to "therian" then I think you need to look up what "therian" means.

And are your 12 year old daughter and her tail wearing friends actually playing at "dressup" and "pretending to be an animal"? At their age, I assume they are in high school now?

Or do they just think tails are edgy or cool?

I grasp the moral panic, women conflating adult sexual fetishes with children's play because they're somehow scared of trans people.

@Leafstamp take a wild guess at what I think of your reply.

Fortunately, when these threads appear outside FWR, it's increasingly the case that the responses are much more balanced and sensible.

Of course there's still the hardcore of anti trans/anti non-binary/whatever people trying to pretend that a 10 year old wanting a cat costume is part of a global anti-women conspiracy, but their numbers are becoming fewer. The obvious overlap with the hard right doesn't help.

“No, we don’t do things like that in this house darling, We don’t tell lies and we don’t pretend to be something we are not, Now, toast or cereal.? Or do you want eggs?”

If I spoke to my daughter like that, she's ask me if she had suddenly woken up in a cult. "We don't do things like this in this house."??? Do you actually speak to your children like this, implying that because you are generous enough to put a roof over their head you can dictate every aspect of their behaviour? So strange and creepy.

I prefer to talk to my daughter like she is a sentient being capable of reason. If I don't want her to do something, I therefore explain why I think it's a bad idea.

OP, there is nothing remotely abnormal about your child wanting a Halloween costume. Cats are a pretty standard choice for Halloween.

If your daughter says she wants to dress up as a cat full time that's an entirely different issue, and obviously that would not be a good idea and if she genuinely can't grasp why (surprising if a 10 year old can't) you need to explain to her, obviously. But as far as I can tell from your OP, she hasn't mentioned this even once. She just asked for a Halloween outfit, and for some reason you are getting your knickers in a twist about a 10 year old asking for a perfectly normal qbe age appropriate thing.

And if you don't buy her one, she can go to Poundland and get one for £2 or something.

Seriously, this thread is batshit - I can't understand how any of this is a problem.....

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/09/2026 12:16

Oh wow.

various kids quirks. She kinks or quirks?

Unfortunately the education system has been broken down pushing left wing agendas to the point of brain washing the young people.
It’s been going on 20 years and here is the results. The bleeding heart woke brigade.

There is nothing unique or original about watching a child being brain washed into behaving a certain way, in this case like an animal.

If you research this, there is a lot of deep dark paedophile connections. The lgbt+ community has a paedophile group who attached themselves to the movement. It is an insult to the gay community, like religious movements, you attract the child abusers.

My own beautiful daughter is one of these naively assuming the bad things in society are good. We don’t discuss lgbtq+, politics or mass immigration as she lives in a rainbow world.

This is scary stuff - how old is the daughter you refuse to discuss politics with? Will you at any point allow her an education, or do you intend to restrict her access to the world she lives in for as long as you can?

I don’t know what you are talking about. We don’t discuss the issues as we on opposite sides of the fence. We don’t allow our separate views spoil our relationship.
She is pro everything, inclusive, leftist views, trans rights, furry positivity, pro mass immigration, pro Palestine activists, her school has no gender bathrooms and rainbow flags everywhere.
A lot of my views would be centre /left, excluding children who are convinced they’re in the wrong body and mass immigration.
She believes that you can change gender and that every refugee is coming to help and be a law abiding citizen in her country. I don’t.
