Dutchhouse14 · Today 01:04

Doom scrolling on fb as cant sleep.
An advert pops up on my feed from M&S for crotchless thongs. Have I actually fallen asleep and am dreaming ?! WTAF is M&S thinking?!! They appear to be stocking Anne Summers-talk about rebrand of underwear dept!

I don’t want to shop in a place which sells porn pants.
Total disrespect to their longterm customer base in favour of chasing new markets.

What?’ This is ridiculous

Adverts are targeted based on your viewing history…

Which is why this particular ad seems so glaringly odd! What are M&S’s social media team up to?!

wishingonastar101 · Today 12:09

I think I am being a bit simple... but aren't thongs only crotch? surely if you take the crotch out of a thong it's a belt?

😂

Having seen the image of them (too scared to open the link on my browser as I'm at work). I'd look like a grouper in a bridle!

😂😁😂 ‘grouper in a bridle’ made me choke on my tea, thank you!

No? There’s the whole front and back too? The crotch is the bottom bit and it isn’t non existent, it’s just split in two underneath.

Dontgetstuckinthepast · Today 12:28

They looked like moths.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · Today 12:30

I also got this coming up yesterday, to my mild surprise. I don't think it is much related to search history, as mine would be extremely dull. I just think they look uncomfortable. I like the M and S bid period pants with their padded gussets, myself.

DaringQuoter · Today 13:31

Lots of chuckles this morning! Thanks Mumsnetters 😄😅😂🤣

Palomiino · Today 13:32

I agree!

Rothburypixie · Today 13:34

I don’t understand the outrage. It’s sexy underwear for women who choose to wear it, you are not held at gunpoint to buy it.

MyGirlJ · Today 13:34

I understand where you're coming from.
I'm certainly no prude, and i saw the same ad yesterday and it unsettled me. I just don't associate M&S with crotchless knickers!

Trounlet · Today 13:40

I got this advert too, next to a lace collar (& I checked it was to go around your neck).

It's not the existence of crotchless knickers I object too, but come on M&S no one is going to think I need some Ann Summers knickers....I know M& S will stock them. Unless Anne Summers is looking at entering the 70yo+ market 🤔

what on earth?

Are you scared a neighbour would see you in such a place of depravation and would assume you are not there for the granny pants?😂

Are you scared someone would associate you with some women who.. have SEX! 😂😂

Iloveeverycat · Today 13:45

Or as I've seen a urologist describe thongs "a UTI transfer highway"

Definitely. I don't know why people dont seem to realise that and wear them all the time.

wishingonastar101 · Today 13:47

Maybe crotchless will help with my yeasty vag.... terrible trust in summer.

hmmdunno · Today 13:55

WyattCallow · Today 06:32

Ah I see, so it’s not crotchless as in gaping hole, it has a sort of… Y front-y bit.

Bit of an over reaction.

I'm a 'long term customer' and realise over time things have to evolve and change.

No. It’s tacky and vulgar.

Neither of which attract me to a shop.

Perfectly possible to have a good sex life without crap like this.

I also wonder if M&S are selling underpants with a hole through which to poke a penis.

I would understand if they had replaced their shop, changed the decor and started sell sex toys exclusively.

But the outraged because they also sell a few crotchless things, as well as the usual granny pants and good basics in between, neither granny nor porn star?
If it's tacky, don't buy it?

there are called pants.. men don't need to remove their pants to pee...

or not always, I haven't written a thesis on the subject either 😂

I think you’ll find manufacturers of men’s pants have been making those for decades!

sweetpickle2 · Today 15:35

M&S lingerie department has been selling more than “granny panties” for as long as I’ve been buying underwear, and I’m 40. Some incredibly odd comments here.

This picture looks like a medical diagram of a uterus and fallopian tubes.

I believe that sometimes targeted ads will throw a random ad just to see if it works 🫣

PleaseAccepyMyUserNames · Today 15:58

Yeah, I was unsettled by it too! Only because it's M&S; I think it's pretty obvious why it jars! The knickers aren't particularly shocking, more that M&S would resort to such weird click bait to generate hits. They have some really nice stuff that I would actually click on, so I'm confused who they are trying to appeal to, if they're not just taking the piss.
In summary ... It made me feel the same way I would if Ann Summers advertised sensible, sturdy fleece lined slippers 😂

hamnish · Today 16:21

I suspect someone in the marketing dept thought this would be a great way to grab some Daily Mail traction ('Mumsnet readers in breakfast shock over scanty pants') and thus subtly letting more traditional M&S shoppers know that they could get their crotchless lace thongs via discreet Click and Collect green bags, without having to set foot in actual Ann Summers.
