To ask which city you'd move to in England if you didn't live there already

I am thinking about it. Would prefer not London tbh although appreciate that's where the jobs are (and in some ways it's probably the easiest fit for outsiders).

Where is friendly, has stuff to do, jobs and the like. I think my answer is going to end up being Newcastle (but I like York).

Agreed, since they closed the mines and the mills we all just sit twiddling our thumbs all day. Thankfully in London they have things like 'shops' 'cafes' 'parks' and 'museums'.

Cambridge, York, Sheffield or maybe Lincoln but I'd have to live at the top side of Steep Hill.

But Glasgow over all of those if we are allowed outside England.

Chesterfield

I love that unlike some cities named here, it’s not going to attract loads of tourists / hen and stag parties because it’s just a decent, practical town. It also has an excellent M & S and a good range of shops, And of course it’s the gateway to the Peak District. For anyone not wanting to be tied to their car, it has fantastic bus and train links and is near Sheffield, Matlock and of course the Peak District

I don’t live there, just stayed a few times so maybe it has a hidden dark side but then, don’t many towns and cities? ( OP’s update said we could include towns)

Bristol

Used to live near there. Personally I think it's a hole, and really down at heel these days.
Sheffield is also a gateway to the Peak District and has fantastic bus and train links. It's that bit bigger and more interesting/lively. If I had to live in that area again, I'd go for Sheffield every time.

And lovely restaurants with a wide variety of cuisines. So much to do..so much going on..so much excitement.

The only reason traffic is awful is because people won't cycle or use the park and rides. It needs an expensive congestion charge. It's small and accessible and nobody needs to use their flippin car to get into the centre.

I think it's lovely - I lived there for a year and ds was at university there. But you do need to avoid it on a Saturday evening if you don't want to see a load of undignified middle aged women with their tits hanging out. I am not being ageist or sexist, that's what I saw there. But I suspect that's true of most UK cities -for some reason getting drunk and showing as much cleavage as possible is considered to be fun.

Cardiff is lovely. In fact in some ways I like it more than Edinburgh but it will never have the cityscape.

I like the cityscape of Stirling too but haven't been there for a long time. I know a lot of places have gone downhill. But the biggest overrated place for me is St Andrews. What is exciting about a ruined cathedral and a golf course? I'd rather go to Dunkeld for ruins .

Always liked the look of Manchester. Vibrant and easy to navigate with extremely easy links to the rest of the North.

Out of interest-Have you actually been? I like Liverpool and Leeds but in all fairness don’t like Manchester and have been lots with work - I find it really claustrophobic and very few areas unless going a long way out I would actually want to live - even the areas that are considered to be nice I didn’t find particularly nice relative to other places. I guess it’s horses for courses, maybe if I was 28 again rather than early 60s I would love it - whereas I do quite like Winchester which I’ve also been to a few times.

My home town is being destroyed by London overspill moving here pushing out the locals. It's lost its soul.... But, it's my home. I don't need to leave, will fly the flag until it's meaningless.

Yep, I get you - it does change places and the vibe —- a biggie in Manchester is if you look for areas to live- I know loads of mumsnetters won’t agree with me , but apart from altrincham which I didn’t mind and saddkewirthxareawhich I like but is a fair way out and a bit of a depressing drive into Manchester I honestly didn’t really like anywhere that much - even raved about areas like Didsbury or chorlton - maybe I’ve just got used to a lot more green space around! we did consider it at one point as had a fair bit of business there at that time.
