To think fat women look better in bikinis than one pieces

Before anyone jumps on me, of course people can wear what they want and feel most comfortable in...

But ive just returned from holiday and I did think whilst lying on the beach and round the pool how much better larger women look in bikini rather than one piece costumes. I think maybe it's just a confidence thing and those who exude confidence rather than self consciousness look better overall.

But regardless of that, I just think visually they actually look better...not that anyone owes attractiveness to others obviously

I'm a size 8, aged 57 and weigh 8.5 stone.

My flabby menopausal stomach looks much better in a one piece.

If it didn't, I'd be walking round town wearing cropped tops...

bababamama · 31/08/2026 12:03

I’m bigger and prefer bikinis because the tops fit better, I have control bottoms, nothing skimpy. I wear a rash vest over in the uk generally for warmth

Fwiw I'm woman and I've been every size from an 8-20. My post is more about fashion than body shaming. In fact it's the opposite

But you didn't ask which was more fashionable?

StabiaGirl · 31/08/2026 12:03

In other news, my cellulite looks great on display in a thong bikini.

Ladyleisure · 31/08/2026 12:04

I’m a size 16/18 and of a certain age and I don’t give a fuck what people think I would look better wearing. If they don’t like what they see that’s their problem.

Justaquestionplease · 31/08/2026 12:04

I also think this is quite a British thing...I think European women are more likely to wear a bikini regardless of their size

I think everyone looks better in a one piece to be honest.

Agree

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 31/08/2026 12:07

Justaquestionplease · 31/08/2026 12:01

Well what I'm saying is the opposite isnt it...you would have probably felt way more self conscious in a bikini, but actually I think not giving a fuck looks better than trying to conceal yourself

but actually I think not giving a fuck looks better than trying to conceal yourself

This doesn't make any sense.

There are some beautiful one piece swimsuits which people wear because they love them, not because they're 'trying to conceal themselves'.

And rolls of fat will look exactly the same on the stomach of someone who doesn't give a fuck, as they do on someone who does.

So as you're talking about how women look to others, your logic is flawed.

RaraRachael · 31/08/2026 12:08

I've got fat around my belly that I just can't shift.
I wouldn't be seen dead in a bikini.

ClawsandEffect · 31/08/2026 12:11

I think the idea of a swimsuit as a corset to hold the fat in is a horrible one. Surely swimming and lounging around in the sun, with a drink and a book is meant to be a form of relaxation? Hard to be relaxed encased in tight lycra. I would never wear a bathing costume of that type.

I think anyone of any size looks no better or worse in a bikini or swimsuit. I don't wear bikinis because I don't want to be pulling them up or down and also because most women of my age don't wear them, and I don't want to stand out. But as for whether I'd look better or worse in one compared to a one piece? No difference I'd say. And I'm chunky.

MxCactus · 31/08/2026 12:12

Im postpartum atm but even when I was skinny I looked bad in a one piece. I'm short but I have long legs and a really short torso so I think maybe that's why?

Either way, I have loose skin on my tummy now, and I'm bigger, yet I still look better in a bikini than a swimsuit. I want to cover my loose skin though so I'm trying to find a decent swim skirt to wear with my bikini top.

I agree with you OP! One pieces are unflattering

Couldn't be more grateful! Shame fat men aren't getting insight on swim shorts Vs budgie smugglers.

Swim shorts and a baggy t-shirt for the chaps 😀

Nwxt time bring a book.

VoltaireMittyDream · 31/08/2026 12:16

Larger women certainly look better in bikinis than I do as a slim woman with an extremely wrinkly midriff thanks to having a gigantic baby ten years ago.

There is something quite sumptuous about a round belly or a larger hourglass shape in a bikini. I also think that larger women look less naked and exposed in swimwear generally - more like they are wearing an outfit and not just their underwear.

cupfinalchaos · 31/08/2026 12:16

I’m not fat but skinny and old🤣 don’t want to flaunt my crepy skin so would much prefer a one piece.. but let’s be honest most beaches abroad in the summer are baking hot and I just don’t want to be uncomfortable.

Lentilcakes · 31/08/2026 12:17

I prefer a tankini but you can’t get them as easily anymore. I still wear a bikini - I do put a cover up on if walking about - I’m not fat but I have my weight on my belly.

SnowFrogJelly · 31/08/2026 12:17

Why are you judging ‘fat’ women.. what is ‘fat’ rather than overweight.. why even start a thread about this?

LlynTegid · 31/08/2026 12:18

There are bikinis and there are bikinis. If you get my drift. So not one answer. Personal choice of course though some just blindly follow fashion.

MargaretThursday · 31/08/2026 12:18

I don't. I look like an egg with two rubber bands on.

But my preference is a swimsuit dress. I feel really confident in them, whereas an ordinary swimsuit I feel like everyone's staring. I know they're not, but that's how I feel.

SnowFrogJelly · 31/08/2026 12:18

I’m a bit fat but would never wear a bikini

Eddieswickedstepmother · 31/08/2026 12:19

Taking it one step further, I'm recently back from a European spa where no-one was wearing anything... definitely think I look better naked than in a bikini (and loved the fact that people of all shapes and sizes were completely unselfconscious about their bodies).

Honestly OP I'm amazed that this is what was occupying your mind whilst lying on a beach on holiday! You sound as though you must have been absolutely bored stiff if you couldn't find something more enjoyable to think about.

Bored stiff or just a bit of a judgemental tw@t 🤷🏼‍♀️
Firstly, good on ya for having an opinion and sharing that superior opinion, free speech n all, I’m sure all women thank you…

Secondly, why on earth are you even bothering to go round studying “fat” women in both bikinis and one pieces on the beach and around the pool, and then making a comparison chart in your head (or possibly a little note and bar chart on your phone) whilst you’re supposed to be enjoying your own holiday, instead of using other women’s appearances to fill your time and your head.

Thirdly…no, I just can’t be bothered anymore. You get the gist. Actually, yes, I can, because maybe just change whatever it is in your life that you’re unhappy with. Your little faux “oh don’t women look beautiful, I just had to share it” is just far too transparent. And I don’t care whether you’re fat or not and if you are that it makes it ok cos you’re all part of the same team and you’re sharing the love, because that doesn’t stop you being the aforementioned tw@t. But no one truly happy with their life (or their holiday) would even think of doing this. Reminds me a little of “negging”, tbh. (Are you a bloke?)

Why don’t you get on with your holiday and stop being the holiday weirdo that wanders around the pool staring at fat women everyday (are you sure you’re not a bloke?), because people will have clocked it. Get a book, and sit your own skinny or fat arse in a lounger and get on with your holiday.

No pun intended, but I’ve no skin in the game either way, but I’ve just found you rather annoying.

eta: you’re the reason some women feel uncomfortable to wear what they want to because they’re worried about other people looking at them and judging them. Fortunately most other women (or men…are we still absolutely sure you’re not a man? 🤔), don’t give a (fat) fig’s arse what anyone else is wearing and aren’t even looking at anyone else.

FourGreenElephants · 31/08/2026 12:20

It is kind of obvious - wearing bikini means (can mean) wearing a well fitting supportive bra, which is for some larger body types makes all the difference.

It is much easier to hit the right fit with two separate pieces, than trying to find a onepiece which fits breast correctly, has the preffered bottoms style and correct length/belly fit as well.

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/08/2026 12:20

I think that fat women like me (size 22) look better in structured swim wear, rather than unstructured (whether that be a bikini, tankini or one piece).

hellswelshy · 31/08/2026 12:21

Each to their own. But as a size 14-16 50yr old woman I much prefer myself in a bikini, comfort wise, I just feel free! I don't kid myself I look amazing but I'm not interested in anyone else's take on my body these days. Wear the bikini!
