To be annoyed at the assumption that I am a Mrs?

So I completed a update form at the dentist for myself and my daughter; the ones they routinely hand out. It didn't ask for my title, but I ticked the "married" box.
Next thing I know, my name pings up on the screen as Mrs .
Just no!!
At the end of my appointment I went to ask for it to be corrected, but AIBU to be annoyed at the assumption?
A bit like the thread today referring to the new prime minister's wife as Mrs Burnham. She is Ms van Heel.

@Denim4ever Absolutely. I have an issue with misogyny.

@anonhop Just in the same way as I have chosen to be a married Ms. To call me something else is disrespectful, no?

You sound like a bit of a drama queen tbh. How are people supposed to know you wish to be called Ms. Why not just tell them instead of calling them disrespectful.
Talk about first world problems!!

@Beekman One universal title would make sense. You know - like there is for men.

Because that's your choice?
What about the women who choose to be Mrs or want to remain Miss?
Do they not matter?

Justbreathagain · 20/07/2026 22:41

It's not depressing through is it? It may have meant that In the past but literally no one thinks like this anymore. It's ancient. Families like to have the same surname so that their children also have the same surname. Some men take their wives surname, some stay miss, some ms , some Mrs. All are fine and really none of your business. You really shouldn't assume what someone else has chosen to do is depressing. It's more depressing that you take everything so personally. No one cares.

Beekman · 20/07/2026 22:41

At least we haven’t had the usual defensive argument of “your maiden name is your dad’s name anyway”. What no one ever points out is that your husband’s surname is also his dad’s.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 20/07/2026 22:41

@Cosyblankets Have you stopped to consider why there is one universal title for men but the title of a woman is associated with her marital status?

OP posts:
SpaceCat87 · 20/07/2026 22:42

More boring feminist hysteria over a complete non issue.

Fiftyandnotsonifty · 20/07/2026 22:42

BirdLandedonmyHead · 20/07/2026 22:20

The whole thing would be a lot simpler if there was jist one title for adult women.

Boys and men are now both called Mr.

Women have a title that refers to our syatus to men.

Of if we did away with them altogether? I think it’s a bit archaic now.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 20/07/2026 22:43

@SpaceCat87 Well as a non-feminist you would say that.

But the point is women can choose.

LostNFoundSV · 20/07/2026 22:44

I see no reason for asking your marital status - that seems rather old fashioned. Just requesting your preferred title seems to be the norm IME. I’m married and use my maiden name prefixed by Ms. I’ve never had any issues with that.

walrushurricane · 20/07/2026 22:44

It is really ridiculous that women are still defined by whether or not they are married. I always use ms too and didn't change my surname. That should be the default for all women imo.

Newyearawaits · 20/07/2026 22:46

Easy to understand how so many people get it wrong without meaning to, based on assumptions.
I am not married and I am a parent so I am frequently referred to as Mrs.
I prefer Miss.
My sister isn't married and wants to be referred to as Ms.
Soooo easy to unintentionally get it 'wrong'.
Lighten up OP, just correct as required.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 20/07/2026 22:46

@Cosyblankets Not really what I was asking you to consider.

balozcro · 20/07/2026 22:46

Just off the point but how do you pronounce Ms ?

walrushurricane · 20/07/2026 22:48

Cosyblankets · 20/07/2026 22:44

But the point is women can choose.

No they can't. People makes assumptions all the time and select a title for you. Men don't have that problem.

TheyGrewUp · 20/07/2026 22:48

To be honest, I am happy to be Mrs his first name, his last name. Also happy to be Mrs my first name, his last name.

However, if I wanted to be Ms, I'd expect to be given that choice.

If men can be: Dr, Lord, Major, Captain, Reverend, Sir, etc., and women can be Dr, Lady, Dame, Reverend, Captain, etc, I really don't understand why people can't also cope with Mrs, Miss, Ms, or Mx for that matter, in addition.

It really isn't hard to have the options and to use them.

samantha9 · 20/07/2026 22:48

I suggest everyone reads the engagement ring thread

To be annoyed at the assumption that I am a Mrs?

We have the choice. Why we have the choice is feminism.

If you want a really worrying modern patriarchal issue then you need look no further than the fact that in recent decades many women have been ok with giving their children the surname of the father of their children even when they are not married.

TheAmberKoala · 20/07/2026 22:48

The sooner we get rid of titles, the better.
Why cant we just use peoples names?

Why do we need options though? What is the point of titles?

Batties · 20/07/2026 22:07

I agree. I did not take DH’s name and I am definitely not ‘Mrs’

Absolutely, same for me.

I wonder if all those saying "does it matter?" are Mrs and how they would feel being called Ms?

Cheeseandolivesplease · 20/07/2026 22:50

@Denim4ever Absolutely.

@PurBalcompletely agree. I hate being “Ms”. I was proud to be “Miss” and I’m proud to be “Mrs”.

Do you mind explaining exactly what accomplishment it is you're "proud of"?

Oh yes, that's "really worrying."
