Doom scrolling on fb as cant sleep.
An advert pops up on my feed from M&S for crotchless thongs. Have I actually fallen asleep and am dreaming ?! WTAF is M&S thinking?!! They appear to be stocking Anne Summers-talk about rebrand of underwear dept!

Might be useful for 'air conditioning' during heat waves.

If you have to wear a crotchless thong to get the guy in the mood it sounds pretty desperate to me.

Where did she say it was to get the guy in the mood?

I would understand if they had replaced their shop, changed the decor and started sell sex toys exclusively.

But the outraged because they also sell a few crotchless things, as well as the usual granny pants and good basics in between, neither granny nor porn star?
If it's tacky, don't buy it?

I also wonder if M&S are selling underpants with a hole through which to poke a penis.
there are called pants.. men don't need to remove their pants to pee...

or not always, I haven't written a thesis on the subject either 😂

My meaning was for titillation purposes, not peeing.
Noting the repeated ageism throughout your posts too. Lovely.

I agree. I’ve had some of my best sex in absolute shockers of frumpiness.

I’m amazed the Benny Hill role play does it for so many women. You’d have thought we’d have all moved on but of course, it doesn’t matter how emancipated women are, male sexuality is still stuck in the 70s.

And while many women continue to pander it will sadly continue.

10 bagged in the last 48hrs…..so there is some interest!

Yes but knowing M and S the reviews will be written by Eric of Bristol. " I loved these - they are a bit snug but give me such a womanly feel" .

What’s sad about it? What other women choose to do in the privacy of their own bedroom is nobody’s business but their own.

It is sad that ingrained conditioning which started right back when we were first born makes us do so.

or maybe some women like sex. Possibly because their partner is great in bed?

And people like different things in bed, big deal?

theneighbourstolemyteacup · 30/07/2026 09:54

It always amuse me how some women who scream against the "Patriarchy" etc are the most vocal and vehement about the way women MUST think and act.

You might want to unpack that a little. What conditioning makes us want to inject a bit of zing into our sex lives? Sex with the same person for decades can get very dull.

StarlightLady · 30/07/2026 09:56

MN makes money from advertising. M&S makes money from selling things. This is how the economy and business works.

I wear M&S thongs, but l see little point in crotchless thongs but that is a separate issue.

In addition MN also produce their own branded “Mumsnet Vibrater”. If you don’t want these things then don’t buy. But let’s not make commercial decisions a big deal.

Ann Summers also sell more “run of the mill” undies too, it’s not all red mesh and cut outs.

It doesn’t amuse me in the slightest. It’s getting very old to be told you’re “doing feminism wrong”.

I keep getting this advert, and every time I do my brain screams LOBSTER CLAW at me

sweetpickle2 · 30/07/2026 10:11

I am amazed at the amount of people on here who have never worn crotchless pants before. Maybe TMI but when my libido took a nosedive after starting SSRIs they were one of the things that helped bring it back- wasn't wearing them every day of course, but walking around feeling like I have a 'secret' makes you feel very sexy.

CrystalSingerFan · 30/07/2026 10:47

<Misses the point>

Well I'm pleased to learn a new technical term. 'Eyelash detailing'. Who knew? 😋

StarlightLady · 30/07/2026 13:18

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 29/07/2026 14:21

No. It’s tacky and vulgar.

Neither of which attract me to a shop.

Perfectly possible to have a good sex life without crap like this.

I also wonder if M&S are selling underpants with a hole through which to poke a penis.

The latter have been sold for years. Y fronts!

As I have previously clarified up thread, my meaning was a cut out penis hole for titillation purposes.
This would be equivalent to crotchless knickers.

maxslice · 29/07/2026 06:17

They’re a business. Apparently, this kind of thing sells. End of.

I have tried regular thongs a time or two. They were very uncomfortable and absolutely useless. I have hair bands with more
fabric. I’m all for what a former flatmate called
”company lingerie”, but as an everyday garment, crotched or crotchless, thongs are just silly

Thongs are what I wear daily, mine are comfortable, prevent visible lines and stop the dreaded 4 bum cheeks that some briefs give me!
They dont have to be uncomfortable!
No to crotchless ones

Katigee410 · 29/07/2026 18:21

Not offended, but I just wonder how much material goes into making a crotchless thong, and why make one. Surely you can just yank to the side if need to for whatever reason 🤭

My mum was a young woman during the Second World War and used to call a woman of the same age as her as "American Knickers".
One Yank and they're off !!

I hope you don’t mean men who role play Benny Hill - those little round glasses and funny hat wouldn’t do it for me!

The problem for a male equivalent is that our stuff is all on the outside so anything like crotchless pants would mean no support or containment for the meat and veg, friction issues with trouser zips, potential issues with bits getting caught in zips....

DaringQuoter · 30/07/2026 14:04

The mind boggles 😂

This should not be allowed, and especially not in a respectable establishment like Marks and Spencer. My Grandma used to shop there when she was alive! She would have had a heart attack if she had seen these tawdry and sordid garments while shopping for her smalls.

… and your grandma probably bought her stockings and suspenders there. Times change. I wouldn’t wear a crotchless thong. I wouldn’t wear dungarees either. Neither are me! But to say it shouldn’t be allowed?

Women who enjoy and embrace their sexuality (try reading the feminist book “Raising the Skirt” by Dr Catherine Blackledge) are no less feminist than those who criticise women for choosing what to buy.

Wingingit73 · 30/07/2026 14:31

Im not sure what material is left in a crotchless thong? 😂

StarlightLady · 30/07/2026 14:43

Dutchhouse14 · 29/07/2026 08:49

Yes! They could expand their dine for 2 specials to include a choice of Ann Summers foreplay items - they already have the voice over artist for advertising-genius!

Starter, main, a bottle of wine and a choice of desert or a box of condoms. 😀
