My husband wants me to pay more towards the bills…

I’d really appreciate some outside perspective because I’m starting to feel like I’m being unreasonable, but I’m not sure.
My husband earns around £4,000 a month and I earn around £1,500. I only work 3 days a week because our youngest isn’t at nursery yet, so increasing my hours isn’t really an option at the moment.
We don’t have a mortgage, but my husband wants me to take over the council tax and electricity, which come to around £500 a month combined.
I already pay approximately £500 a month for groceries, as well as paying for our two children’s activities, days out, clothes, and various other expenses for them.
When we go on holiday, say a £4,000 holiday, I’ll usually contribute around £1,000. Even that is difficult for me on my income.
My husband says he runs out of money every month, but the problem is that I have no idea where his money is going. He doesn’t seem willing to sit down and go through the finances with me and explain what he’s spending it on.
What really bothers me is that he somehow has the money for an annual £1,000 golf trip, while telling me that he doesn’t have enough money and that I should take on more household bills.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t have hobbies or spend money on himself. But given the huge difference in our incomes, and the fact that I’m working reduced hours partly because of childcare, I feel like our finances should be looked at as a household rather than simply splitting bills.
Am I being unreasonable for thinking he should be contributing significantly more to the household expenses?

Why are they getting a bad deal??
I gave up work for 15 years and never paid a penny towards anything!
Once back to work I only pay £100 a month for one bill, I still only pay one bill after being back in work for the last 20 years!!
Everything else is mine to do as I please with!

Financial wise, my situation is similar. I bring home £1600 and my husband about 3k. Never joined bank accounts, but that's the choice of both of us. Laziness maybe, never got round to it!

I pay all the utilities, kids stuff, my own expenses and he pays the mortgage and a heavier proportion of the food. Holidays are dependent on other expenses or how much the holiday is. Some years he pays the full amount, some years I pay half.

BUT, this is what works for us and we AGREE and are happy with it. If I was to struggle for whatever reason he would take on extra if needed. Regardless of where the money lands, a joint account or 2 seperate ones, it's still a household income at the end of the day.

No way of doing things is wrong. Doing things unconventional, like us, isn't wrong if it works for us or anyone else.

What's wrong is when you're not on the same page and you're pushed into doing things with your own money. That's financial abuse.

Exactly like us!

Yetanotherone12 · 12/08/2026 21:04

CauseImMrDarkside · 12/08/2026 20:12

Yeah, us too!
All this piling it all into one account is odd and old fashioned.
We are like you.
Joint "bills" account where all the usual DDs go out of, we both put the same in a month, to more than cover this and leaves a "float" of approx £500 a month for extras, meals out, etc.
Kids school food comes out of that too.

We both then keep to ourselves what's left from our wages. Our own car stuff comes out of those, tax, Ins etc.
My wife was on way more than me at one point, and that was fine. Then I was on more than her. At one point we had the same monthly income.
If one of us is skint at the end of the month, then the other will bail them out. I gave her £800 to pay her credit card once, as she had been building it up with her own stuff.
It all works perfectly well for us!

Similar here.

we have completely separate money. No joint accounts at all.

however mentally it’s all one pot. I pay all bills. Dh will pay for stuff out and about, food shops etc. He was short last month for his credit card so I gave him the money. if I’m short he’d do his best to bail me out.

no counting, no who pays what. No one of us should pay more or less. We live on my salary, Dh’s money is our “fun money”

some of it is I saw my mum totally up shit creek without her own money. Dh doesn t want joint accounts either as his ex wife systematically emptied every account before she left him for her OM. Left him with not a penny to his name. At least neither of us can start hiding money if we know we want to split, and if we do we both have enough to make new lives.

If they’re married all assets are joint.

my house is in my sole name but dh could get half if we split, same as I’d get half of anything in his name.

Your assets are not joint if you're married. While marital assets will be split if you divorce, while you are married assets in your name are, for the most part, yours to do what you like with. Including sell (or remortgage) and then spend the money on yourself, on an affair, or give to a friend.

Yes, I understand that. However I was replying in the context of the thread should a married couple split and asset distribution.

assets are only joint for purposes of a divorce settlement. Any other circumstance such as death they remain sole assets.

i was referring to pp who have stated she needs to be on the deeds to be entitled to a share. It they are married it doesn’t matter whose name it is in, or whether she’s on deeds or mortgage. A divorce court will include it as a marital asset.

She needs to be on the deeds so he can't take equity out and spend/give away/etc. the money.

Not sure that would help. Dh’s ex did exactly that while having an affair and planning to divorce him 🤷‍♀️.

however if she is going to divorce him the time it will take to get him to agree to put her on the deeds, and who knows if by doing that it might trigger him into taking equity out…

it will be quicker and probably more effective to register a home rights notice to preserve her interest.

I'd be more concerned, based on what OP has written so far, that if all income was combined, the husband would end up using her money as he sees fit and OP might end up needing permission to use her own money/husband would spend hers aswell as he sees fit.

Clareypoos · 14/08/2026 12:26

I don’t think that what he is asking for is unreasonable, £500 for the bills, £500 for food and £500 for yourself and the kids seems ok, but I think you need more transparency here. You should sit down and go through all your incomings and outgoings and discuss the possibility of putting some in a joint account.

lilkitten · 14/08/2026 13:20

We had separate finances until I went on maternity leave with our eldest. Since then it's all gone into one pot. I couldn't go back to work as before, but my bit got added (I felt bad that I couldn't bring as much money in, but DP was fine as he said I did the childcare and it allowed him to work). Now our youngest is 12 we've started splitting it and giving ourselves an amount each month that is totally ours, and once she finishes school we plan to split our joint finances completely. Right now though, I feel you should have a shared pot.

100% this. Why people get married and don't share finances is beyond me. Normally its the woman getting a bad deal when joint accounts aren't used because they are normally the ones giving up their careers for childcare and undervalued.

I always had my own account, so did my husband. He was useless with money and if we had a joint account he would have spent my money as well as his. So that's why I would NEVER share finances with anyone else. Still beyoimd you?

“I’ve invested it for you”

Neighbours married decades ago her pensions do go into her account but he checked the balance and invested it all for her still. Then he had a stroke, so makes her tootle off to banks and building societies periodically to invest it still. She hasn't had new clothes in the ten years I've known her. She's no idea what he's got, just pays the tax on her income. It's bizarre.

CauseImMrDarkside · 17/08/2026 13:00

Having to pay for everything, whilst you get away with paying hardly anything and gloating about it! Ew!

Thank you, everyone, for replying.
I’m heartbroken as my marriage is coming to an end.
When I came back from visiting my family, my husband suddenly said that we can come back to this conversation in January. That was his response when I asked for his bank statements, so I’ve assumed he’s hiding something in those statements.
Then he started being nasty towards me, snapping at me and saying that I don’t let him make decisions about our kids. The truth is, I’m with our kids 90% of the time, so I know what’s best for them, and I’m making decisions that I feel are right.
We had an argument today, and he looked at me and said, “Get out of my life,” with so much hatred in his voice. I know he meant it.
I just feel bad about destroying the family for our boys. I’m broken. He’s a nasty, nasty man. He’s said things like that in front of our older son as well, which is just nasty.

@ZiggyNiko HE has destroyed your marriage. HE did these things - not you. See a solicitor asap.

ZiggyNiko · 02/09/2026 20:19

It’s just really sad. There’s no willingness to go to therapy, apologise to me, be honest about things. Just hate and nasty words towards me. In front of kids.

I'm so very you're going through this, you will however be better on yourself even if it will hurt, you deserve more 🤍. Did I just read that correctly he agreed to show you the statements in January?

It's incredibly hard and so hurtful, but now is the time to limit any more damage he can do to you and your children. Therapy, apologies, all those ships sailed a very long time ago. I am speaking from horrible experience. I came out the other side, and you will too 💜

He said we can come back to the conversation in January and show me the statements then so I presume he would try to live clean until then and hope the stuff from previous months wouldn’t be seen. There’s definitely something dodgy in there

@ZiggyNiko

I am so sad for you reading this update.
To clarify HE has broken this family. This is not on you!

On the flip side by leaving this abusive relationship you were showing your boys that it is not okay to put up with this behaviour. That this is not how relationships are meant to be. And that you do not need to stay in abusive relationships. There are also lessons here about how they should and should not treat women.

I hope you can get all of the evidence you need before he either hides or destroys it.

Sending hugs to you 🫂
