Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

Why does he need to go to the room with you?
I think getting ready in the bathroom in the morning is fair. Whichever one of us it up first we make sure not to disturb the other.

Agree with the others. Anyone who forbids me from doing anything is not who I want in my life

Fairy40 · 23/07/2026 01:34

What on earth has that got to do with anything? ...erm absolutely nothing ...

AquaWhichIsFrenchForWater · 23/07/2026 06:19

In the mornings, we do try our best not to not disturb each other, but in terms of freshening up for the evening; your husband is just winding himself up! He doesn’t have to hang around for you, why can’t he go downstairs and get the drinks in? Or go for a walk?
If you only take 10 minutes, he doesn’t know how lucky he is 😂

He shouldn't be telling you what to do but to be honest my husband drives me mad faffing about in the room on holiday and it does feel like we are wasting our holiday time.

Wasting holiday time? Why are your holidays so regimented? I can understand it if you’ve planned an excursion that has a specific start time but otherwise why? It sounds like “Come on DH, if we don’t leave sharpish we won’t be in the pool by 7:30, meaning we only have an hour before we start reading. At this rate I won’t get through my 50 page target by my 10:00 coffee”. Sounds exhausting!

He should be pleased you take pride in your appearance. I NEVER even do the school run without make up and if he isn't noticing the effort you make I'm sure others will

Lol

doitwithlove · 22/07/2026 21:37

Nah, nah, nah …. I would be telling him to “shut the f*ck up” if I was with him! It is your holiday to do what you want to.

And opening the curtains when I needed light or turning the light on.

Who does he think he is!!

Such a weird way to behave with each other.

I would be mighty pissed off if my husband woke up early and turned all the lights on and opened the curtains while I was sleeping because of his routine. He is the early riser in our relationship.

It’s not about one person controlling another or
the other thinking they are the centre of the universe and can do what they like when they like and anyone who tells them otherwise is abusive/controlling.

Just be normal and considerate of each other and you both get what you want.

AnonymityAnonymity · 23/07/2026 06:37

You sound incompatible actually.
How on earth has your relationship lasted this long when you are obsessed with your makeup and appearance and it obviously irritates him to the extent he is an unpleasant and controlling grump?

Iocanepowder · 23/07/2026 06:45

The way you’ve written your op makes it sound to me like you’re going back to the room multiple times a day to all this, in which case that would sound a bit excessive to me? In any case, he doesn’t need to come with you.

I don’t get how more women don’t sweat off their make up on holiday like I would🤣

Cherrytree86 · 23/07/2026 06:46

saraclara · 22/07/2026 23:48

He’d hate me then. I need at least an hour and if I need to wash my hair then usually 1.5 hours.

I'd hate you, too. I'm so glad I'm not a bloke, and married to someone who takes that long to get ready every morning. And on holiday, too! I want to be up and doing something, not waiting for a 1.5 morning toilette to be finished.

@saraclara

so you want to be up and off?

you don’t shower? Wash hair? Clean teeth? Brush hair? Apply hair?

be for real, no one can just roll out of bed and be up and off (and if they do they shouldn’t as they’ll stink and look shit)

@AnonymityAnonymity

wearing make up doesn’t make one obsessed with their appearance. Hth.

No it doesn't necessarily mean that.
But if you are on holiday and you are continually needing to touch up your lip liner or reapply mascara or whatever it smacks of unhealthy obsession and a lack of self esteem.
I'm not excusing her H's behaviour btw

or maybe she just likes to look good, and is happy to spend a few minutes here and there topping up?

Feeling you only look good wearing make is surely a lack of self esteem?
Not being able to enjoy yourself on holiday unless your make up mask is in place doesn't sound very healthy to me.

Obviously you and OP think differently.

My only point that if this is how OP feels about herself then fair enough but perhaps she would be better off in a relationship with someone who is capable of accepting her for who she is rather than this guy who obviously isn't

LiteraryBambi · 23/07/2026 07:31

Wait, if you've both been out all day (hot country? beach?) then surely you'll both have a shower and freshen up for donner anyway.

Otherwise.....gross.

Megifer · 23/07/2026 07:32

And we cannot have women wanting to perhaps address their inconsequential to others lack of self esteem by wearing make up can we? We must stomp them down further by pointing out their weakness.

I almost never wear make up so he’d probably wonder what was going on.

Seems like an extra faff to be bothering about on holiday.

can you not relax without it?

Why on earth should she?

Just because you dont like it, why does the OP have to be the same as you?

If your husband told you to stop doing something you enjoyed doing would you just submissively obey him without question?

He's being an arse- on holiday you are meant to be able to relax and have fun, not feel like you're in the bloody army. I'd be telling him where to go. My goodness, I have never heard of such nonsense - a man being furious his wife spends 10 mins in the bathroom. Good grief.

NoisyViewer · 23/07/2026 07:41

i suppose it depends on how many times you go back to your room. Personally on a pool holiday I don’t wear makeup in the day. So I’m literally up and ready in 10 minutes from start to finish. Only on an evening do i put makeup on. If you’re going back to the room several times a day then I think you’re being excessive and maybe this behaviour has grated on him over the years. Especially if the 10 minutes is more closer to 15/20. But it doesn’t take 10 minutes to brush her and touch up makeup. However, he doesn’t need to wait for you. He could go back to the beds or sit at a bar whilst he waits for you. There is no need to badger you and make life more difficult.

What does your preferences have to do with anything? OP obviously likes wearing makeup, and she should be allowed to make herself look nice for ten minutes without her husband moaning at her.

i do only look ‘good’ with makeup on. It’s how I feel my best, I like to look good and feel good on holiday 🤷‍♀️

This! Instead of moaning about waiting for Op he too should be freshening up … shower, teeth clean, etc. filthy article

I never said she had to be the same as me.

Londonrach1 · 23/07/2026 08:02

I don't wear makeup so it's never been an issue. How many times are you touching up?

Sereine · 23/07/2026 08:02

Is all this faffing really necessary? If you have good quality deodorant it shouldn't need to be reapplied, ditto make up. If you carry a comb with you you can sort out your hair quickly roughly wherever you are; if you absolutely have to have a mirror, nip into the nearest Ladies rather than traipsing back to your room.
