AIBU to feel put out being asked to bring dessert and ice?

I will probably get told I’m being unreasonable here but I’m ready if that’s the case 😂 my friend has invited me and my two kids to stay over for the night, it’s been planned for ages, and ahead of next week I’ve been asked to pick up dessert and ice because she doesn’t know what to get the kids for pudding… it’s lovely that she’s having us, but if I were hosting I’d provide food and drinks, not because I have loads of money or anything but I just feel like that’s what you do when friends come over. I would always bring a bottle over to the hosts house whenever I go somewhere, and so maybe this is the equivalent but I don’t know, something about this is making me annoyed and I’m not sure why!

Offering to take dessert is standard for us if we are ever invited to lunch or dinner. It's like taking a bottle of wine but when you have kids in tow dessert is universal.

I agree it's a completely standard guest contribution when hosts are doing the rest

WTF is love language ??

It's bollocks, is what it is.

That's why you should have offered before she had to ask.

I agree but it’s next week, I’m drowning in kids and work, I would of got there by this weekend 😂 or I would have just grabbed some nice bits, I know what’s for main so I would have probably just gone rogue!!

I'd have thought the dessert would be cheaper to buy than wine.

Surely you'd take a bottle of wine regardless of taking something for dessert?
A punnet of strawberries, a tub of creme fraiche and maybe some meringue nests isis easy enough to take.
I don't think it's unusual for someone to ask that you take a dessert.

It's bollocks, is what it is.

I don’t know, if someone tried to touch me I’d run away, someone helped me with a job, I love them forever

This is why she’s asked you- she probably doesn’t need a load of random bits that you’ve decided would go with whatever main she’s planned (hate it when guests do this) whereas she does need a dessert.

Agree with others it’s a perfectly normal request, and it’s also normal to ask if you can bring anything when invited to dinner.

Always round at mine! And no kids. I haven’t had invited her to stay because I don’t have a spare room. I provide it all, yes.

She is providing for you and your two kids, and you only have to reciprocate for a single person, so there is an imbalance there already. I think its pretty nice of her to take that on, honestly. I would never go empty handed anyway. If people tell me what to bring, it is always easier/better than taking random things.

When a guy says it to you it's 🚩 otherwise it's cringe.

I always split the bill and would always do rounds (albeit I go out rarely)
I haven’t been to this friends house with both my kids for years, it was planned months ago by her as she wanted to have them stay which is super sweet. Maybe I’m old fashioned 😂

nope just tight and Petty and your single mate coming is not remotely similar to an over nighter for you and your kids.

im really shocked you are so tight and trying to palm it off as love language and old fashioned it’s neither. You just want to be provided for,

Good god. Now irs work and the kids.

get some wine, a couple of dessert choices and some ice, and give your head a wobble, irs not a free hotel stay,

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · Yesterday 21:51

So there is ONE of her - single friend and THREE of you - you and 2 children
and this ONE is doing dinner / having you all stay overnight and prob producing some form of breakfast

and you are whinging over dessert and ice ?!!! ice is about £1.20 a bag and I am sure you will find a dessert for £3.80 so you are going on about £5

I do hope you are still taking wine...

Sweetdreamsbeautifulnightmare · Yesterday 21:51

She had no kids and she hosts you and your kids and you think this is weird? Definitely give your head a wobble!

Frozen water in the form of an ice cube, alongside a sweet treat 😂

@Bigfishlittlefishcardboardbox39 I can only presume you've experienced a hard week ...

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · Yesterday 21:53

' love language '
good grief you are not appearing on Love island !

How old are you ?!!!

VoltaireMittyDream · Yesterday 21:54

I was raised always to ask what I can bring if I’m going to someone’s house.

And often people who don’t have kids don’t know what other people’s kids are allowed to eat, in terms of sugary drinks or desserts.

Leaving that decision to the parents (‘I don’t know what they’ll eat! Bring what they’re comfortable with!’) means everyone avoids the awkwardness of a weekend ruined by either hyping the kids up on contraband sweets and ice cream / miserable kids whose parents wouldn’t allow them have the offered treats / everyone having to eat soggy homemade trifle.

It’s not a hotel! I’m staying in a bed with my kids over at my mates house and having pasta bake!

Honestly I wouldn't turn up at someone's house empty handed that's just rude where I'm from. Being asked to bring something specific and which doesn't cost very much would save me the bother of trying to guess what to bring.

Sharmelbreak · Yesterday 21:56

Totally normal, the kid friendly version of bring a bottle. Nothing to see here.

VoltaireMittyDream · Yesterday 21:57

This being MN, I think you need to confront her, then block and go NC

vickylou78 · Yesterday 22:17

I agree with others it's a kids friendly version of bring a bottle! Just grab a chocolate cake and some strawberries or something.

PussyGaylore · Yesterday 22:20

Most people who come for dinner/ supper will ask if there iid anything they can bring. I’ll often reply with. No all sorted or sometimes say ‘ can you bring desert’ . I think YABU.

Mingou · Yesterday 22:22

Old fashioned? No, just cheap. She shouldn't have had to ask you , you should have offered

ByRoseBiscuit · Yesterday 22:24

I would never go to someone’s house when they are feeding me dinner, and not ask if there’s anything I can bring. YABU not to
ask, and then to be annoyed at being asked to bring dessert.
