To think fat women look better in bikinis than one pieces

Before anyone jumps on me, of course people can wear what they want and feel most comfortable in...

But ive just returned from holiday and I did think whilst lying on the beach and round the pool how much better larger women look in bikini rather than one piece costumes. I think maybe it's just a confidence thing and those who exude confidence rather than self consciousness look better overall.

But regardless of that, I just think visually they actually look better...not that anyone owes attractiveness to others obviously

I’m finding it curious as well. The only difference between a swimsuit and a bikini is the tummy is exposed. The op seems determined to believe that if larger women expose their stomachs they look better. And will be more confident. It just feels such an odd hill to die on.

Why are you sexualising a bikini? It's just clothing. This is such a weird, mainly British hang up...that bikinis are sexual ergo you must be physically attractive to wear one

I'm a fat woman and wear bikinis.

Good supportive underwire lifts and separates my ample boobs rather than squishing them as a one piece tends to do.

High waisted briefs cover my wobbly bits and stretch marks, leaving only a couple of inches of rib cage visible.

And it’s so much easier to put on and take off, especially when wet and you need the loo! Bikinis all day long, I don’t care if anyone else would prefer I cover up.

There was nothing sexual about that. The word knickers is not sexual. It’s really odd you took that stance, in fact it’s really odd you sat watching fat women and decided they’d look better if their tummies were exposed.

I actually walked through a beach car park in mine this summer looking for the ice cream shop! I was conscious of the fact I was in fact wandering around in something resembling undies, but I didn’t get any comments or honks from judgey motorists, and it was actually quite a liberating feeling to be out in the world without feeling the need to hide myself away.

I won't wear a one piece on holiday. Its far too warm. I wear my flab not with pride as I'd love to be slimmer but a dgaf attitude. You need good coverage so nothing skimpy.

Swim skirt FYI incase anyone is wondering wtf is a swim skirt. Its got swimming bottoms like knickers underneath (like a skort).

I love that it covers the bikini line. Im way more conscious of showing my fanny (or even the tip top of my thigh/groin) than a bit of tummy!

Also, don't anyone mention the 6" caesarian scars, sure they look great in a bikini! (As well as the scar "overhang" ifkyk).

I'm not British, I can assure you my knickers are not sexual, and my dislike of a bikini has nothing to do with my physical attractiveness.

I just don't like being in a state of what feels like undress. If I wouldn't feel comfortable in it at the grocery shop, why would I feel comfortable in it at the beach? (Answer: I don't). I just like being more covered in front of strangers. I also like not being leched at (a bonus). Besides, I'd burn to a crisp.

Do you think there's something innately superior about a bikini? I don't understand why you're presenting it as some kind of character flaw to not want to wear one?

Sadly fat people tend not to look very nice in swimsuits or bikinis, unfortunately. I think a nicely tailored dress is usually most flattering, though not for the beach obviously…

How about a nice kaftan so that you’re not subjected to any of those terrible fat ladies showing their bodies? FFS I would look shit in a “nicely tailored dress”. I’m short and fat and rock a pair of jeans and a cute top with the best of them, but soemthing tailored to fit around my ample curves would look ridiculous

Bikinis and tankinis are so much more practical than a 1 piece when you need a wee - I hate sliding a wet swimming cossie down & back up again.

This would be my response. YABU for considering it enough to write this post. It seems to assume that ‘fat’ women are choosing to wear full swimsuits in the mistaken assumption that they’re more ‘flattering’, because that’s how all women make their clothing choices. I would be considered fat by some people I’m sure and I’ve worn a full swimsuit for most of my life because it’s much more comfortable and I feel much more comfortable myself wearing it, and more able to do the activities I want to.

I think age is a factor too. A curvy but smooth stomach is not the same as a saggy wrinkly one!

Fwiw I think a tankini is the worst of all worlds. Even the slimmest women seem to get a roll of fat between the two pieces.

That’s great that you’ve realised that for yourself, but I wouldn’t assume that most other women wearing swimsuits were actually wishing they could wear a bikini but didn’t think they had toned enough bodies. Do you look at women wearing long skirts and assume they wish they were in mini skirts if they only had good enough legs?

I’m in my late 40’s, size 8 , menopausal , I’m only 5”1 . A one piece and I’ve tried many ! Makes me look pregnant , they always did even before kids and I was a runner and had abs then.
I wear a bikini and feel fine , but others of all different shapes and sizes look amazing in what they are comfortable in . The only women I have ever really taken notice of on a beach was in her 70’s wearing a Brazilian cut bikini , topless and was strolling up the beach like a queen , she oozed confidence . This was many years ago and I remember at the time thinking “ I wish I had an ounce of her self worth and confidence “

No, women shouldn’t feel like they should have to hide their perfectly natural bodies, but they also shouldn't feel like they have to expose them either. There isn't some kind of moral superiority in showing your stomach.

I'm old, I beach it a lot, and always wear bikinis. I've been a size 10 and a size 20 and am probably a 16 now. I hate myself in a swimming costume, I feel like a round beach ball. I have a brown stomach so show it! However, bikini top has to be underwired, bottoms have to be high legged and high waisted. I would look grotesque in those swimming shorts or whatever that bigger people try and hide their bodies with.
Oh, and where I go there's some topless, I take my top off at the waters edge, it's so freeing and cool to swim topless. I don't frolic around at the waters edge however and put my top back on when I get out! I just try and have body confidence and not hide, that's all.

It isn't about coverage or lack of, it is about fit and support when it matters the most.

There isn't one homogenous way of being larger. If you can fit the top and bottom separately, you easily get better results, than stretching one piece in a somehow compromise size.
Whether the stomach between the pieces is flat, larger or 7 months pregnant, it doesn't really matter, when the important parts fits.

But what if the one piece does fit well, and is comfortable and supportive, for instance?
