Dh angry I don't sweep up the leaves every day

I don't give a crap about the leaves in the front and back garden, yes it looks lovely when all tidy but I have enough to do.
I work part time, very part time, but I do everything else, all in the house, food shop, cooking, washing, care of Dc, school runs, school meetings, bill payments, dog walks, vets, picking up dog poo, everything.
Literally the only thing I cannot be arsed doing is sweeping up all the leaves every day. I've never said it needs to be done and have never done it as don't care either way.
Dh always sweeps and sorts garden, great, it looks nice, but no one says he has to.
Second time tonight after work that he was storming around angrily, muttering under his breath about having to be the one who always does it, slamming around angrily.
The last time he made a comment, I told him outright that i'm not doing it on top of doing every other single thing in the house and with Dc.

It's because I only work a few hours.

Aibu or is he?

He finishes work at 4.30, can get home for 15 minutes later, doesn't have to do anything else, I make the dinner, nothing else is
needed to be done

So the only chore he does the entire year is picking up leaves for a few weeks in autumn? Tell him to stop being so bloody lazy.

Puts in a binbag and throws them

What, into the landfill? Tell him to fuck off and be more ecologically conscious.

Morepositivemum · 10/09/2026 22:48

Tell him you want to jump in them and run around happily after they’ve built up, and he’s ruining your fun!!

MsSmartShoes · 10/09/2026 22:56

He sounds like a petulant manchild. Only anal losers get worked up about leaves.

Mischance · 10/09/2026 22:59

Leaves are for children to roll about in, bury themselves in and throw around.

Hoardasurass · 10/09/2026 23:00

@Whyhavethestreetlightsgoneoff isn't it kind of your dh to let you know that he wants a leaf blower for Christmas

AInightingale · 10/09/2026 23:00

What does he actually do or contribute to the running of the household, apart from shovelling up a few stupid leaves once a year?

(Past experience of this kind of thing and very familiar with self-righteous huffing and puffing and martyred sighs.) I am quite wary of men like this.

This is the thing, it's artificial grass (looks fairly realistic though) not our choice, but live in a hot place and the grass sadly couldn't survive.
He is very untidy with other things and i'm the one forever picking up clothes and things left by him and Dc, i'll be f*** if i'm doing the garden too

Does he allow you to speak to him that way about the mess he leaves (no pun intended) behind him. Are you allowed to blow your top at him for adding lots of extra work onto your day or is it a one way street? My tolerance for men throwing their weight about whilst women not allowed to say anything to him about anything is at an all time low.
So if you speak to him that way then it works both ways. If he just is whacking you into submission then tell him to get lost.

I think I might go into the garden at 4.47 to sweep up the leaves, telling him it is his turn to make dinner, whilst looking after the dc, as I didn't have chance to sweep them earlier and it is clearly important to him so that seems like a good way to manage it.

Friendlygingercat · 10/09/2026 23:16

Falling leaves is a natural process so get your DH to complain to god.

My leaves get swept up once a month when the gardener comes.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 10/09/2026 23:20

Hilarious responses. MN never fails.
On a serious level, who does he think he is storming in angrily. He needs to run the house as you for a week minimum or shut up and get on with his sweeping brush.

Whyhavethestreetlightsgoneoff · 10/09/2026 21:00

Crazy isn't it

The garden does get messy as we have a huge tree and leaves everywhere, but seriously?

Cut the tree down, end of leaves, end of problem.

Seriously, either he does it. Or he doesn't moan. End of.
No ones asking him to do it so he can't expect you to do it.

I see your bough and I raise my too mulch hassle. ( but you still won the Internet) Cake

Definitely unreasonable attitude. You live with him and share your lives and living space. You have to pull your weight with chores and sorting the leaves 50/50 is fair. But every day is taking the piss. I'd offer to do it once a week. And ask him to regulate his emotions better because slamming things and being aggressive is an act of intimidation and it's not acceptable.

Have you read the OP? He doesn't do anything else! It's about 99.5/0.5, not 50/50 anything. I'd be bloody delighted if my partner did all the cleaning, admin, washing, school runs and pet care and all I had to do was shovel up a few leaves between September and November. (I quite like raking up leaves tbh.)

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/09/2026 23:39

Very easy solution.

  1. You sweep the leaves
  2. He gets home and is all happy that the lawn looks clear
  3. He asks what is for dinner
  4. You say there is nothing for dinner as you didnt have time because you were clearing the leaves.
  5. If you are feeling petty, repeat every day with laundry (hide his clean pants and socks), tidying the house (I know it bugs you but is a sacrifice worth making), kids toys away etc
echt · 11/09/2026 00:06

So he has one domestic job - tidying the garden, and now he wants you to do it?

Twat.
