To not buy her a tail, so she can be like her friend who ‘is a therian’

My ten year old has a friend who seems nice and has sane sensible normal parents and yet she wears a tail and tells my daughter she’s a therian. I’m not in any way happy with all the furry rubbish and this feels along the same lines. My daughter has now asked to be a cat for Halloween, then asked for a furry tail as part of her costume, and now I think it’s actually so she can join in with her friend. They are only ten so it’s likely just play but there’s no way I’m letting her go out in a tail 🙄.

This

I just looked it up because I am confused with therian vs furry and from what I read therian is more involuntary feeling of being another animal (like being born girl but feeling in the the wrong body and identifying as boy so therian is like that - feeling like you actually on the inside identify with another animal).
and furry is pretending to be another animal.
this might not be fully correct I’ve just learnt this but that is my understanding of it

Encouraging your child to conform with the latest fad in order to fit in isn’t encouraging independence and creativity. If there are a large number of 12 year olds in a single school wearing tails and pretending to be animals then this isn’t self-expression. It’s no different to the 90s when all the girls walked around with Take That merch and inflatable handbags or the 2000s when they switched to ultra low slung jeans, butterfly g-strings poking out the waistband, jelly bracelets all up their arms.

Yet the parents cannot see this. They think they are being 'creative' 🙄

It's encouraging mental illness rather than curiosity to explore why a young person feels they are in the 'wrong body'....

omghereistrouble · 27/09/2026 12:06

not being popular in this but that friend who wears the tail, at her age its a wonder she does not get teased over it at school. lots of children of that age are looking at getting ready for senior school plus how they grow so quick, a lot of girls are more into pop groups, make up, fashion etc

I am furious reading this. I have a 17 yr old vulnerable daughter. She was bombarded with trans and gender idelogy from the age of ten, as she was a bit of a misfit she was the perfect candidate for this mind altering process.
I am thankful that she finally accepted herself. Some of her friends didn't. They're traumatised, have soured relationships with their parents, insisting on using male names and pronouns. Now they are reaching 18 they're going down the legal route to transition.
The 3 friends have an ASD diagnosis. Surprise, surprise.
I blame the adult, the government, the schools, youth centre's for pushing the agenda on teenagers who have MH issues.
I saw a young girl wearing fury ears and a tail recently, I thought the parents need a bucket of ice cold water dropped on them.

It's bloody sad. It's abuse of vulnerable young people in plain sight (some with misguided parents playing along), but not recognised as such yet.

Wrecking their bodies, mental health in shreds but there is the 'we must affirm' and cater fir their brigade, bloody abuse it is.

At ten I don’t think it’s an issue - imagination can be huge. I am sure I was a fairy, a princess, astronaut , a hobbit, an alien and definitely NOT my parents child - an orphan or a kidnapped victim at various times

This is a very flippant and unhelpful post about an extremely serious issue.

Encouraging children to alienate their loving family does happen in the crazy world where people think that a child can be “born in the wrong body”.

OP, your instinct is right about “therian” - and so is the poster saying it’s often a thin end of the wedge.

I think 'loving' families are alienating their children by freaking out about 10 year olds wanting to dress up as a cat 😂

My daughter wears tails. She's 12 and has done since the age of 9 or 10. They clip to the side of her jeans or she clips them at the back. I will not force her into some toffee-nosed ideals, so she can end up like the basic-in-beige brigade. I want her to have freedom of indepdence and creativity. I doubt I would allow my child near anyone like you, because you sound toxic/a bully. This is how other children end up bullying - Starts with their parents who go on the attack when they don't understand something.

They are literally kids playing at dressup, but present day has given it a new 'technical term'. Did you never pretend to be an animal, as a child!?

My daughter has a massive friend group and they all collect tails, or various kids quirks. She even takes commissions for animal drawings she does, because I've encouraged her to express herself and that has led to a world of encouragement and learning her skillset...she's now making a bit of money from it.

So, you can either stop repressing the women of this world; or you can encourage your daughter to be herself, instead of squashing her inside your own convenient, basic and bland box.

Don't be a snowflake.

Funny how the moral panickers were worried about children being outcast and bullied for dressing up... oh but if your child has friends she's just blindly following the herd.

We can't have it both ways 🤔Do kids need to be protected from being different, or being the same?

Oh wow.

various kids quirks. She kinks or quirks?

Unfortunately the education system has been broken down pushing left wing agendas to the point of brain washing the young people.
It’s been going on 20 years and here is the results. The bleeding heart woke brigade.

There is nothing unique or original about watching a child being brain washed into behaving a certain way, in this case like an animal.

If you research this, there is a lot of deep dark paedophile connections. The lgbt+ community has a paedophile group who attached themselves to the movement. It is an insult to the gay community, like religious movements, you attract the child abusers.

My own beautiful daughter is one of these naively assuming the bad things in society are good. We don’t discuss lgbtq+, politics or mass immigration as she lives in a rainbow world.

When I was a child - younger than 10 though, probably around 6/7/8 we regularly used to pretend we were horses in the school playground and galloped around jumping over things and making neighing noises. I have not grown up to be a deviant or a weirdo and as far as I know neither have any of my school friends.

Sadly it seems lots of adult women now would accuse you of having a sexual fetish.

That is really disgusting that you would describe a child's quirks as 'kinks' 😱
What is wrong with you?? You're making sexual comments about literal children.
This is supposed to be a parenting site and people are writing sexualised fantasies about young girls' playing.

Well, I believe parents like yourself should have their children taken from them. You are blaming everyone for your child's independent decision. You don't like something, don't understand it, probably found it difficult to educate yourself, and are now lashing out at everyone instead of challenging your struggles with understanding.

I’d say the same about you allowing your child enter the furry world blindly. It’s sick.

Wants to jump off a cliff = say no.
Wants to dress up as a cat = if you freak out and tell your child they're a sexual deviant, then yes you will alienate them!

Society has pushed this kink onto children. It started after the furry community joined the lgbt+ movement. It is based around kink whether you like it or not.
The elite made children sexual objects. The same people who sold the PDF magazine in the 80’s.
It is the new access route, not the children’s fault but adults should know better.

No, you are pushing a sexual kink on children and it's really bizarre and sick.
Kids dressing up and playing animals would have no idea of anything sexual except for weirdo adults like you sexualising them.
Do you berate school girls in uniform because it features in porn too?

This 💯

Many don't see the abusers and think those wearing their fetish wear at pride is being inclusive. Many are completely blind to safeguarding risks.

Feel free to read up on the mermaids controversy.

The issue raised by the OP is not whether 10 year old children should still be engaging in imaginative play. Of course there is nothing wrong with pretending to be a spaceman or a robot or a horse or a dog or a doctor or a princess or a cat.

Imaginative play, per se, isn't the OP's concern.

There is allowing your child creative and developmental freedom and then there is accepting an unhealthy fixation which is based on unhealthy doctrine that you can ‘be’ anything you like simply by saying it is so. It is not so, it is pure fantasy backed up now by the Supreme Court.

In the old days if you wanted to be a bit different you’d dress like a goth or wear ‘alternative’ clothes or dye your hair. Now tiktok and silly parents persuade children that it’s perfectly ok to wear a tail at 12. At age 6 when dress up is age appropriate? Sure. On stage playing a role by an out-there artist like goldfrapp? Sure. Age 12, in a group where they are all wearing tails in a climate where kids are identifying as all sorts of crazy crap? absolutely not.

your job as a parent is to hold appropriate boundaries.

You know they don't literally think they're animals and all that stuff about litter trays and dog bowls at school was internet bullshit, right? 🤔

KayFabe · 27/09/2026 12:43

Furry culture is driven by adults, with adult kinks. Weird boundaries.
At the extreme end, you have people (mostly men) sexually abusing and torturing animals, to death, because of these blurred boundaries. Proudly calling themselves zoophiles. They believe that it's cruel and abusive to the animal to NOT have sex with your pets. Sexual abuse of minors and sharing CSA images not uncommon amongst the "community".

But it is imaginary and it is an adult view that is colouring this

we don’t stop children wearing nappies because of the perverts on the world
