To think fat women look better in bikinis than one pieces

Before anyone jumps on me, of course people can wear what they want and feel most comfortable in...

But ive just returned from holiday and I did think whilst lying on the beach and round the pool how much better larger women look in bikini rather than one piece costumes. I think maybe it's just a confidence thing and those who exude confidence rather than self consciousness look better overall.

But regardless of that, I just think visually they actually look better...not that anyone owes attractiveness to others obviously

I swim a lot.

i swim outdoors in rivers and lakes and the sea through the winter.

i have been swimming in most types of swim wear and in nothing and in some stuff that really wasn’t designed as swimwear.

my personal opinion:

swimming naked is best done on your own or with friends ( and if anyone does want to try it there’s a fundraising great skinny dip coming up soon
https://slowswimming.org/geskinny)

if you are going to swim outdoors water shoes of some description are a good idea because stones can be bloody sharp

and beyond that I really don’t give a fuck.

i personally find wetsuits a bugger to swim in but lots of people seem to like them.

a mate of mine does swim in a bikini all year round but she’s well hard (was brought up in Canada and is used to seriously cold temperatures!)

mixandmatch · 31/08/2026 12:59

I agree OP. I am medium sized, neither thin nor fat and definitely look better in a bikini. I think a bikini gives most women, regardless of size, a more defined shape than a one-piece.

Bikinis are also more comfortable. Particularly this year in the boiling heat. Took a one-piece on holiday too and barely wore it. It felt too constricting.

Queenncat · 31/08/2026 13:05

Genuine confidence with a glowing tan (on paler skin) cover a multitude of sins afaic, that's for sure.

zurigo · 31/08/2026 13:06

People should wear what they want and feel confident in. It's none of any else's business! But I prefer a bikini. There is nothing worse than struggling out of a wet swimsuit to take a pee and then having to try and get it back on again! I'm 52 and personally IDGAF whether other people think I look good or not.

Bunnycat101 · 31/08/2026 13:07

I just see bikinis as a burn risk now- I honestly don’t think I’ll ever wear one again regardless of size. I can’t be arsed with re-applying cream as regularly and like spending hours in the water on holiday. Might be different if I was more of a sunbather.

My go to is a short sleeved one piece or a rash vest. I don’t think those are particularly hot or onerous so I don’t get the one piece being restrictive over two.

Chenecinquantecinq · 31/08/2026 13:07

Yes bikinis are way more flattering most shapes except super skinny look best in a bikini not many can wear a one piece and have it suit them.

BleedinglyObvious · 31/08/2026 13:08

Do fat men look better in budgie smugglers @Justaquestionplease ?

Iheartmysmart · 31/08/2026 13:09

A one piece looks awful on me. I’m short, a bit overweight and very large of nork so if it fits round the boobs, there are acres of unneeded fabric elsewhere. I usually go with a proper bra sized top and high waisted bottoms with a fold over waistband.

Hertinot · 31/08/2026 13:12

I don't think it's about size, I think it's about shape. I am a size 16 apple shape with 36dd breasts, a long torso and short legs I look much better in a one piece with a halter neck tie , with detail down the sides to give the illusion of a waist. If I wear a bikini I have no waist and I look like a sausage, straight up and down.

There are some much bigger ladies than I am who can very much pull off a bikini because they are a different shape.

fizzywidget · 31/08/2026 13:12

Some thoughts are best just left in your head, no need to share.

Mary28 · 31/08/2026 13:13

This seems like a weird comment. Surely the same could be said for skinny or any other shaped person? They look better if they exude confidence?

FookFookFook · 31/08/2026 13:14

I don't think the OP meant this in a mean or judgy way as some people are implying?

I think one piece swimming costumes seem more practical and functional for actual swimming whereas a bikini seems more holiday vibe and fun. I think for that reason they seem younger and maybe more flattering than a cossie which can be a bit aging?

zigazigaaaing · 31/08/2026 13:16

I couldn’t agree more, I think alot of one pieces look frumpy and you’re better off wearing a bikini with confidence

AbigailsKaftan · 31/08/2026 13:16

I agree with you OP. I’m currently on holiday and I agree that bikinis can look good on all shapes, sizes and ages. Sorry to say this, but the ladies wearing swimsuits, look ( prepares to be slated), mumsy 😬. Plus, it’s so hot here, that you would roast in a swimsuit.
I think the style makes all the difference. Us post penopausal women probably look better in knickers that cover more. Cheese graters are for the young!
Plain looks better than patterned - big flowers are a no-no. String bikini tops look good on the whole, but aren't very supportive.
Lots of kaftans this year (yay!). Not so many Co-ords. Crochet slim fit, long dresses are still popular.
The Muslim ladies who are wearing swim trousers and long sleeved tops are very glam! Lots of bling!

Edit. Swim dresses. No! Just, no!

aintnothinbutagstring · 31/08/2026 13:20

Possibly you are right - more likely to find a two piece which has a proper supportive bra than a one piece thats trying to do everything. I like short bottoms as I find they flatter most figures. You can always do creative cover ups with sarongs if conscious of stomach.

Justaquestionplease · 31/08/2026 12:01

Well what I'm saying is the opposite isnt it...you would have probably felt way more self conscious in a bikini, but actually I think not giving a fuck looks better than trying to conceal yourself

I think not giving a fuck looks better than trying to conceal yourself

You're weirdly assuming that one-pieces are some compromise that people wear to conceal themselves rather than, you know, perfectly normal swimwear. I've not worn a bikini since I was 6. Some women like them, others not so much.

Your opinion seems based on some misperception that wearing less is better and somehow shows you're 'not giving a fuck' in some empowered way. If that was the case, you'd wear a boob tube and hotpants by default rather than trousers and a normal top, but it's not the case and it's not about concealment, it's clothes and people wear what they're comfortable in, not what you like to look at.

OtterlyAstounding · 31/08/2026 13:24

I think everyone looks best in a rashvest because skin cancer isn't sexy.

I agree that confidence is attractive, OP, but also that no one should feel the expectation to be ornamental.

You're wrong if you assume that someone who doesn't wear a bikini isn't confident, though. Plenty of women are confident and comfortable in their bodies, but don't want to expose them to that degree, for a variety of reasons. And plenty of women wear bikinis, but feel self-conscious and lack confidence.

To be fair I think the op does have a point. A lot of overweight women wear swimsuits with panels to hold them in, giving a bit of a stuffed sausage look, or with skirts on, which quite frankly scream I’m trying to hide my body, or in black or navy, to try to look slimmer, so not looking like you’re trying to conceal yourself is often better but if concealing youself makes you feel better, then crack on. Just I’m not sure it always looks that good in reality,

however simply disagree that it’s all larger ladies should wear bikinis, I think it’s about wearing a costume you like, that’s flattering and comfortable for your shape and size,

Iwilladmit · 31/08/2026 13:30

I’m a chubster and I look great whatever I wear.

but thanks for your thoughts OP.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 31/08/2026 13:32

It's funny how we can stand on a beach admiring the ripples and dimples in the sand and water then tear them to shreds when those same natural features show on our bodies.

Wear what you feel comfortable in, I'd bet on the vast majority of us not having any negative thoughts about anyone in their swimwear.

Superhansrantowindsor · 31/08/2026 13:32

How can you generalise? Some women look better in a bikini, others s one piece, regardless of size age etc. And who is really to decide what ‘looks better’

AnnaQuayRules · 31/08/2026 13:34

I'm not overweight but I definitely don't look good in a one piece as my bust is large so I need a size12 top, but my waist and bum are a size 8 and anything bigger falls off. A costume that fits my top half is far too loose on my bottom half.

Having said that, there's no way I'd wear a bikini in public. Tankinis all the way!

Okay well I guess you and OP have a point if the discussion is about slagging fat women off for looking like stuffed sausages and so on. I guess I'll exit as I think that sucks and from my pov, the point stands that people wear what they're comfortable in and that's what matters, not this level of judgement which seems to go completely against the OP's apparent wish for women to not give a fuck.

queenceleste · 31/08/2026 13:34

How comforting to think of you judging other women’s bodies…. Makes some of us never want to go swimming.

Witchergeralt · 31/08/2026 13:36

I have fragile skin so I need to wear swim trousers and a rash top, I can assure you I look like Michelin man but at least I'm not wearing a bikini. 😂🤢
