She turned a perfectly normal remark about cakes on Friday into sexual innuendo. Presumably she is starting as she means to go on and this is the level of interaction she expects with her new boss. Totally inappropriate.

A crush is not sexual innuendo. She didn’t suggest rubbing the cream cake all over his chest and licking it off.

I suggest those replying should probably read all of the OPs posts including the very important drip feed. It tells quite a different story.

Exactly this!

Well your H should be retracting the job offer before he lands himself in a whole mess of accusations about inappropriate relationships with junior colleagues

If he and his co director actually laughed about it then both the dynamics of the company and of your H's views about appropriate work relatiionships are totally unhealthy and you should be worried about his boundaries in your marriage as well.

I'm guessing it was a nervous/shocked laugh rather than a funny laugh.

They weren't expecting that response that's for sure.

KeepPumping · 30/08/2026 20:58

Ask him, he seemed to think it was really funny, so did his partner, it isn"t about what random people think is "appropriate" it is about getting along with co-workers and creating a good vibe, if the boss thinks it is "appropriate" then it is, it is his company after all?

That is what is worrying.
If he and his co director are hapoy with sexual innuendo from people they are recruiting it gives an inight into the ethos and lack of professionalism in the company.

How are women ever going to be treated with respect in the work environment if they reduce what should be professional exchanges to talk about fancying their employer?

Grammarnut · 30/08/2026 21:07

MelonSorbet · 30/08/2026 18:24

Yikes. That is a deeply weird thing for the person to say. How did your DH react?

Apparently it involved cake. Cake excuses most things.

Queenncat · 30/08/2026 21:07

Is she attractive?

What is sexual about a crush? I had my first crush at age 4. I had my heart broken when I was 6. wasn’t remotely sexual.

You were 4. This is an adult woman who has just been offered a job
You really think it's normal for this woman to tell her new boss she has a crush on him? We aren't talking about children in a play ground here you know.

By definition a crush is having a romantic interest in someone. Generally in adults that’s a sexual thing. If you meant it platonically you’d say you admired someone.

TheEarlofButties · 30/08/2026 21:13

Exactly the kind of stupid thing I’d say and cringe for the next week about, definitely a joke. What did your husband say about it to you?

She was joking though! Did you miss the cake joke?

Iceplater · 30/08/2026 21:15

I’d think it was profoundly and deeply weird and I’d be speaking to HR about how to lawfully pull the offer / terminate the contract…..

First of all, she was joking. Secondly, you can have a crush on someone and know it’s not going anywhere so it doesn’t become sexual in your mind. The rush to imagine it’s sexual is premature.

Will she be in a client-facing role?

Is you husband famous for his looks?

Or famous for an overinflated male ego.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 30/08/2026 21:18

I bet the woman's cringing herself inside out. Stupid thing to say, but our brains do have a habit of letting us down at crucial moments.

Your husband didn't take is as being inappropriate or unprofessional, so maybe it didn't sound as bad as it looks written down, given the context.

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 30/08/2026 21:19

@nomas
What cake joke?
Op's H said every Friday was cake Friday. How is that a joke? That certainly used to be the tradition in some offices.
How does that make this new recruit telling her new boss she has a crush on him appropriate?

That is her personal choice though, how she interacts in interviews, she is not obliged to follow a blueprint for equality set by other women, she is maybe happy with how she interacts and the level of respect she gets, lets face it if the two main bosses are laughing at your jokes in the interview isn"t that respect?

Error404FucksNotFound · 30/08/2026 21:21

Given the cake update it is clear it was just a joke.
If the people interviewing her thought it was funny then it just shows she's a good fit for the office.

Maybe she meant she wanted to crush the cake into her mouth and eat it whole, maybe it just came out wrong?

QuirkyHorse · 30/08/2026 21:21

Are you worried he might have his head turned?
Is she young or attractive, or both?

I think it was just a flippant remark because of cake Friday. Not overly funny but she was probably nervous/excited at being told she had just landed a job.

We're you listening in to the Teams meeting, or did your dh tell you?

Livelovebehappy · 30/08/2026 21:22

I’m sure she will go far…….

Well yes that style of interview technique obviously gets her jobs. I don't know how you work out it means her new bosses have respect for her though.

As I've already said if OP's H and his fellow director encourage this level of personal familiarity with new employees it says a lot about the lack of professionalism and the ethos of their company. If OP's H does encourage this level of conversation with his women employees then OP has every right to worry about the boundaries he has with junior, particularly women, employees.

notaurewhatusername · 30/08/2026 21:29

Completely unprofessional of her and your DH should certainly decline her application. She is a red flag IMO
