I was going to say it's completely inappropriate in a work environment, and a stupid thing to say.
Then saw the cake comment - Yeah, context is everything. It's clearly a joke in this situation, and changes the whole thing. Should maybe have said that in the OP!

Yep agree with everyone that the contract should be pulled before it’s signed. Asking for trouble imo

I think it's an odd thing to say, especially as a reaction to cake, but then the whole cake Friday thing sounds a bit - ghastly.

Will definitely be a nightmare employee as she clearly lacks insight, maturity, professional boundaries and emotional intelligence. Totally agree with everyone here that suggests rescinding the job offer. She could make your husband’s life a nightmare too. Your hubby has told you, so you can relax and not worry.

Everyone means every person. So yes- I agree with every person who thinks it’s inappropriate.

Cake or no cake, utterly inappropriate. If anyone said that to my husband I’d hope he’d feel awkward as arse, tell HR, and have the offer rescinded cause that’s clearly completely inappropriate and undermining to a married man’s relationship. Urgh. Some people are so weird.

People like cake. It’s just a joking way to say they are happy there will be cake.

I work for a bank in a decent mid tier role…we talk freely and are friendly. I’ve told people I would leave my husband for them (in front of him), a professional environment can still have banter amongst colleagues. What a boring place it would be if not.

Actually I thought about this a bit more, and my most used one that is like this is…did I ever tell you that you were my favourite person who works for (bank) - my husband works for the same bank and sits next to me (we work from home) - he just rolls his eyes at me and tells me he loves me too 🤣

One time someone at work told me “Don’t tell anyone, but I think I’m gonna marry you.”

Spoiler alert: we did not get married or even go on one date.

Well I run a business with my DH and he would not even consider employing anyone who said this. It’s deeply inappropriate and has already blurred any boundaries in my opinion. Even if it was meant as a joke, it still crosses a line.

Red flag. Don't hire.
