‘I’ve never worked with someone I have a crush on before’

🙄

if was said when accepting the job role via Teams.

I suggest those replying should probably read all of the OPs posts including the very important drip feed. It tells quite a different story.

It was in response to him telling her every Friday is ‘Cake Friday’
she was the stand out candidate. Even I thought the same.

That puts a completely different slant on things, and now I don't think it's weird at all.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 30/08/2026 20:10

So how is Cake Friday any different from Cake Thursday?

Wonder if she was nervous

foursquares · 30/08/2026 18:40

Calm down, relax. You're totally overreacting. She probably said that as she's nervous.

OP hasn't said how she reacted, or how calm she is?

Boreded · 30/08/2026 20:15

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 30/08/2026 20:06

Because people say they love people all the time when they don't. To the shop assistant who finds the last whatever you need, etc etc.

Having a crush is believable, if juvenile.

That is quite bizarre logic.

It is incredibly unbelievable to say you have a crush on someone you don’t know.

I wouldn't be upset I'd be angry. This is an early attempt at power play from a man towards a woman senior. He is undermining your role by acting like a man chatting up a woman. Brace yourself for "I'll do since it's you asking" type comments plus innuendo to undermine you and flattery to manipulate you, and come down like a ton of bricks at the first instance.

She has eye rolled, said it wasn’t funny, and that it was inappropriate…and started an AIBU on mumsnet. Those are all her reacting to it 🤷‍♀️

Check the other comments from OP…she left out the context

Wtf

If you’d offered me a penguin I would have given you a wedding proposal. A shortbread biscuit and it might have gotten a bit obscene 😂

Unfortunately the only person who proposed marriage is a straight woman in a serious relationship. I’m confident she was joking and I hope her (lovely) partner isn’t making MN threads about it!

All the original post said was what the new hire said. When that poster said calm down/overreacting, that was something they just invented.

We should petition to rename every day to cake day

Cake Monday
Cake Tuesday
Cake Wednesday…

who is with me

Haha was it me? I can assure you that my husband would have let you have me 🤣

getmeabiscuit · 30/08/2026 20:25

It was a joke.Context is everything. It's the kind of thing I would say and then probably cringe a bit later!

Cardhey · 30/08/2026 20:26

Very unprofessional.

Freshrain · 30/08/2026 20:27

Raptors · 30/08/2026 19:52

You can pretend otherwise but you know it was a joke response in regards to the cake discussion and that is why you deliberately didn't put the whole context in the first post.

Her response was completely fine and light-hearted in response to the light-hearted discussion about cake each Friday. To try and make this into something it wasn't is just silly.

I completely agree with this.

With the massive drip feed, my vote has completely changed too.

Lots won't have read through the thread though, which is why I guess you didn't put all the information in the OP, in order to manipulate the vote.

Up until the drip feed, I completely agreed with all the initial replies and the vote at that point.

As an aside, how would you know she was the best candidate ? Hmm

Plra · 30/08/2026 20:28

Really weird and inappropriate thing to say. I’d expect the job offer to be rescinded or to face a few months/years of nonsense from this candidate. Your DH needs to be careful and consider keeping a diary of the inappropriate shit she says.

AmnesiacsDream · 30/08/2026 20:28

BleefinbackBlean · 30/08/2026 19:46

But whatever was said in advance-it’s still very inappropriate. If he’d mentioned a new bonus structure and she’d responded in the same way would that be acceptable?

Bonus structures, as great as they can be, aren't informal and friendly in the way that a Cake Friday is. I wouldn't say responding to bonus info with an obviously jokey comment about having a crush would be totally inappropriate, but it would be less appropriate and far less likely because it wouldn't be being cued up by reference to a perk that is designed to increase friendliness and informality between colleagues.

Arlanymor · 30/08/2026 20:28

So this was over cake?

Ok.

Makebelieveanotherlife · 30/08/2026 20:29

I missed the joke . What is a cake Friday

wildnwilde · 30/08/2026 20:32

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 if your husband thinks this is funny. So innapropriate , immature and unprofessional. Don't know why anyone would voice that in them circumstances even if they thought it.

SewYellowLikeButter · 30/08/2026 20:35

Boreded · 30/08/2026 19:55

Why would it be ok to say she loved him but not that she had a crush on him?

One is a well known hyperbolic response made in many films and TV shows to such a moment, ‘I’ve got a crush on you’ is not. It’s like saying ‘oh I could kill you’ when a friend says something you’re jealous about vs ‘I wish I could bash your head in with a rock’.
