Holiday - to rebook or let them go?

As a family we have had a “dream holiday” booked for around a year that took 3 years to save for. We are due to go in 3 weeks and it’s for a 3 week holiday. It’s me, my husband and our 2 children in early to late teens.

This past weekend I ended up in hospital with a pretty serious health event, think cardio, and I cannot travel for this holiday, still in hospital and not sure how long I’ll be here for.

Just today my husband said we needed to discus the holiday. I thought he was going to discuss moving it to another time in which I can come but no, he seems to think is acceptable that the 3 of them go and I stay home and recover, alone, and just don’t go at all.

AIBU to think we should just rebook the whole thing until I’m well enough to go or am I selfish to even consider asking them to stay home and rebook?

im off my head on pain meds and can’t even think about this logically right now.

I’d let them go. I’d recover much better if I didn’t have DH fussing over me and two disappointed children to contend with.

@HealthConcerns24 if it was points/miles you may be able to move the flights, think you might even be able to cancel. Some schemes are more flexible.

I think I got stuck on the bit where he basically told you to lie and say someone was with you at home and then get a neighbour to pop in - after your cardiac episode and an operation - wow just wow (can’t think of a word to sum him up but you deserve better)

I get that the children would be disappointed but surely they would be worried about you on your own at home and also not enjoy it as much without you - perhaps he should hook up with the 50 year old DH on another thread who wasn’t happy when his wife bought him the watch he wanted and a trip to Dubai

You’re unnecessarily emotional over basic facts:

• Disney tickets are cheaper in August as high season is May-July. Travel is higher due to UK based demand which drives overall prices up but doesn’t equate to the best time to go.
• Travel insurance doesn’t usually cover the costs to cancel 3 adults and 1 child when only 1 adult cannot travel.
• Claiming travel insurance when your lying husband has done multiple bookings makes it even harder to be successful at rebooking and recouping money spent
• OP is really too ill to be worrying about Disney. Her health is #1 priority and her #2 is to end her marriage because he has clearly shown her his utter contempt for her

Sorry your 2 years in 2 decades a tad vague. It could mean you have travelled there for a total of 700 weeks in 20 years, or lived on and off there for a total of 2 years during the past 20. You could have been a Florida tax resident at one point within the 2 years of living there.

OP, your husband is a conniving arse! Don't lie to the hospital, and I agree you should tell your eldest that you are being pressured to do so; and if you can get that in text from your 'D'H all the better. You have insurance, and airmiles flights so I hope most of that can be rebooked for later in the year. Your health, and indeed life, will be at risk. Still, now you know where you stand in your marriage, and it isn't as an equal!

It is truth. I’ve seen and heard it happen. Many insurance policies don’t cover the family unless it is a minor child that is too ill to travel. And OP may be deemed to have had an undisclosed pre-existing condition.

This is why I’m saying you need to read things properly.

Your husband is a selfish bastard. We are currently in Orlando on a family holiday and there’s no way we would have left any family member out, particularly if they were ill in hospital! Consider your options - you deserve better. Get well soon xx

What makes you think I haven’t also gone to Disney from the UK? I’ve booked those trips too. There you go sssuming I’d never booked a hotel in Florida now you’re assuming that a former expat has never gone to Disney from London. Nice one, did you miss where I said the other Disney parks I’d visited too?

You’re free to have a different opinion on how long the magic of Disney lasts, but most people don’t fly long haul to Disney every month for 20 years. You’re kind of a super fan, not the norm.

Personally I think my 4 years in the past 5 years living in Florida trumps your 2 yrs worth of holidays as a tourist in 20 years and that doesn’t even include Walt Disney, California, Disney Paris or Disney Hong Kong.

I recently booked flights and when we had to cancel our trip the credit card company were able to claw their points back for us and we got a full refund on the flights via the credit card company (not the airline)!!! So the flights is booked via a credit card like AMEX may well refund you as they often have their own insurance protections and is why most people book via credit. So no money may be lost! Worth a shot.

Aside from that OP even if you were well enough to go, August is hell on earth in Florida (used to live there and have many friends still there messaging me about the weather most days as I now live in a better climate). I promise I’m not being rude about you booking your holiday then, just from a health perspective wanted to add some info.

There is severe heat, humidity, daily thunderstorms and huge amounts of rain that leave you soaked through, huge lines as American children are also off school so a lot longer waiting and standing in lines and some of the rides you’d not be able to go on even when feeling better after your op so definitely make a list before you go of the gentler rides.

If you can rebook and use these reasons too for your selfish prick of a husband then see if you can shift it to Spring or Winter as it will be much safer for you from an exertion/cardio point of view too.

One reason we left Florida was the heat and humidity was making me physically unwell for large parts of the year.

We aren’t talking about any park except Orlando though are we? Because none of the others have relevance here as the OP was going to Florida.

Be careful as you might be about to get bombarded by a space coast resident who disagrees about the holiday dates whilst simultaneously confirming that half of August is indeed the American school holidays 🤣

Good advice though, I always hate the first couple of days on my August trip, the heat puts me flat on my ass (literally sometimes) so I wouldn’t recommend if OP is having ongoing health issues.

Good grief, and this from the August is the most magical time of year at Disney. Who said i knew nothing when I said August is the worst time to go.

There is no one American school year calendar. Up north they are off usually at least until the day after Labor Day (1st Monday in September)

Florida is unusual in that schools go back up to a month earlier than the US average.

But yeah you know everything. 🫤 little miss tourist who feels she knows more than two Florida residents that were local.

School vacation varies by state. A lot of Southern states (e.g, Florida and Southern California) start back to school by mid August (Aug 10 to 13) whereas for the Northern States it is often the day after Labour Day (early September).

I think this provided you are well enough to look after yourself at home or you have someone else who could come to care for you.
