To ask which city you'd move to in England if you didn't live there already

I am thinking about it. Would prefer not London tbh although appreciate that's where the jobs are (and in some ways it's probably the easiest fit for outsiders).

Where is friendly, has stuff to do, jobs and the like. I think my answer is going to end up being Newcastle (but I like York).

London. I think it is probably the best city in the world. Although, quite a few come fairly close.

Edinburgh and Liverpool

Is there any UK town or city centre that doesn’t stink of pot? So revolting and depressing.

personally id prefer london, mi6/mi5, all the museums, the river etc

I am from Hartlepool and have lived in Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Brighton, Hove, Cambridge and various places in London. I would prefer London any day but Brighton comes a close second.

But the city centre absolutely stinks of pot and there seems to be no restriction on public drug taking of any kind and no police intervention. Last time I was there I saw an addict injecting herself in a doorway in a main shopping street in broad daylight. I find it depressing and frightening.

There seems to be no police or investment in the city centre council controlled resources. Strange for such a comparatively wealthy city.

Newcastle, York or Durham. Really beautiful cities with a great vibe and close to beautiful countryside (and the coast in the case of Newcastle).

yes there headquarters is in London, i love espionage and its partly why i prefer london, that and the Egyptians at the British museum

Interestingly, Manchester have had to build two new primary schools in the city recently because the population of young families in the City centre is growing.

I don’t live in any of these places but if I could work anywhere and it didnt take too long to get to family I’d choose from:

Truro
York
Cambridge

Belfast

This is where I currently am and I do have to admit it’s almost perfect. It’s just missing the sea.

Amazed at all the love for York. I mean it's lovely to visit, but I can't imagine the people suggesting have lived there. Housing is incredibly expensive, there's very little in the way of job opportunities so you'll end up commuting to Leeds. When races are on the city centre is awful with drunk idiots, and it's also like that from about 3pm most weekends because of hen parties. Oh, and it floods a lot.

There is an awful lot of overhead plane noise.

I love to visit London. Really I do. Now we are retired we try to have a week there every year. But I really wouldn't want to live there.

I mean, I couldn't afford to anyway. Last time we were there we did a walk around Hampstead Heath and Highgate and, looking in estate agent windows, a house like the one we live in here in Cheshire would be way, way, way beyond our pocket.

However, even if money was no object I don't think I would want to live there permanently. I like living where I do. Mind you, if money was no object I could happily have a flat there so I could visit and stay more often.

Yes I agree and very tourist tacky near the Cathedral.

As a city, I love Bristol and when I win the lottery would love a house there!! But my dream is to live by the sea.

Not sure it offers a huge amount of jobs , but 100% Durham

Harrogate would have been on my list but the older I get the hill in town gets harder to climb.
