AIBU to expect my parents to manage one vegan barbecue meal?

Surely most people can survive if they have just one vegan meal ???!!!

My parents have decided they don’t think they can attend a bbq at my house due to the fact we are a vegan family and they are worried about ‘nutrition gaps’ !!!

Neither have any health conditions.

It’s one meal and we are offering a wide variety of things plus desserts. I said to then if they don’t fancy it that’s fine but they said it’s because they are worried about the food, and asked could they bring their own (no! ) or would I get them a few bits they can eat (non vegan) to which I said I can’t have it in the house.

Surely they could just come for a drink and eat later at home ? They are making such a fuss ?? It’s not like we are pushing veganism or the ethics behind our choice we weren’t planning on talking about it just having a nice family get together !

It’s one meal?
You can’t push veganism onto anyone by INVITING them to a BBQ. It’s an invitation, not a summons.

You know vegan meals are just normal meals but without the meat right?

For example, if you eat a Sunday roast, do you think the peas, carrots, sweetcorn, roast spuds and stuffing are vegan? Or you you think they are just 'food'?

We do vegetable kebabs, vegan burgers (made with lentils, chickpeas, sweet potato, quinoa and whatever else dh adds 😂) grilled portobello mushrooms, there’s lots you can cook on a bbq and it all has a nice chargrilled taste.

Also the bbq salads - we do a 3 bean tofu and rice bbq one, then a lentil pasta and peppers , tomatoes and chilli. Fresh bread, houmous etc.

Desserts are fresh fruit and a vegan cheesecake or vegan ice creams.

I’ve tried to explain to them that it will be a balanced meal but they can’t comprehend !

Just sounds horrible, I'd be searching for excuses not to go and eat your vegan crap as well.
You might be on your high horse and pretending your better than everyone because you're all vegan but most plant based foods are synthetic, harmful to the environment and ultra processed so no you shouldn't be surprised that no one else is up for that.

DoubleShotEspresso · 12/08/2026 18:10

How would you feel if they suggested “just one meat bbq” I?

Not the same thing at all ffs. 🙄 Most vegans have a moral objection to eating animal products. Meat eaters (of which I am one) do NOT have any objection whatsoever to eating things that don't contain animal products, as we prove every time we have a banana, a slice of toast with jam, or a tin of baked beans.

Yes I do know, as I am a vegan myself

Wow. I am always amused that vegans are stereotyped as intolerant, but on threads like this it’s the non vegans who post rude , ignorant and offensive stuff like this.

No they’re not. Vegans eat vast quantities of fruit, vegetables, gains and pulses, not pretend burgers from the supermarket freezer. The ones I know don’t want make believe meat.

Can't see the point of a vegan barbecue. Barbecue is mostly meat.

A BBQ is just a piece of cooking equipment, just like an oven or a microwave. There are no rules about what has to be cooked on a BBQ.

BBQ does not mean
meat!!

She hasn't indicated anywhere she considers veganism 'superior', stop being so rediculous.

'most plant based foods are synthetic'

None of their bbq menu sounds 'synthetic' - how is a vegetable kebab (so I presume peppers, onions, sweetcorn, zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms) etc synthetic?

Do you think the veggies you have with your Sunday roast are synthetic?

Most plant-based foods!? That’s just ignorant and bizarre prejudice.

Plant-based food is plants. It doesn’t have to be fake meat or fake burgers or fake anything like that and you can perfectly well make bean burgers at home.

You’re just showing that you don’t know anything about preparing orcooking anything that isn’t meat or dairy.

If you think it's remotely comparable, then that says more about you than it does about the OP.

Of course it’s comparable. Being vegan or not is personal choice, nothing more. If you want people to respect your choices then you respect theirs. I say this as a veggie who cooks meat for others because it’s not up to me to dictate what others eat.

They aren’t vegan when I make them because they’re usually covered in goose fat or butter and covered in a meat gravy. Stuffing made from sausage meat and cheese on my cauliflower. The “do everything vegan apart from the chicken and do a couple of vegan sausages for the vegan” just results in a sad roast dinner for everyone!

Their moral objection isn’t anyone else’s problem. Said as a vegetarian.

Grapewrath · 13/08/2026 17:18

Why do people go on about vegans eating ultra processed and synthetic foods? We eat vegetables and grains, as do most meat eaters.
There is nothing synthetic about the OPs BBQ.

So you’d expect a Jewish guest to eat bacon? A Hindu to eat steak? This are just moral objections after all…….

But surely, surely you get the point? Of course you can cook vegetables and cover them in animal products. But you don’t have to. Vegetables are vegan.

godmum56 · 13/08/2026 17:24

actually you know what? We are back to the old thing of an invitation is not a summons. The OP invited he parents to dinner. The parents asked if they could bring their own food. The Op said no. The parents declined the invitation. no one is BU but the drama certainly is.

It’s one bloody meal 😂. We often go for dinner at friends’ houses. They always ‘dictate what we eat’, because they’re the hosts and they’re doing the cooking. We eat what they feed us.

Redintoothandclaw · 13/08/2026 17:26

Dweetfidilove · 12/08/2026 17:18

Presumably as vegans you're entirely against offering meat or vegetarian options, but I'd still attend. It's quite easy to fill my belly and/or bring something to eat and just enjoy the company.

They've asked if they can bring their own food and OP has refused to allow that.

Redintoothandclaw · 13/08/2026 17:29

I think both OP and her parents are being unreasonable. It's unreasonable to think that having one vegan meal will adversely affect your health. And it's unreasonable not to allow your parents to bring some meat or cheese to the barbecue, assuming they don't intend to cook it on the barbecue.

That's fine but I'd have to decline to eat or eat very little of certain things because as i said upthread, I wouldn't want to spend all next day on the loo

MaidOfSteel · 13/08/2026 17:36

You’re a grown up. You have a choice to be vegan. Your parents also have the choice not to attend. Accept it.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 13/08/2026 17:36

BuildbyNumbere · 13/08/2026 15:48

So you eat meat for every meal? Yeah. Ok 🙄

Eggs, cheese, yoghurt or meat? Yes. Feel pretty rubbish if I don’t get one of those in. I said animal protein. Not a roast joint

I have endometriosis and react to gluten, a lot of grains, beans, soy etc

Today I had eggs for breakfast and a mozzarella and tomato salad for lunch. A fairly standard European diet…

We’re talking about the OP’s parents though, not you. There’s no suggestion that eating vegan food gives them the shits.

TerracottaWorrier · 13/08/2026 17:38

I am a vegetarian who gets a lot of her protein from plant sources and I still think that menu has too many lentils in it.

Not everyone likes lentils.. I do, but I know other people might not want to. @
