To ask which city you'd move to in England if you didn't live there already

I am thinking about it. Would prefer not London tbh although appreciate that's where the jobs are (and in some ways it's probably the easiest fit for outsiders).

Where is friendly, has stuff to do, jobs and the like. I think my answer is going to end up being Newcastle (but I like York).

Falmouth isn't a city!

Truro is the only city in Cornwall.

Live in London.

I really love Manchester so if I had no commitments where I am that’s where I think would tickle my fancy

I've lived in Sheffield and Norwich and enjoyed both for very different reasons. I still live in Norfolk but in a village. I'd much prefer to live somewhere with hills and ideally, very rurally. I like the Peak District, DH likes Northumberland and we both like Cumbria.

DD lives in York and it's lovely but bloody expensive, v few job opportunities and it's overrun with tourists all the time.

Leeds, Manchester or Sheffield for me

We often go to Chester for food/drinks. We have a couple of favourite bars for people watching. It's seems like a beautiful city.

Somewhere on the coast, with a neutral accent. Maybe Devon (I know it’s not a city) or something.

Of course so am assuming I am rich here because if not I’ll have to stay in Salford

I think for me, born and bred Norwich girl, with Welsh grandparents, it’s about what you’re used to. Until my late teens I hadn’t been to many other cities, other than day trips to London, visiting family in Cardiff. Stopovers in Birmingham. It was only when I was older that I visited other cities and found them lacking compared to Norwich. I liked Bath, York (lots of similarities with Norwich) and Lincoln was nice. Cambridge, visited and stayed a lot, but when I came home, none compared to my home city. My kids, all grown up, live in Norwich, two graduated from the UEA. They are far more well travelled than me, but none want to live elsewhere. I sometimes stay with them, they stay with me on the North Norfolk coast. Best of both worlds.

When I retire I'm moving to Manchester or Cambridge.

A lot of posters don't know the difference between a town and a city, or England v Wales or Scotland it would seem.

Bristol is big enough to absorb newcomers, good social life and jobs in some sectors at least are well paid, we live just outside which has the best of both worlds and yachts

Can't say I'd leave London, not much to do anywhere else.

Interested to know why you say Cambridge. I find it such a funny place. I always feel like I'm an uninvited guest at a party and looking over the fence into someone's private bit of river or land.

At a push, I might be able to manage somewhere like Ripon or Wells... because they are amongst the smallest cities in England. However, I will stay tucked safely away in the countryside!
