Am I being petty to go back to the level of contact I had with my parents that I had before I had a baby

AIBU to just stop replying and engaging with my parents? I’ve never really got on with them and so had very little contact, but last year when I announced I was pregnant they started to contact me a lot more and expressed they were sorry and wanted a fresh start.

They would ask how I was doing and what I was up to. Now baby is here, and it’s become clear they were just asking how I was doing to make sure grandbaby was ok. When baby was born my mother would stop round with foods for me- but things that I haven’t liked since my own childhood-but stuff that is good for the baby. Think egg salad, when I have never been able to stomach the smell, that kind of thing.

But what has really upset me is every day I get a message of “how is baby today?” No, how are you both, or asking after me, just every day how is baby.

I think if we had a good relationship I probably wouldn’t mind, but it just shows to me that this change from them isn’t an attempt to rebuild bridges with me, it’s purely about them wanting to see my baby.

I haven’t had a conversation with them about the situation, but I have seen them. It’s getting worse, I’m currently biting my tongue.

As I am not saying anything my mother is becoming more and more bold and overstepping more. I know I should probably say something now to stop is escalating to the point it is unfixable; but then I also think she is an adult, knows exactly what she is doing, so it isn’t really up to me to police her.

They keep coming round with 10 minutes notice, but I’m also getting sent articles or Facebook posts on things where I have said something and they disagree. Things like have I got enough clothes on the baby, they’ll pop round, comment that she seems cold (even when it’s 28 degrees here) and when they leave without any message I’ll just get sent a post on how to dress a baby. No it was nice to see you, just a here’s how you should be doing it. Maybe if they were involved or helpful I’d feel like they had license to say these things, but it feels very passive aggressive/backseat driver

Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you, my life just totally got in the way of being on MN.

If it was me I'd have to have a stern conversation at least. You are mother, you decide what's best and you don't need their input thanks. You appreciate their thoughts but just no. Specify that you are also mother and their child and it would be nice to know they wanted to see you as well, if not jog on.

Or just sod them off to how it was previously. You and your family and your mental health come first, if they aren't bringing anything positive to the table (no pun meant re food) then they can leave you be. I don't envy you this OP, but don't let it rattle on, it's bothered you too much already 💐
