Would you be upset if a new hire at work said this to the director? The director is my DH.

Yes people talk rubbish. But there are supposed to be boundaries between senior and junior colleagues for very sensible reasons which serve to protect employees at all levels.

This woman wasn't drunk - i assume she wasn't anyway. I assume this conversation wasn't them sat in the pub together. She told her new boss she has a crush on him so she brought a level of sexual innuendo into a job recruitment interview. In what type of organisation is that an acceptable level of conversation? It would have to be a pretty free and easy organisation that has that as part of it's normal recruitment. It's also very sad that a woman feels she has to tell her new boss she finds him attractive to get the job. And sad that you equate telling a man she finds him.atteactive with having a personality.

No I don"t think that is how it went. I read it as;

Him - "We give you cake on Fridays"
Her " I have never worked with someone I have a crush on before!"

Or maybe they were all drunk and he said "We give you hash cakes on a Friday" and she said "Great I like my hash all crushed up!"

If I told a female director at my company that I had a crush on her, my head would be removed from my neck.

Edited

Would she not wait until you were somewhere private?

ClarasSisters · 30/08/2026 22:57

BleefinbackBlean · 30/08/2026 18:27

He laughed as did the co director

Why assume the crush comment was directed at your dh if there were others on the call? Did she specifically single him out?

StarCourt · 30/08/2026 22:58

Was the co director a man or a woman?

It was in response to him telling her every Friday is ‘Cake Friday’
she was the stand out candidate. Even I thought the same.

Oh ffs, OP. That totally changes everything. So she meant it as an "OMG I love you, you have cake!" way?

You originally made it sound like she knew him from before, or had admired him from afar, and that she was being completely and utterly weird and forward and insinuating that she wanted to sleep with him.

So it was an appropriate joke. Wish you'd said that at the start before you wasted everyone's time.

Yes, I thought she had been looking at the company webpage with his photo on it and buying pet rabbits to practice on.

I have an interest in the business so will be keeping a very close eye. She’s the same age as us I would say, some might think her attractive I guess. She will be replacing Sales Head. I still think without the cake mention it’s still inappropriate

What is your interest in the business? Spurious or shares?

I would most definitely advise the new hire to steer clear of this job

I don’t understand. Were you also on the interview panel if you thought she was a stand out candidate? But you don’t work there,
why was cake Friday mentioned in an interview at all?
i don’t understand why it came up and neither do I understand the crush comment in relation to the cake Friday. All sounds terrible, gauche and awkward from all angles

Personally I would withdraw the job offer. And if I didn't I would change the reporting line so they don't report to your DH. Talk to HR and get employment law advice.

Gymnopedie · 30/08/2026 23:48

OK the cake thing gives context but it still doesn't seem appropriate. Even if she was joking, that's the sort of joke you come out with when you've got to know someone as a friend/colleague, know their sense of humour and how the joke would land. Not something you say to someone you've only just met - and over Teams, not even face to face - who's just interviewed you for and offered you a job and who will be your boss.

At best she has a problem with social boundaries and it could spell trouble down the line. What else might she say when she's joking?

My word is she screwed. I would never take a job where husband and wife are both involved.

She may turn out to have boundary issues, but you’ve already marked her from one dumb comment and started a thread to get agreement from other women rather than perspective.

Millytante · 31/08/2026 05:33

foursquares · 30/08/2026 18:40

Calm down, relax. You're totally overreacting. She probably said that as she's nervous.

Dear oh dear; if she’s a gawky 15-year old on work experience, gabbling wildly out of embarrassment and confusion, it’d be one thing, but if she’s a grown woman, either she’s an unstable liability or she has overweening confidence about the inevitability of a romantic conquest there. Neither is conducive to harmony at work.
Defenestration; stat!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 31/08/2026 05:42

Based In your current attitude you have it in for her and she is not going to be treated fairly, you will picking on every little thing she says and does. If I was her she should run away from you all as fast as she can but if she takes the job please take a look at how you behave and give her a fair chance.

some might even say she’s attractive, this sounds so catty

Keep a close eye on your dh too.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 31/08/2026 07:40

Oh if someone said that to my husband we would be scrapping in the car park. He has had people say they fancy him before but he’s always shut it down with “ew I’m married why would you share that?” Which I think is the right way to handle it. That’s pretty much what I said or I’ll say “that’s so inappropriate when you know I’m married” if I have to be nicer about it. What did your DH say?

Also very unprofessional and all that but on a human level I’d want to beat that bitch up.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 31/08/2026 07:41

I think she's probably cringing like mad now thinking why did my attempt at some interview humour (we all try that to an extent) went wrong there.

I'm sure she meant something along the lines of having a 'crush' (bad choice of word in the moment) on the company if they have cake every Friday.

She's probably sitting at home now thinking how am I going to clear the air on my first day at work I'm so embarrassed.

X

SuePer · 31/08/2026 08:00

I wonder if he'd have giggled about 'cake day' if the applicant was a 40yr old bloke called Colin and not an attractive woman.

BEAchDays2 · 31/08/2026 08:04

The context changes it. It’s a joke.

Spot on.

You have an issue and sound jealous/threatened from reading your posts.

That’s the crux of this hence the drip feed of what happened.

I feel for the candidate.

You started a thread for support but only gave half the story.
