My dd14 was supposed to be sleeping at a friend's tonight. They have had an argument and she said let's just leave it and go to sleep her friend told her she had to leave so she's walked home and just come in the door at gone 10pm. I can't believe the mum didn't step in and do anything or let me know and I would've got her. I've said to dd why didn't you call me but she just shrugged and said she was fine walking and didn't want to stand outside waiting for me. Its about a 10 minute walk. I don't let her out on her own at this time of night. As a parent i would have stepped in and can't believe this other mum did nothing.

Yes. And once you sorted everything out in real life you could have come back on here, told everyone why you had disappeared, and given an update if you wanted to.

Or you could have gone and sorted things out in real life and not come back to update if you didn’t feel like it.

Because MN is not real life.

Mumsnet doesn't work like that though, does it?

Sorry didn't know you dictated how often people are allowed to be on mumsnet. Next time I will post once and dissappear, answer no questions and read no responses

But so what? So what if lots of strangers got annoyed that they didn’t get an update?

I mean l would assume the mum didn't know she had left..but a 10min walk is fine surley for a 14 year old.

Do you ever read the papers or watch the news? No it’s not safe or fine for a 14yr old to walk home at 10pm in the dark Ffs show some common sense grown women get snatched off the streets raped & murdered; I can only assume you don’t have children or spend your life with your head up your posteria.

Yes, you can do that if you want. You don’t have to prioritise MN over sorting out your child’s safety.

But surely if she's not the guilty party she would still feel bad & concerned enough for the child to communicate about what happened?

My child has been home since I wrote the first post. What safety concerns should I be prioritising

Communicating with the other mother to find out if she knew your daughter had left and walked home, which would tell you how serious a chat you need to have with your daughter about her behaviour in the future.

I don't know her well. I've seen her a couple of times. I'm going to see if i can find her on Facebook and message her

What? Surely you have the mum's phone number? Just call her.

This thread is insane. My 14 year old would not be allowed to walk around alone at 10pm and those of you who are allowing it are naive, neglectful or both.

However, you don’t have to meet your 14 year old’s friend’s mothers. That’s for when they are small children.

For whatever reason a 14 year old child was out walking late at night in the dark alone. Her friend's Mother should take some responsibility for that while she was supposedly in her care.

fumingrightnow1 · 18/08/2026 22:48

She could of got it from my dd

She COULD have got your telephone number from your daughter but your daughter left rather hurriedly.

I'd make sure that you always have the parents telephone number in future as your daughter can't be trusted to keep you in the loop

So are you going to go round and follow it up? Your child’s safety is not her choice is it?

Timeforachange26 · 19/08/2026 18:55

Fair enough. Good luck if her views are different from yours.

Literally just wrote when it feels right FOR HER. I didn’t write when it feels right for her and me. I’m just glad to provide you with the opportunity to vent the day’s beef on an internet stranger. You’re welcome.
Anyway. I won’t be replying as again as this is derailing from OP’s post and tiresome.

I’d be furious OP, also. My son had a friend over and they rowed badly. Friend wanted to go home. I contacted his parents to check they were at home and took him even though that child was being a tit. (I have no beef with him though. I like him even though on that occasion he was being challenging.)
Even if your child was a nuisance, the parent kind of took that risk on by having her over. We all do when other people’s kid’s come over.
The other parent is a dick. I probably wouldn’t have messaged them though - I’d have been way too mad. But the other child would not be passing my threshold again and my child would NOT ever be going there either. Who needs mates like this?

Don’t be ridiculous. Why would she go round? What would that achieve? Entertainment for you?

Absolutely not, some people are just strange. Makes me wonder if they really have children of their own!
