AIBU All hell broke loose over UCAT

YourChirpyBee · 20/07/2026 23:16

DS is applying for Medicine and needs to book his UCAT. He wanted to book a particular date, but DH, who believes in astrology, was pressuring him to book the day before instead (he refused to pay for the selected date) because he thinks it's a better date.

I agree this shouldn't be forced on DS. However, DS completely lost his temper. He said astrology was "bullshit", that this was his future and none of DH's business, that we had nothing to do with his future, that everything he'd achieved was thanks to him and not us and that we havent helped DS17 at all.

AIBU to be really upset by how he spoke? I completely understand disagreeing with astrology but DS17 showed zero gratitude or respect for everything we've done to support him.

This is a rough one — both things can be true at once, which is often how these threads go.
On the astrology/booking bit: You're right that this shouldn't have been forced on him. The UCAT date matters for practical reasons (revision schedule, other commitments, how he feels on the day) — not astrological ones. DH refusing to pay for the date DS actually wanted, over a star-sign preference, is a pretty unreasonable ask to put on a 17-year-old sitting a high-stakes exam for something he's worked hard for. So no, YANBU to think DS shouldn't have had that pressure put on him.
On DS's reaction: Also understandable that it stung, and I don't think that's YABU either, but for a slightly different reason than "he was disrespectful." A few things stand out:

  • He's 17, under exam pressure, and was just told his choice about his own future doesn't matter as much as a horoscope. That's the kind of thing that makes anyone's temper fray, teenagers especially.
  • The "bullshit" comment was about astrology, not about you — that's fair game to say bluntly, even if the delivery was blunt.
  • The bit that would actually stings is the "you've done nothing for me" line. That's not really about astrology anymore, that's him lashing out broadly in the heat of the moment, and it's the part worth addressing separately from the DH disagreement — because it's not true and it's not fair to you, even if he's stressed.
I'd probably separate the two conversations: back him up (privately, with DH) on the actual booking decision being his to make, but also have a quieter word with DS once things have cooled that says something like: "I get why you were angry at Dad, and you're allowed to disagree with him firmly — but the bit about us not helping you wasn't okay, and I'd like an apology for that specifically." So: NAH on the original disagreement, but DS's blanket dismissal of you both is fair to be hurt by and worth raising with him directly, separate from whether he was right about the exam date itself.

Stop using Chat GPT, we can all read the balanced opinions that actually involved the posters thinking for themselves!

Where is OP ? Perhaps her DH has said it doesn't align with astrology for her to return today .

Megifer · 21/07/2026 08:31

And yes op i think you should pay for the test. Any horoscope you read today can be interpreted as that being the right thing to do so show DH literally any you can find if he kicks off.

PoliteGreyDreamer · 21/07/2026 08:33

This is the second thread about a teenager pulling up their parents on their astronomy bollocks in 2 days.

Mercury really is in retrograde.

SummerDive · 21/07/2026 08:34

heizfiftyseven · 21/07/2026 08:04

He doesn't have to agree. As I said before, he can pay for the test himself and go when he wants.

That’s assuming he has access to said funds.
And he can cope with HUGE fall out if he is over riding his father decision.

He still has to live with his parents fur another year.
And frim that one post it doesn’t sound like neither the father nor the mother would take such a move happily. The father because he is controlling. The mother because she won’t stand up to her dh even on really stupid things (I’d have paid for that test myself rather than start a thread on how ungrateful my child is fgs)

Floatlikeafeather2 · 21/07/2026 08:35

Those are the words of someone pushed beyond breaking point.
The person who gave the final shove is your husband.
It's your husband's unreasonable behaviour you should have written a post about, not your son's perfectly understandable reaction (as a 17 year old under huge, and probably frightening, pressure) to it.

PfizerFan · 21/07/2026 08:35

This is why I asked upthread what had happened previously with regard to DH's belief in Astrology and had it caused a problem before.

So far we have no answer/explanation.

Then we agree on that. Just not on your statement about the son paying for the test himself. But maybe I misunderstood what you meant.

formigas · 21/07/2026 08:42

Just on the offchance that this isn't a windup...

Not paying for the exam in an attempt to force him to take it on a more "auspicious" date is not putting DS best interests first.

Saying you've never helped him is probably a combination of being a teenager, feeling under pressure and disbelief and frustration at what a total fuckwit his father is. But a lot of what DS has achieved is down to him (partly, not wholly) and if he's excelling in science he is doing so in spite of growing up with at least one parent who wouldn't know scientific method from a spoon.

Yes, it is retrograde in it's own sign of Gemini at 15 degrees. It will go direct in 2 days.

if you can provide any evidence that, in the 300,000 years or so humans have been around, the position of stars and planets have had any meaningful effect on the character or behaviour of people in a predictable way, you should have no problem demonstrating it, right?

I don't know why some people need to have a thing. And often play down an interest in astrology, tarot, etc in a giggly 'I know it's all nonsense, it's just a silly bit of fun' way, but they still actually believe it enough (with absolutely zero common sense or evidence to back it up) to make life decisions off the back of it. Like OP's husband.

ChiefCookandBottlewasher7 · 21/07/2026 08:49

Two things. First, astrology is bs and you should not interfere with his UCAT booking dates, absolutely should not.
However, the second part is that he is ungrateful. This needs to be nipped in the bud now. Explain to him what you were doing for him and repeat weekly. They need to know. Tell him he is only able to study for UCAT because he has a roof over his head, stable home and does not have to be a young carer. Through work I know a few of young carers, who would love to study, not even medicine, but just to be able to study school subjects uninterrupted, but they can't. Explain to him the importance of what you give him - a stable home environment, albeit with an embarrassing dad.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/07/2026 08:50

Your DH has behaved appallingly. Your DS is under huge pressure and your DH has added to the stress.
Let’s break it down

  1. Your DH has made the UCAT about himself and his beliefs instead of your DS
  2. Your DS is having his future held to ransom. Can he afford to pay himself if you don’t pay for the exam
  3. He is now carrying the extra burden of defying his parents if he sticks with the date he wants or giving in and feeling bullied
  4. If he sticks to his original date and doesn’t do well then will your DH feel vindicated and comment on how he was right

I sincerely doubt this is a one off and your DS’s frustration hit boiling point.

A doctor doesn't have to espouse superstitions that they do not believe in and don't have to change their own life actions as a result of them.

So you think a doctor should force a Jehovah's Witnesses to have a blood transfusion ?

I talked abour their own life actions. By which I meant that they don't have to stop accepting blood transfusions themselves. Of course they should respect the life choices and actions of their patients unless they risk harming others.

Yup and the OP's husband is free to take the UCAT any day that he wants to do so - the OP's son isn't stopping him (which would the actual analogy to the person refusing blood donations, not the PP's made-up analogy).

Hadalifeonce · 21/07/2026 08:52

I assume the poll is not based on your controlling DH, but about whether your DD should understand that supportive parents don't contribute 'nothing'?

closureatlast · 21/07/2026 08:53

Without Googling I just know you're correct 😂

I think its nonsense but have no beef at all with anyone who believes in it. Its just when that belief affects others as in this alleged case it becomes harmful IMO.

heizfiftyseven · 21/07/2026 08:24

@ChalkOutlines How did you come to that conclusion?

You said don't have to change their own life actions as a result of them. Which I take to mean ignoring a patients Right to Self Determination by taking a course of action that does not support that Right.

Edited

You took it wrong.
