It's on a par with me one colleague saying 'I'm getting a cappucino, can I get you one?' and your colleague responding 'I knew why you're my favourite / why I love you'.

Not hilarious but it's the type of banter that happens in workplaces.

I have a friend who might say something like this in a similar situation, and she's an awesome, hilarious person who is no threat to anyone's marriage. I would try to put it out of my mind if I were you, as ruminating will only hurt you in the long run.

She said "Oh, I"ve got a crush on you now" after being told they give out cake on Fridays, it is slightly clumsy, blurted out in the moment, but also funny and sweet, no wonder they hired her.

I was thinking about this today and just want to acknowledge the OPs feelings. I don’t think it was sincere or that it’s any threat but can agree it was not something I’d say and that it was overly casual remark for a new hire.

Surely the cake Friday thing wasn’t in the same sentence as offering the job?
I mean, I like a slice of cake as much as the next person, but it’s not what makes or breaks a job offer.

So it wasn’t “we’d like to offer you the job”
Her : “got a crush on you”

but “we’d like to offer you the job”
Her “brilliant, thank you”
(sense of relief comes over everyone and tension released)
DH: oh and we have cake every Friday
her: [bumbling crush talk]

Obv it’s still really unprofessional, but not quite at the level of rescinding the offer
